Duke: A Love Story -- A rare 1983 interview with Pat Stacy, John Wayne's secretary and final love

John Wayne's secretary and girlfriend, Pat Stacy, participates in the only available video interview unearthed so far of her years spent with Duke. The video quality drops considerably in quality as it progresses; however, the audio is perfect.
Hired after Duke's longtime secretary, Mary St. John, retired in 1972, Stacy & the legendary actor became a couple while on location for McQ in June 1973. She remained by his side until his death from stomach cancer six years later.
Stacy is asked some tough questions by Connie Martinson, a local San Diego television personality, on July 21, 1983, shortly after the publication of her book, "Duke: A Love Story."
Candid to a fault, Stacy discusses her actual paycheck, the Wild Goose (Duke's beloved boat), Duke's family, the man behind the image, Pilar Wayne, their relationship, his valiant battle against cancer and inexplicable attempt to end his life, and much more.
Sadly, Stacy would pass away 12 years later in 1995 of lung cancer. She is rarely mentioned in recent projects authorized by the Wayne estate, but she was definitely a major part of his life. Her memoir is available on Amazon or eBay in used copies only.
The video is for educational purposes only. No copyright infringement is intended, and it is courtesy of the Drucker Institute via Claremont Colleges Library.

I fell in love with John Wayne as a child and still relish his movies and admire the man offscreen as well as onscreen. As a young, teenage girl, I was simply devastated when his character died in The Cowboys. My own dear, sweet Father looked and sounded quite a bit like John Wayne. My Father was the best man I will ever know. It pleases me to know The Duke had love and companionship in the last years of his life. It is lovely to give the world insight into the man rather than the roles he played. However, I cannot help but feel he would have preferred Pat keep more intimate facts about their relationship private. He struck me as being private about private matters. He was a class act in a world diminished by current celebrities.

I agree! Thank you. I think anyone who knew anything about John Wayne and all he stood for would be ashamed of what this woman says in this interview. I would never buy or read this book so I can’t comment on that. But I agree. She disgraces him and therefore, disgraces herself. What a shame. I’m so glad you had a wonderful father. God bless you. Thanks for the honest comment.

She’s a very beautiful person and I believe she and him seems to have been great friends and companions and God Bless you Mam for being with Duke through a difficult time My husband and I was going through that other a family member because that’s a wonderful time and a horrible time when someone has cancer and lives with a person that they love is so very difficult and omg a labor of love to see them out of this world as they suffer from horrible pain and they are not themselves at times so I’m very glad to hear Duke had a companion that assisted and loved John Wayne as he was a wonderful father, person and a great star but I loved Duke because of the man he was!

Love your reminiscences and to hear what a warm and friendly man he was. I'm 64 and still a big fan of John Wayne's and the movies he did with John Ford. I'm from San Francisco and It wasn't until I moved to Liverpool, England In the 1970s that I realized how immensely popular John Wayne westerns were and are. One of the people I used to run into a lot at our neighborhood pub was Kenny the Cowboy. Kenny always had his big cowboy hat on when he did his pub rounds. Kenny, I believe spent a lot of time watching John Wayne movies. Those were the days when you didn't have to leave theater after he showing was over. Kenny knew lines from John's movies and I swear he would even tear up a bit during the sentimental speeches. He had lots of fans, but Kenny Jones on Wavertree Road had to be the biggest!

i was a young copper in london in 75 when i met him while controlling crowds during the shoot out in brannigan filmed in little venice he was fit happy and very polite the ill health that dogged him during the shootist was non apparent.he was amazing to his fans and after the shot was filmed took us judy geeson all the crew and stuntmen into a local pub for lunch not reserved but walked in off the street like any tourist. bought drinks and food for everyone including the locals got into a marathon drinking session with londoners and was courteous to all signed autographs posed for pictures and was a genuine pleaure to be with.finally he called it a day thanked the staff insisted on giving everyone working in the pub a hundred dollar tip even the cook and paid the huge bill out of his own pocket my collegue said you are very good to your fans the duke replied ..no they are very good to me im nothing they are what makes me a star and i never forget.a lovely man and boy could he drinkbeer wine and a bottle or two of whiskey and he seemed as sober as when he walked in a true legend

I respectfully disagree. If this woman was so great. She would never have been in this interview because she knew this woman and what she was about. The fact is, ppl do interviews to sell books. Also, if you really listen to this Pat, you’ll hear her liberal slights at the Duke. I think it’s a disgrace. Too bad ppl have to profit off of what should have been his most private time of his life. Says a lot about her, I say.

I don't know what Pat Stacy's motivation was for writing the book, maybe it was because after Duke's death the family ignored her. She was a university graduate, unlike Duke's three wives, and she shows her "class" and intelligence in this interview. She didn't go on all the network morning shows to publicize her book, she was a "low key" person. She did too young of cancer in 1995. RIP, Pat.

I’d like to read about his life, but not in the way this woman writes. I think she disgraces him by exposing his most private last years, struggling with a terrible disease. Anyone with real morals and dignity, who truly loves someone, and has had the privilege of caring for them in their passing, knows that there are many moments that are absolutely sacred and couldn’t possible share them with anyone. But she does. $$$ Anyway, would you suggest what the best bios are of the Duke? I’ve become a fan these past few years and I’d love to read about his life from a well discerned honoring position. Thank you.

Too bad this woman takes this iconic man’s last days and divulges them. Whether true or not, I think it’s disgraceful. Anyone who truly loves anyone and is there is their last days, knows that there are moments that are so sacred and no moral human being could divulge them. The comments she makes about, what is she “going to do for work after he fires her?” Is ludicrous because the host of the show opens up with how could this young accomplished collage graduate ends up with this older man. The comments the host makes about how John must have been more liberal because he was generous in buying the author’s dresses, is ridiculous. John Wayne made no bones about being a flag waving, true American Republican. Therefore, its also a disgrace when this author comments on how lucky she was to be with John after “all of that Viet Nam stuff”. I wouldn’t buy or read this woman’s book if she paid me. I’m not distracting her. I think she did a fine job of that all by herself.
