Hey y'all and welcome to Sewspire!
Today I am here to show you how to sew a duffel bag with zippered top closure. This particular bag is sized to meet carryon requirements and makes a wonderful travel bag because you can fold it flat and tuck several of them inside your suitcase with ease.
When finished your travel size duffel tote bag will measure approximately 17" across the base, 8" tall and 9" deep.
For this project you will need one 18" zipper and 2 yards of cotton twill fabric such as the beautiful Premier Prints I used to craft the sample bag from:
www.fabric.com...
To begin, you will need to precut your material to the following dimensions:
Cut six 10" x 18" panels for the body
Cut four 10" x 10" panels for the sides
Cut four 5" x 20" panels for the zipper casing / gusset
Cut two 6" x 25" panels for the handles
I hope you enjoy the sewing project and will share photos of your finished duffel bags on the Sewspire Facebook and Instagram pages using @sewspire and #sewspire .
I will be back next week with another inspired travel themed project. Until then, please know the creative genius in me salutes the creative genius in you!
XO,
Andrea
P.S. Congratulations to Janice Centritto as she is the Happy Mail winner of the patchwork dachshund pup we made last week! If you would like to enter to win this week's travel sized duffel bag, you can sign up here:

I made a similar size with oval ends rather than square about 20 years ago. I mare it from 6 log-cabin style squares that measured approximately 12” square. I used it for travel to various teaching conferences and it was always easy to spot on the luggage carousel.

Hi Andrea, I have been sewing for 50 years,..wow, hard to believe it's been that long, my mom taught me how to sew and then I took sewing in home economics in high school. I have made many of your market tote bags and given them as gifts!!! You are by far the BEST teacher on you tube!!!! Just wanted you to know how much I appreciate the way you explain and how soothing your voice is. Thank you for all you do. Lots of love, GAIL

Thank you for another great tutorial. I know several people commented on your peaceful voice, in my opinion it is natural you do not have to slow it down so much I feel like we are up late with a glass of wine and your trying not to fall asleep........lol lol.........you are blessed with a kind gentle voice ...no need slowing it down.

L-O-V-E it!!! I have lots of extra fabric from making my 1st grandson's quilts, bibs, etc... so I just need to go purchase a zipper and I can make a scrappy duffle to match his nursery. I figure she can use it for the baby's laundry or all his things for a day or weekend trip! Thank you for this!

Ooooo Andrea! All your bags are beautiful and you make sewing them look so easy! I finished my duffle bag tonite. There was some frustrations but I always like a challenge. I used some upholstery material I had for the exterior and then quilt cotton for interior. The bag did come together and I enjoyed sewing it. It's not perfect but it's finished. I will make another because I love the bag. I will use a different material though. Im so glad I found your channel and always look forward to your videos

I'm going to have to rethink the fabric. I thought I had twill but this fabric is something else. I can't cut it straight and it turns into lint when I try to cut it. I've never seen a fabric disintegrate like this before. My sewing machine doesn't like it either.

Andrea, when you sew the ends, can you sew them from the inside? Open up the bag with the zipper and turn it inside out then sew the ends and then turn it right back out again, or would it be to much bulk? I love this bag, I can't wait to try to make it. Love your tutorials !🌷
@Sewspire
@Sewspire 7 лет назад
That is a great question Nancy! You can certainly turn the bag inside out and stitch on the interior rather than the exterior. If you do, please share a close up photo with our community of the finished bag at that point so we can compare the techniques. You can post that direct to our community Facebook page @sewspire or email it to me and I will share a side by side comparison photo sewinginspiration@gmail.com Thanks so much for asking! XO, Andrea

for the measurements you also had on there you need 2 yards of fabric, would that be altogether or 2yds for the outer and 2 yds for the lining?

It looks like you’ve sewn one short end on the zipper gusset. When you are attaching the gusset, the zipper does not separate. Is that correct?

Is 2 yards of fabric the total amount needed? I want to make the outside and inside different patterns, so should I get one yard of each?

Hello Kaitlyn! Two yards of 54" fabric should be enough. And, I would get one yard of each.
