CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Pinky (Harpo Marx) pretends to be Firefly's (Groucho Marx) reflection, matching his every move - until Chicolini (Chico Marx) ruins the effect.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this 1933 Marx Brothers film, the mythical country of Freedonia is broke and on the verge of revolution. Mrs. Teasdale (Margaret Dumont), Freedonia's principal benefactress, will lend the country 20 million dollars if the president withdraws and places the government in the hands of the "fearless, progressive" Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx). At his inauguration, Firefly shows up late, insults everyone in sight, and sings a song about how he intends to abuse his power. Naturally, the crowd cheers wildly. Meanwhile, Ambassador Trentino (Louis Calhern) of neighboring Sylvania schemes to oust Firefly and take over Freedonia himself. To gather enough evidence to discredit Firefly, he sends his most trusted spies, Chicolini (Chico Marx) and Pinky (Harpo Marx). Five minutes after they show up in Freedonia, both spies become important members of Firefly's cabinet, though Chicolini keeps his day job as a peanut vendor. Firefly eventually declares war on Sylvania, an absurd farrago with Firefly changing uniforms from scene to scene, Chicolini going to the other side because the food is better, and Pinky parading around the battlefield with a sandwich board reading "Join the army and see the navy."

I'm convinced that every instance where Harpo's timing/mirroring is off, it is done with complete intention. It's for OUR purpose. They were so good and I'm sure this was so well rehearsed that if they wanted it to be more precise, then that's exactly what would have made it on film. The imperfections make it funnier. They knew this and did it that way. Pure genius.

@cteixeirax
@cteixeirax 3 года назад
Groucho knows that it isn't his reflection very quickly, if not from the very beginning. The Groucho character very often humours the Harpo/Chico characters, playing a sort of devil's advocate to egg them on, since he enjoys the chaos they produce. Sometimes this is done conspiratorially, in order to scam some third party. The Groucho character has a sense of humour. He is less annoyed that Harpo is trying to trick him, and more respectful of the sheer audacity of the attempt, and curious to test how far Harpo is willing to push it, to test how ludicrous the scenario might become. Around 0:55 , he is contemplating just what it might take in order to outsmart Harpo and get him to admit failure - but Harpo matches his ingenuity. At 1:35, Groucho finally seems to catch Harpo out, but Harpo still won't give in. At 1:55 Groucho steps through the mirror, making it completely clear that he is not being fooled at all. But since he doesn't call Harpo out, Harpo is forced to continue the pretense. By now it is the Groucho character who is making the Harpo character look ridiculous (or otherwise, if Harpo at this point still genuinely believes he is fooling Groucho, he is shown up as being gullible). At 2:20 , Groucho tries to catch Harpo out with the hat (which he noticed and smiled at as they circled around each other at 2:00). Harpo magically produces an identical hat, and starts to point and laugh. Now Groucho starts mimicking Harpo, and Harpo realises that the tables have turned. They take their hats off/bow to one another as a sign of mutual respect. Neither of them wants to be the first to give in and end the charade, they are committed to escalating the absurdity, as a point of honour. Chico comes in to finally break the tension, by giving Groucho an excuse to stop the routine. The comedy might be physical but it isn't slapstick, or Groucho just being stupid. It lies in the dramatic irony and is grounded in the characters.
@cteixeirax
@cteixeirax 3 года назад
After doffing their caps, Groucho even helps Harpo by picking the hat up. I think on some level Groucho really wanted Harpo to succeed, and maybe he is a little sad that Harpo didn't do an even better job of tricking him. It's a little sign of encouragement. And I think by picking the hat up Groucho is expressing his gratitude, he is grateful to the Harpo character (as we are) for bringing amusement into his life, grateful for his inventiveness, his intelligence, and to have met somebody as committed to a bit as he is himself. The mirror is almost symbolic, they are mirror images in more than one way in this scene (especially as, at first, Harpo is mirroring Groucho, while towards the end we have the "mirror image" of Groucho mirroring Harpo).
@Losrandir
@Losrandir Год назад
Groucho sort of has the straight man role in many of these, but being Groucho, his so-called straight man is anything but, sort of accepting to play the part but still just iencouraging, ncreasing, and adding to the chaos instead of being a target or victim or such! Oh, he likes, enjoys and appreciates it alright!

Duck Soup was The Marx Brothers most overlooked and most underrated film, when The Marx Brothers were alive. Groucho Marx always felt that the two films that they made for Irving Thalberg (A Night At The Opera and A Day At The Races) at MGM, were the best two films that The Marx Brothers ever made. Duck Soup contains one of The Marx Brothers most iconic moments. This scene is a real piece of cinematic history.

Last time I saw Duck Soup in a theater among an audience, was at a Classic Cinema in London in the late 1960's. Finally realized the expression 'to have the audience rolling in the aisles' was actually based on reality. Many in the audience lost all self control and fell out of their seats holding their sides to keep from 'splitting their guts' with hysterical, unstoppable laughter. Masters of the art and science of comedy.! What passes for comedy today seems merely ill-disguised, mean-spirited anger and iconoclastic rage with almost nothing to do with clever, enjoyable comedy and laughter.

It's actually based on an old vaudeville routine, which had already been done previously in a couple of silent films.

Don't you hate it when you accidentally break a mirror and then somebody just like you copies your every move spot on to the point you can't tell if it's a mirror or not.

Harpo's face after he fools everyone by putting the white hat on is hilarious. This one scene Makes everything Adam Sandler has done look like crap.

I love how Blue Man Group silently picked this up as a gag. I just wish more people recognized it.

So we've got three Marx brothers in the same scene all doing Groucho. Oddly enough Zeppo also played Groucho once when his brother was too sick (flu I think) to film his scene that day. That according to an interview he did with Dick Cavett. Sorry, don't recall which movie. Can anybody help us out?

Now this I got to watch with the kids and it was a lot of fun. From Vaudville to film, just great.

The best part is when the "mirror" starts anticipating the moves and it's Groucho who has to copy what the mirror is doing :D

This is exactly the same thing your stalker does to you every time you pass that fake mirror.
