Australian brown snakes are deadly venomous elapid snakes. One of them is the Dugite (Pseudonaja affinis). It can grow to about 2 meters and often lives close to people (for example in Perth). Dugite venom is less toxic than venom of the Eastern brown snake (one of the most venomous snakes in the world), but still easily potent enough to kill an adult human. Dugites are fast and very alert snakes. Enjoy watching our video showing these snakes in their natural habitat.

Walking in our park last summer my wife and myself came across a very large Dugite dragging a still alive Bobtailed Goanna across the path. It was trying to fit the goanna through a ring lock fence on the side. I learnt two things that day. Snakes kill and eat Bob Tailed Goannas not the other way around. Snakes actually very loudly hiss. The snake thought we were going to take the goanna and it turned towards us and paused hissing loudly. It need not have worried.

Do you mean Bobtail or Shingleback? These lizards don't eat snakes, correct. A goanna or monitor lizard can eat snakes. Thanks for sharing this experience!

As usual my favorite cinematographers! The Dugite is an interesting animal and people seem to underestimate the strength of it's venom which by now has somewhat evolved to envenomate mammals as well.

Thanks and great photography. I worked in the field all around the Cooper basin and flood plains, covering hundreds of km's of driving every day so we got to see LOTS of snakes. They are all colour schemes, the predominant species was I believe the king brown. I managed to get a large number of great photos and even a short, maybe 40sec close up video of an inland Taipan hunting the cracks in the Cooper flood plains. He had no concern with us as we followed closely as he checked cracks before quickly moving on then....in an instance he was gone. Love your vids especially Australian inland snakes.

I wonder how venomous this species is in comparison to its more well known relatives like the Eastern Brown. Excited for this upcoming “doc” on this species that I have never heard of.
@christophersmith2470
@christophersmith2470 2 месяца назад
An eastern brown has a LD50 of approx 0.035-0.04 whereas the Dugite has one approx 0,50-0.55, so the eastern is about 13-15 times more toxic than the Dugite, but the quantity injected is more than double from the Dugite. Either would 100% kill an adult human w/out ICU level medical treatment, and anti-venom would have to be administered in 100% of the envenomations.
@KahanuErmeyas-Tulu
@KahanuErmeyas-Tulu 2 месяца назад
@@christophersmith2470 Interesting, I expected the Eastern Brown to have the more toxic venom out of the two but I definitely didn’t expect the Dugite to be able to inject venom in larger quantities. Thanks Christopher!
@christophersmith2470
@christophersmith2470 2 месяца назад
@@KahanuErmeyas-Tulu Yeah, the eastern is noted for injecting very small quantities of venom despite being a large species. Its small fangs have something to do with that I'm sure. You're welcome:)

The Eastern brown snake has a lot more toxic venom than the Dugite, the Western brown snake has a slightly more toxic venom than the Dugite. All of these brown snakes have venom potent enough to easily kill an adult human.

For a snake enthusiast, never heard of this one before! Beautiful species, color & (dot) patterns. Perhaps all brown species have similar kind of venom & potency? And hence not a surprise that this one too is, like the Eastern brown or King brown?

Thanks for watching! Brown snakes in general have very potent venoms. The Ling brown, also called Mulga snake, is actually a black snake (Pseudechis genus). The common name is very misleading.

I think all the Australian browns starting with the inland tipan to the coastal, the common brown they all will kill you dead it's just the frequency of human encounter that makes 1 more dangerous than the other. Please correct me if I'm wrong. ✌️🇺🇸
@LivingZoology
@LivingZoology 2 месяца назад
Thank you for watching! All snakes you mentioned have highly potent venom, yes. But some, like the Inland taipan, are usually quite calm and placid. Taipans are not brown snakes, the closest taipan in terms of behavior to brown snakes is the Coastal taipan. Among brown snakes, the Eastern brown snake is the most defensive and common, so it causes many bites.
