CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx) meets Mrs. Teasdale (Margaret Dumont) for the first time and runs circles around her.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this 1933 Marx Brothers film, the mythical country of Freedonia is broke and on the verge of revolution. Mrs. Teasdale (Margaret Dumont), Freedonia's principal benefactress, will lend the country 20 million dollars if the president withdraws and places the government in the hands of the "fearless, progressive" Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx). At his inauguration, Firefly shows up late, insults everyone in sight, and sings a song about how he intends to abuse his power. Naturally, the crowd cheers wildly. Meanwhile, Ambassador Trentino (Louis Calhern) of neighboring Sylvania schemes to oust Firefly and take over Freedonia himself. To gather enough evidence to discredit Firefly, he sends his most trusted spies, Chicolini (Chico Marx) and Pinky (Harpo Marx). Five minutes after they show up in Freedonia, both spies become important members of Firefly's cabinet, though Chicolini keeps his day job as a peanut vendor. Firefly eventually declares war on Sylvania, an absurd farrago with Firefly changing uniforms from scene to scene, Chicolini going to the other side because the food is better, and Pinky parading around the battlefield with a sandwich board reading "Join the army and see the navy."

Now this is comedy! Fredonia New York, about 30 miles south of Buffalo, complained that this movie gave their town a bad name to which Groucho replied:"Change the name of your town, it's hurting our picture."

@ John Bertrand... when Groucho told this story he said that when he wrote back to the Mayor of Fredonia who had complained he wrote... "well the name of your town hasn't helped our movie either"... PS -- my family is from Buffalo and I have cousins living in Fredonia which happens to be a nice little rural town and if you blink while driving on route US 20 you'll miss it

Margaret Dumont was a brilliant straight foil for the brothers. Of course she knew the scenes were totally surreal - and she played them perfectly. Groucho said otherwise - but Groucho was not always honest, and was not always comfortable with other actors being that skilled.

Margaret Dumont was awesome in all of the Marx Brothers Movies...She was the perfect 'foil' , and was a great addition to these films. Although it is of a different time and genre, these films reminded me of the work that Carol Cleveland and Connie Booth did with 'Monty Python', circa late 60s to early 70s. The skits with the Pythons were very funny, but Cleveland and Booth made many of them even funnier, with their timing, delivery, and their habit of being in the 'wrong' place at the wrong time. These 3 ladies are Gems.
@Lockemeister

Don't believe everything you hear. She might have not understood some of the jokes,how they fit, but how does anyone know if she didn't understand ANY of the jokes. She was the perfect straight actress and she had perfect comic timing. If she appeared hurt by the jokes, it wouldn't be a funny scene. It's called "acting".. Groucho stated, to get cheap laughs, that she probably bought her own bouquet of flowers at the Hollywood Bowl TV show. Pretty mean for a woman who helped make the movies funny

So, just like the younger generations have ditched the primitive music originating in that era and embraced the incredible level of music that started in the 60s and 70s, the youngest generations recognize that Groucho and all the old talents were very primitive and simply the building blocks that later comedians refined and advanced far beyond the wildest dreams of people like Groucho. Translation-old people's comedy only funny to the old people and social restrictions of their time, new people's comedy so advanced and challenging to social structure that old people can't process or appreciate the genius of it, and retreat into their diapers to whine about the good ole' days with half-power talents.

I want Rufus T. Firefly as Prime Ministry in my country now! (sure he's way better and more credible than our politicians...cause our politicians are clowns 😂)

Groucho Marx was to comedy what Einstein was to science and Mozart was to music.
@premanadi

Sort of...though Groucho is more like a great performer, since he didn't write his lines (this movie was written by Burt Kalmar and Harry Ruby). He's like a great violinist playing a piece by Mozart.

No. He was more like the Wright brothers, one of the first in their fields, but many many came after that who took that primitive work to the next levels. Marx was no Mozart, most of his jokes were very old jokes or were written for him. He was just the guy that delivered them. And Einstein developed and wrote most of his stuff also. So.....not even a close comparison.

The CIA should use Groucho's movies translated into arabic as torture for terrorists. They would give up all the secrets.

I never heard that Urban myth about Dumont. Anyone who would believe that clearly just not understand comedy.

Groucho was a tremendous wit, but IMO it simply doesn't come across in movies.

I don't understand why everyone comments a snippet of the scene. We already watched it.

I don't understand why everyone comments a snippet of the scene. _Because EVERYONE does that on RU-vid._ Oh, mystery solved. I don't understand why they drank the poison Kool-Aid. _Because EVERYONE drank the cyanide in Jonestown._ Rock accordion bump bump bump And another one rides the bus ... Ah, so that explains _everything._ After divulging the fundamental driving force behind life, the universe, and everything in his first appearance on _The Tomorrow Show_ with Tom Snyder, backed by a rock accordion and a set of honkers right out of this film, how did Weird Al somehow manage to have a second act? _Because EVERYONE who ever appeared on "The Tomorrow Show" went on to eternal fame and fortune._ Rock accordion bump bump bump And another one quaffs the juice ...
