Welcome to Season 5 of Affro's Curiosities! I hope you folks look forward to what I have to offer this time around!!
Today's episode has me returning to the PS2 & checking out the games running on a real PS2 using the OSSC & an RGB Scart cable against a PS2 emulator - PCSX2 Version 1.6.0!
What will the results be? How do the games fare on both platforms? Which one would you prefer?

For Recording This Video I Used:
- A Fat PAL PS2 Was Used
- OSSC Was Set to 480i/576i Passthrough For Interlaced Content
- OSSC Was Set To 480p/576p Line 2x for Progressive Scan Content
- All PS2 Footage Was Recorded In OBS & Used The Yadif 2x De-interlacing
- RGB Scart Sync On Luma Cable Was Used

A test of Software Mode vs a real PS2 is much more valuable in terms of how far accuracy has come. The problem with Hardware Mode rendering is that it still can't achieve full effects of the PS2 chip.

Top-notch quality. I adore looking at upscaled PS2 hardware and emulation footage as crisp as yours here. And I've definitely grown to PCSX2 overtime, despite the hassle of setting it up on a per game basis. The lack of interlacing in its emulation already sells it to me as a comfy option to play PS2.

aliasing was always an issue for PS2 games (we used to call them "jaggies") PCX2 fixes all of this, this is a dream come true. when I was a kid back in 2002 I imagined how much better PS2 games would look with anti-aliasing and now I know. 8:10 would have been a great opportunity to compare the Sega Dreamcast version with the PS2 and PCSX2

My cousin had a tv that made the ps2 games have almost 0 jaggies but I can’t remember the tv, only thing I remember is the brand! Sharp!

Tekken 5 is solely the reason I bought an NTSC PS2 Slim and NTSC copy of the game, so I can play it in progressive scan on my TV.

Yeah it's disappointing that the PAL version removed this feature although it still supports 60hz so I can live without that feature:)

Thank you very much! This is a great job. I enjoy playing ps2 at native resolution because it's enough for me although we can see how much graphic quality is improved by emulation, but the sound is rare ...

Admittedly I could have changed the sound settings in PCSX2 & I believe it would have matched real hardware but, since most people will not realise that, I left it as what the emulator has by default:)

Good video and good memories, I love this emulator I really encourage you to test the pcsx2 developer builds until they release the next official version, dev builds fixed several bugs and are by far better I believe.

Honestly, I think I still prefer the original hardware. Is true that PCSX2 offers a more clear, vibrant image, but the graphical issues are a deal breaker for me

It's due to software rendering wasn't turned on, hardware rendering = better FPS, software rendering = Better presentation that looks truer to the original

Bear in mind this video is three years old, PCSX2 has come a long way & actually Hardware mode is much better but, software is still better for a more accurate experience:)

I also love the PS2 and play mine regularly. I tried emulation but some glitches and missing effects in some games made me go back to the original hardware. I use GBS Control's adaptive deinterlacing to deal with those games that won't work with forced progressive scan, and I also use a cheap consumer CRT monitor to display at 640x480 since the internal resolution cannot be upscaled anyway and I think these lower resolutions are much more attractive on a CRT.

Fair enough, as you know I prefer my OSSC but as long as you like your setup, that's all that matters :D PS2 is also still a great system to play :)

I have many memories of the PS2 as well, and it was pretty revolutionary at the time. I mostly played a lot of Tekken even though I never got any good at it. PCSX2 definitely has a huge potential. Overall, you already explained why, and did so beautifully.

Ah I have a lot of PS2 memories & I loved all kinds of games :)) It does but PCSX2 needs more work, it's still bit hit & miss :)

Very good job friend It is amazing what the emulator can do, I have had the joy of testing it with almost all my ps2 games and it literally feels like you are playing a new game, you can observe details that you never imagined seeing in ps2 games Unfortunately the low resolution of the ps2 at present is quite poor, but with the correct setup you can enjoy it perfectly without the need for an emulator. My conclusion is that we should try both worlds and make the most of them !!! saludos amigo

It's awesome to see how good emulating the PS2 is. My PS2 broke recently just from too much use I assume, so I'm looking into emulating.

I would cry if my 20 year old PS2 finally stopped working lol xD Emulation of the PS2 is good but, it still needs a bit more work before I can definitely say yes, it's finally safe to rely on PS2 emulation from now on :)

@@TheAffroShowGameplay It really sucks because it is *almost* working too. The disc drive is really slow, and the display keeps cutting out. But PS2 emulation is pretty good, not perfect though. Been playing Burnout 3, and having to deal with the black sky issue.

I think the PS2 hardware has a deeper, quieter sound to it with perhaps a touch more reverb. PCSX2's sound is louder and brighter, but with more harshness to it.

I'm not sure how to describe the sound differences but I know PCSX2 is getting better these days & the sound settings can always be changed although, I was wowed by the PS2 in the sound department ^^

Nice! You could have shown the games running at native res. I only use native res because it helps conceal some low res details / low polygons. However, some games do benefit a lot from a higher res.

@trapez77 Everyone will have a different take :) Believe it or not I too mostly play at native mainly to preserve the original look but again, this is video is meant to show what can be done rather than oh upscaling is better:) It is completely up to you to choose how you want to play games via emulation or real hardware :)

15:38, you can switch from 16:9 letterbox to proper 16:9 in the options menu of the game. options>screen adjust>widescreen: on/off

I personally use de-interlacing codes. Much cleaner than the built in pcsx2 de-interlacing that just kind of masks it instead of actually disabling it like the pnach codes do.

From what I’ve read and seen, the PS3 EO1 is partial emulation for PS2 games. Turning on smoothing makes them look incredible. But that’s only if you have the EO1 model

Luckily, you can mod the slim models now to restore the partial PS2 emulation which is great as those older models are rare, expensive & break down often :o

@@TheAffroShowGameplay ps3 model cecha01 american version has emotion engine cpu of ps2 gs gpu of ps2 ram bus but it lacks io processor wich is ps1 cpu.B01 same thing only it has no wi fi chip.E01 has gs gpu of ps2 only rest is emulated.By installing the cfw on the ps3 slim models up to cech 25xx or later models are hen compatible and they can do the same. You can play the ps2 games but the compatibility is hit and miss.Less than E01 model wich has 90% compatibility.Right now with the state of pcsx2 and chosing the software rendering mode enabling 60 fps hacks by supported games,selecting the audio to be ps2 like and chosing scanlines my preferred solution.But if you like real hardware than best would be scph 5xxx ps2 model with modchip on sony crt tv or plasma tv or get the cecha00 japanese ps3 fat 60 gb and with smothing on best image on the native hardware .Freemcboot and opl lot of problems with that one I had.To much bugs and unnecessary load on the iop.

Kept you waiting, huh? 4:45 - UK Version of Tekken 5 didn't have Progressive Scan? 8:04 - I've heard that the PS2 Version of Dead Or Alive 2 had not only 60 Frames PerSeconds, but some Graphical improvements over the Dreamcast Version. 10:51 - I heard that Final Fantasy X couldn't be hacked to be 60 FPS no matter what because of a coding. I don't understand. 🙁 11:50, 12:32 & 19:06- I wish there's a Compelation Collection for Tekken, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter and Dead Or Alive. 😑 14:27 -The HD Remaster of Resident Evil Code Veronica X is weird because some parts of the FMVs are 20 Frames PerSeconds at times. 15:12 - The PS2 Version of Resident Evil 4 is apparently a Downgraded Version with not only the Graphics, but the sound was compressed and apparently the Cutscenes had to be in Video form because the PS2 Version couldn't handle the High Quality Realtime Cutscenes from the Gamecube original. The game has a Widescreen Setting since the PS2 Version. 19:57 - I never understood what was wrong with Tekken 4. Maybe it's because of some of the Characters' Fashion? Or one of the Grab functions was changed? Apparently there are problems with the PCSX2 Versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3. Transparencies don't seem to work in MGS2 while MGS3 you will see black spots in outdoor areas, filter issues and water effect issues if you're using Widescreen Hack.

It would be interesting to see games like the 3d era GTAs emulated since they have unique effects like the orange lighting in SA that is not present in the PC version. I wonder if PCSX 2 is capable of emulating those effects properly.

And also upscaling the ps2 games just looks flat . The lighting in ps2 was always subpar maybe more setting on psx wil drop that make the games look better All ps2 games should had 480p modes

This is an older video now so important improvements have been made & of course settings can be changed :) Plus it looks flat because I hadn't fixed the contrast settings at the tike :) Sadly not many PS2 games had 480p progressive scan modes although some can be forced using Free MCBoot buy, everyone has a different taste on PS2 graphics:)

Man, great channel but it would be a fair comparisson playing ps2 on a crt tv with component cables, will look better than 1080p on lcd. Besides the "on the field" more appreciation, all the effects are there and no need for hacks. Please ps2 + trinitron tv or any crt via component as comparisson

Sadly that's subjective as I like my 4K display with the OSSC & while I respect CRT's I have no room or need for one :) I understand the appeal of one no doubt but I'm focused on retro consoles on newer TV's so people can see that retro consoles can still work & look good today:) If you still game on a CRT, awesome, keep rocking it :)

Yes I just noticed too, must be the way the water was rendered in software causing it to look weird when given an upscale boost :) If played in software mode, it'd look the same as the PS2 footage!

Not quite sure what you mean by that but I agree PCSX2 does look better although the charm & nostalgia of PS2 games still keep me wanting to experience the real hardware :)

PS2 emulation have come a long way, personnaly I play almost my entire ps2 library on pcsx2 now, not on real hardware But it's really impressive how the OSSC manage to de-squish the image for pal version of Final fantasy X... on my ps2 the game is squish like hell... with black borders all around and slower gameplay... but pcsx2 run my pal copie at 60hz for some reason :/

Yeah the OSSC's upscale changes the aspect ratio & normal PAL games are displayed with black borders as most games were not PAL optimised :) PCSX2 has a hack which can make PAL games run at 60hz so this might be the reason why :)

Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 :) I now use a Macbook Pro 16 2021 with the M1 Pro chip in videos released after 2022 :)

Let's be clear : I own a PSX and PS2, PS3 for years. But frankly, the rendering of emulators is amazing . The PS2 is a very shitty console regarding aliasing ! My eyes are still bleeding !!

Lol sadly the PS2 never had any xD You can use anti-aliasing tools in emulation but I know they eat away proformance so use those at your will xD I still love the way PS2 games look but that's my opinion:)

@@TheAffroShowGameplay yeah, PS2 games are very specific for the image!! One of my friend sold me an Mclassic dongle which can improve the quality of the image. It's not "breath taking" but it can improve the image.

@@TheFrenchy82 You can buy a mclassic adapter since it adds in Anti-Aliasing for ps2 games. I was playing Tekken 4 on my PlayStation 3 with the widescreen patch and mclassic on. The game looks pretty nice!

It's a misconception, it is a good deinterlacer but a lot of people don't like the Bob deinterlacing characteristic:) Either use passthrough to let the display deinterlace instead if you'd prefer that:)

No way i can play on the ps2 nowdays...soo blurry and the aliasing is all over the place. pcsx2 is the best for me:) some games can look like there are on ps3 or even better on those high res:)

bruh those are not "minor glitches" when a third of the screen goes black and whole chunks of image dissapear, you keep saying those can be fixed in setting, but you don't actually show if it's possible or not. A minor glitch is something like in wrc3 with the line going through 2d interface and even that is very noticable and will get annoying fast imo, the stuff in ghost hunter is straight up unplayable if it's happening on every screen in the game. I don't enjoy interlaced picture myself, but i'd take that any day over actual visual glitches, especially the ones as noticable as that.

Everyone is different, to me those are minor glitches but we agree to disagree lol :) For the vast majority of the games tested, I did off screen try to see if problems could be fixed & mkst could but, there's so many different settings it wasn't practical to show this as different games require different settings tweaks or in some cases, a change to the render mode :) Ultimately, if something does bother you visually during gameplay, you'll have to see if any setting will fix the glitches that might occur :) Obviously this video is old so if you want me to in a future production, I could better show what some possible fixes are & how they might solve some games :)

That's interesting because on my Steam Deck I find it a little bit more responsive or it could be me but, I personally haven't had input lag :)

@@TheAffroShowGameplayI tried pcsx2 but it feels like I am playing on a cloud gaming I need to buy this av cable and and CRT and a not broken PS2 controller 😂 I would wanted to buy component cable but where I live in almost no crt tvs has component cable support and also converters is expensive as used PS2

@ArdaU Everyone is different & bear in mind this is an older video, PCSX2 has improved greatly since then :) If you still prefer real hardware with a CRT, go for it but the choices are there :) ultimately you just have to go with what is best for you & upgrade when you feel you can to a better cable, RGB SCART is a cheaper alternative with the same video output quality as Component if you use quality cables :)

The interlacing of the PS 2 is actually a graphical / aesthetic catastrophe.

Well interlacing is just something you can't change on PS2 unless the game had 480p support although, PS2 emulation now allows for Motion Adaptive Deinterlacing which is a huge boost for Deinterlacing:)

@@TheAffroShowGameplay I was about to mention that OSSC doesn't have motion adaptive deinterlacing and instead uses Bob deinterlacing which isn't that good, also if used with good upscaler/deinterlacer combined with mclassic I found that PS2 from actual console can look very good!

Oh I've mentioned the OSSC's Bob deinterlacing method for a long time now & it's been a staple in many of my videos:) Ultimately there's many ways to try and deinterlace PS2 or any interlaced games but for me, passthrough using OBS, a motion adaptive deinterlacer or emulation are the best solutions :) I don't mind the OSSC's Bob deinterlacing in 480i games but this is all preference :)
