Hey folks quick update! The Dead Or Alive footage which wasn't deinterlaced has now been fixed with updated software on Duckstation's part! The game looks epic and I will show this in a future video!
You can really beef up Resident Evil 3 to look way better, we have the ability to import AI upscaled textures with this emulator, I think most people are not aware of this. Here's an example using Parasite Eve II ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XVsDzphG6T4.html
@@TheAffroShowGameplay Can you make a video just comparing the 21:9 vs the native 16:9 resolution, so we can see in each game the difference between field pf view, I really like to see that.
Is that ultra wide aspect ratio? Sadly I don't own an ultra wide monitor so the results I don't think would be accurate, especially since I would still export the video at 4K resolution but, I'll keep it in mind if I feel I can do it :)
@@TheAffroShowGameplay yes, the duck station has ultrawide screen support. I like to see how games look with and without a comparison side by side, thanks.
DuckStation is insane. The fact its so easy to set up and use, and has insane amounts of graphical enhancements, performance improvements, and overall being highly accurate to the original hardware (moreso than ePSXe), has since made it my go-to PS1 emulator. The team did an amazing job. Now if only PCSX2 was like this.. (UPDATE: Looks like my comment about PCSX2 certainly aged well.)
There's still some bugs, (Some interlaced games don't deinterlace & I couldn't use my actual PS1 disks) otherwise completely agree, this emulator is wonderful and blew me away! One day, I hope that can be the case...
I hope if they make a duckstation 2 they can find a fix for interlacing on the ps2.. so we don't have to try and find Cheat codes for our games as games look way sharper in progressive mode than interlaced but maybe that's just a PS2 problem they will never be able to easily fix
I'm more of an orignal hardware guy too, but when I see the results these emulators give I can't help but use the emulator. It's like play a HD remaster of my game collection.
Have used many emulators over many years, Duck-station is legit. Not so good at the 2d stuff but for purely 3d stuff it's amazeaballs. Einhander looks incredible on it!
For 2d you do not really need that x999 resolution multiplier, no difference in x1 and others. And yeah filters can be used for those, but you need set at least x3 for them to work properly. I personally saw something like this in zsnes emulator, and not very fond of them, mostly because they are really slow. But I tried something similar at Duckstation, and... You know, I did not have a feeling that something wrong. I should say, I liked them. Also just sharp nearest neighbor have its charm too. But I really do not know which is better for me, NN or xBR. They both look nice, just different. But filters are really slow, x5 already have problems for me. But I really can't see much difference x3 to x5 with filters enabled (and with NN x1 looks the same too), so x3 is fine with xBR, and x1 with NN to keep my PC even quieter. BTW I use integer scaling for even sharper expirience.
All understood & this is exactly why I make these videos so people can see where & when differences occur with upscaling graphics:) If you don't try it, you never know! Also I like integer scalling on 240p/288p content only, with 480i/576i it is too small & the default upscaler for me has no obvious blur & keeps the size of the picture consistent so that's my personal pick :)
@@TheAffroShowGameplay Having used Swan station with RT with the bespoke shaders RT offers in conjunction with the filtering / downsampling options on the emulator i have seen how good it is at upscaling certain 2d games. For example you can upscale Adventures of Lomax to 14x with AA 4.0 x 8 res. It looks awesome! You just need to balance AA / filters and resolution so it's not too sharp and not too soft.
Yeah, unfortunately not everything upscalers equally, especially 2D games or anything that's an FMV or a pre-rendered background, that's why I love the Resident Evil Seamless HD Project, higher res backgrounds in the actual game, very cool although still not perfect :)
Just found your channel, very neat! Also i like using PGXP on near native res on an old screen as the PGXP setting makes it much more stable and looks INCREDIBLY sharp in the orignal 240p image.
Unfortunately when I use emulation I use it to demonstrate what could or can be enhanced, that's just how I use emulation :) Of course this is one way of using it, if you'd rather have more accurate results to real hardware, go for it :) This is just one way of using it & I like that so I get a different playing experience:)
you could have tried the filtering options for 2d games. like Bilinear and xBR. I personally find that Bilinear Filtering is nice for smaller screens as it's not demanding, though it does make things look blurry and might cause some weird artifacts. xBR really makes things look HD while still being very clear, however it's more demanding and some android devices might struggle with it on higher resolution games. Edit: Nevermind, I saw there was a 2nd video that did went into those. Anyway, great videos! I really enjoyed them and sent them to a friend who wasn't familiar with duckstation.
I'm glad you realised I made a second video about it as I know you & many others kept wanting me to show the filters xD Me personally I'm not into filters, even with 2D games I like my sharp pixels & that's my preference but I do understand others like them & I hope my second video did a good job showing the differences there :) Appreciated and thank you for the comment 😊
There's a nice option i'm using with DuckStation while playing ParasiteEve2... change all the background images by a high resolution ones... the 3d model now no longer seems "out of place" with this...
When I play Resident Evil 3..I put the resolution down to 720p or 1080p so the character model blends in a little more to the static background...4K makes it stand out way too much
This was a perfect video to watch on V-day 😍 Seriously though, I'm impressed with Duckstation too. I recall the previous PS1 emulator was iffy, but great with certain kinds of games. Duckstation turns PS1 games into PS2 games if the game doesn't rely on interlacing. Hopefully this will inform thousands (let's aim for thousands at least) of more people how great this emulator is.
Well actually only Dead Or Alive had issues with interlaced as I showed two other Hi-Res PS1 games that had no issues :) But yes, Duckstation is definitely impressive and I can't wait to see what the developers do next!
Another great video. On a side note - no one could pigeonhole your gaming tastes - covered all bases and with some more obscure games. Look forward to the next one. Do you have another emulator/ original hardware comparison in mind or are you thinking of doing some community poll or something?
Thank you so much & I hope I can test out more games in the future ^^ There's a few I definitely have in mind but, I would also love to know what viewers would be interested in!
Thank you folks for checking out this video! I really was impressed with Duckstation & remember; It's still in beta! (Also note: RU-vid is slow to process this in 4K so, if you want to wait until the video is fully processed, go for it!
I remember Bust-A-Groove back in the early 2000s. And Resident Evil 3 also has a Dreamcast, Gamecube and PC Versions while Tony Hawk 1 & 2 has Dreamcast and PC Versions.
Emulation when it works well is almost always visually superior to original hardware. Most emulators can also replicate original hardware as well as I myself have used HDMI to AV converters to display some of these emulators on a CRT TV using a game I owned the disc of. It looked and felt exactly the same except I had access to a speed up hotkey on the emulator to get past those slow loading times. There may or may not be input delay but it's nothing I can notice. When it comes to visuals emulators with all effects turned off is pretty much the same as real hardware. There's no real reason to use real hardware anymore unless it's the one random game that does not emulate well which shouldn't happen to often for stuff on PS1.
i prefer the dithered low resolution look of original hardware. it’s just more uniform and leaves more to the imagination though i admit there’s not much benefit to the texture warping beyond nostalgic accuracy demolition racer is fun and has pc & dreamcast versions
I like both :) Emulated or real hardware I love seeing both side by side :) I have both the PS1 & DC versions now so maybe a compensation could be done in the future:)
Dead or Alive runs fine, just rightclick in your games list on DoA, go to properties and then look in the settings, unclick deinterlaced Mode and you're good to go.
I've been playing with duckstation the last few days trying different games and wow. It really is something else. Just the fix to the geometry is enough to make it look good. So far i've found that threads of fate and pandemonium 2 looks incredible, threads of fate specialy since it has a very simple but coherent art design, nothing looks out of place. And on top of that using the widescreen hack (i use an ultrawide monitor) they look amazing. Now, my next dream is to be able to inject via reshade some ambient oclussion and we could have a remaster to basicaly ps2 games. But i don't think that's posible (i've read something about needing access to something that ps1 games just don't have)
Duckstation is definitely fantastic and it is a joy to use :) Seeing how different games look on it with it's perspective correction tools can definitely change the look of a game completely! Well I always say in the future maybe that feature could become available so don't give up on adding that feature!
Great comparison video. Those games really look terrible and dated on a modern monitor as they were meant to be playing on an old TV or PVM. They look decently sharp and blends in together really well, even OSSC can't capture or properly recreate that experience. I'm glad the emulation scene has evolved so much, giving them a new life on a modern monitor. Hopefully, in the far future, there would be some sort of AI upscale involved, letting us upscale those low res backgrounds or sprites to HD.
Prob been asked a million times but what spec machine you running for those duckstation settings? (I am building a rig around a dell with a 4th gen i5.)
This emu looks amazing. And indeed the Dolphin emu is great aswell. But i really prefer Vagrant Story on a traditional CRT with scanlines, (or just Epsxe with scanlines lol). Sorry i know these gief moar scanlines comments are getting a bit old. Gran Turismo looks very impressive, great stuff. How are you btw ?
No its fine aha, obviously retro content will get people who like CRT'S and all that jazz, not an issue to express that :) I still prefer real hardware albeit using my OSSC on my 4K TV xD Duckstation is definitely great to see though ^^ Not too bad thank you, just slowly working on my final two videos for the channel at the moment ^^
You can make the emulator look a bit more CRT-like with the post-processing effects (I use a combination of scanlines and bloom, and x2 internal resolution to keep a moderate amount of pixelation). It's obviously not the same, but it looks nice for a low end laptop.
@@Denkersis That's fair although I'm not into the CRT look myself & running a 4K display I'd rather have sharp graphics but hey, it's great we can choose how we want the games to look :)
Unfortunately a lot of the issues can be fixed or improved in many ways, for RE3 it was the use of prospective corruption that caused the problem, turning it off actually made the game better while keeping the resolution bump :)
@@TheAffroShowGameplay Ah cool, yeah there's some super impressive effects if you tinker around with them. I was playing Die Hard Trilogy on it last night, loads of tiny details I'd never seen before, same with Ridge Racer. Amazed devs made such high resolution art for billboards Etc. in these games.
@@Larry I think what I will do is either another emulator vs real hardware video for that or even an emulator battle & include that 3D wide-screen! Can't wait to try it out!
@@Larry The wide screen hack is good for full 3D games like most PS1 racing but will be problematic with games that used 3D models walking on 2D background like Resident Evil or Final Fantasy series.
The Duckstation is Great for full 3D games, but it doesn't look good in games with pre-rendered backgrounds, unless the background images was modded for higher resolution..
Graphics have come as far as they can emulating the PS1...what PS1 games really need now from the emulation community are stable, per game 30fps & 60fps patches.
@@TheAffroShowGameplay I would even sacrifice the high res graphics for stable frame rates, TBH. The likes of Gran Turismo 1&2 at a locked 30fps would make them far nicer to play than higher resolutions IMO. Native PS1 resolution can be mitigated with nicely configured CRT shaders, but there is nothing you can do about framerates in the low 20's (or even lower in some cases!)
Admittedly I'm so used to playing the games on real hardware, I don't mind their frame rates (I'm also from the UK so we only got 25fps or 50fps lol) But again, I would love to see improved frame rates, although I do know you can overclock the cpu in Duckstation so that might help, I remember ePSXe had that feature & games could boost up to their maximum frame rates & stay there :)
@@TheAffroShowGameplay Overclocking the CPU option just makes the games run faster in some scenarios but that causes issues with the games engine, so it can screw up timings & physics and cause the games to crash or just play incorrectly. Its a very crude way to increase framerates. Proper patches actually adjust the games at a code level to stop any of those problems.
I actually did try it out but I wanted the texture filter to be closer to real hardware so that people could see how this was affected by the higher resolution & anti-aliasing but, thank you for the heads up :)
1:36 if you used XBR filter instead of nearest neighbor those texts would be super smooth edit: you should have also used geometry correction to fix unnecessary moving of dead bodies edit: you also can force progressive scanning instead of interlaced even on Interlaced games
I didn't on purpose as I wanted to show people more apples to apples comparison against Real hardware :) I'm certain I had Geometry Correction enabled xD As stated in the video during the Dead Or Alive segment, I did enable this but it did not work with Dead Or Alive, it work on other games with interlaced video output :)
Dude you choose "nearest neighbour" as the texture filtering option in the settings which basically does nothing, you could have everything looking even better than this if you want and the texture filtering can indeed improve the detail of 2d sprites, use bilinear filtering at a minimum and xBrz to properly improve texture detail.
Already made a newer version of this video mate, I showed the filters in some detail but overall I still prefer nearest neighbour :) Obviously if you don't or you like filters that's great but they aren't for me ultimately ^^
There was an update yesterday and w some adjustments we can have better quality graphics in games w rendered backgrounds like the resident evils. But I still see a problem in them. Even with the WS Hack the resolution of the 3dD itens in the scenarios doesnt match any other resolution than the origianl 4:3.
@Geoff Tolle They still look bad like that. Disabling interlacing rarely does anything good on my end. Hopefully we'll get some deinterlacing options. I'd like to use bob.
@Geoff Tolle As mentioned in the video mate, did that & in some games (Dead Or Alive was the obvious example here) it did not make a difference but as I then showed, it did work in other games that used interlaced output so, it still needs some work :)
I just had a quick watch & the emulator is the smoother of the two although I was using an NTSC version on emulator, the real hardware was a PAL copy so that one is choppier definitely:)
It's one fun to do & two I like to find out so others can see the results should they want to try it, at least they know what effect the emulator might have :)
At this time it cannot although you can burn disk files from original disks, that will work :) But if you meant playing from a disk directly like in ePSXe, sadly that's not supported :o I also hope this will become a feature in the future for Duckstation :)
Bear with me xD Intel i7 6700K Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 16GB RAM Z170 Gaming Motherboard Then I used typical HDD drives if that matters lol The PC is 5 years old now :)
I plan to do that but it's time consuming plus I want to save on space on my PC, ripping games that are up to 600mb takes up space quickly so I love the idea of putting in a disk & just playing straight from it like in ePSXe :) That's just me though :)
Just go into the settings & you will find it, it'll say console settings & just hit enable clock speed control:) Then adjust the slider as high as you want to overclock the system :)
Выглядит отвратительно 4K! Разрешение PS1 нужно увеличивать максимум в два раза, а потом применять какие ни будь фильтры сглаживания. А то сплошные угловатые персонажи.
Because I'm using a real PS1 lol? How it's displayed doesn't matter, the OSSC just helps me capture the footage at high quality & it's from the hardware itself:) Plus many people are so used to emulated footage, many don't know what the consoles image quality actually looks like xD Hence the 'real' part of the title :)
@@TheAffroShowGameplay Yes it's from OSSC hardware. Not PS1 hardware. 😜 So of course it matters how it is displayed There is zero reason why you would call it PS1 hardware. PS1 hardware would be specifically made for PS1 only. The hardware used is multiplatform..... edit: I do like the content anyway though. Because I do like classic gaming. Hence my name. 😁
Sadly the channel is English speaking only & I don't have the time to subtitle it in any other language at this time unfortunately, maybe in the future when I take a break :)
