Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Abraham Lincoln said, “you can please some of the people some of the time , but you cannot please all of the people all of the time.” Jim gives the horses his best, thats why they are so calm and obedient. Duke and Earl looked magnificent front and back in their new harnesses, beautiful.

Stall's, Looking at the horses, THEY, look happy and content in their environment and that is the main, important, thing. They happily walk to them, by themselves, after drinking and must feel secure in their own space. People forget, animals think differently from us. The Harnesses look great, because they are worn by a well matched pair of young horses coming into their prime. This show's Jim's experience and skill, to have picked two colts and then brought them on to this stage. Duke was pretty stoic, "what's the boss want now". Carry on Jim, it works for you and we have the pleasure of coming along and being able to share these moments

Brenda is right that your horses have a very good and balanced mind. It is certainly very important in relation to the genes, but most of all the environment they are in is important for their development, well-being and abilities. It is clear that they are safe and in good mental balance.

I'm just a 'City Slicker' when it comes to farming !! Box stalls, straight stalls, whatever - it's the farmer's choice !! I have a lot of respect for Jim (and Brenda !!) and if their preference is 'straight stalls' for their horses - it's good enough for me !! Onwards and Upwards, Jim and Brenda !! My deepest respects for you both !! I love your channel and KNOW how much you care about ALL your horses !! I've been following along on your channel for nearly two (2) years now and enjoy every minute !! Abby's channel, too !! What a gifted young lady if whom tou can be proud !! 😅❤

The colts are 4 yrs old now, weaned the day Jim picked them up, 9 months old and not looking like much at all, in the rough and unhandled. But that day he also looked at the sire, and the dams, and I saw what Jim saw, just magnificent, and in work. Baron popped up as a sort of going concern, and he grabbed that mountain of a gold mine. Now 2 fillies by Baron from Lady, and Baron's seed in storage. The pulling community is gonna have to up its game! Greetings from Australia.

Another thing I grew up with, is the idea that horses need other horses for company. Well my pony likes meeting other horses. But when she comes home she does not want them. She's in a stable behind the house and she knows where I am. I think the important thing is to check they are sleeping properly

What a handsome team all hitched up in their new harnesses! Mighty fine horses you've got Jim and Brenda! I'd never heard of Suffolk Punch breed until you got Duke and Earl. I'm in love with the breed now!!!! They are such good tempered horses!❤ Smart too! I think they'd be really fun to ride. Wish you and Brenda had saddles so you could go riding together!! Hope y'all get some relief from the extreme heat soon. Down here in northeast Tennessee, we are supposed to be in the upper 90s (possibly 100 by weekend) for about a week starting today. Just remember to stay well hydrated yourselves and the horses too. I'd say Duke and Earl will need long drinks of water back at the barn! Have a wonderful weekend!😘

Those harnesses are beautiful! Brenda, you crack me up! My cows were that way, you would let them out on a hot day, they would go down by the creek and lay down under the shade tree, when they're doing that they're not making milk! So, no matter how much you wanted to get to the hay field, I always got the cows, put them in the barn, turn the fans on, give them hay, and they were comfortable, because they would be lying down chewing their cud, that's a happy cow! Some days, when it was hot, I just left them in the barn!

I too would only consider box stalls. Not any more because your houses say it all to me. Brenda, you keep those horses standing at their very best. They look excitingly gorgeous to me. Jim any criticism regarding how you live your life is (again to me) another person's personal opinion. You and Brenda have become very important people to many of us. No disparagement from us. One side straight stalls for 3 teams and a manger the whole length of the barn. Wood boxes in each corner for oats. Can u image how much manure has been forked out of that barn. PG here, What a great Day. A brand new twin set of horses with brand new gear. A Great start to years of gratitude for perfect fit between horses and drivers. Drivers with an "s" Brenda and Jim. The Lord is doing a new work on the earth in his people. Giving people almost a new life. The eagle does that after 40 years he shed his old beak and talons, molts his feathers and grows everything brand new! copy and paste: General Attributes When an eagle is old, its eyesight dims and its feathers and wings become heavy. To rejuvenate itself, the eagle flies up to the region of the sun, which burns away the mist over its eyes and burns off its old feathers. The eagle then plunges three times into water, and its youth is restored. Also as a result of age, the eagle's beak grows until the bird can no longer eat; by striking its beak against a rock, the eagle breaks its beak which then grows back. The eagle's eyes are very sharp and can see fish when the bird flies over water. The eagle can look directly into the sun. As a test of the worthiness of its young, the eagle holds them up facing the sun. The birds that cannot stare into the sun and turn their eyes away are cast out of the nest. Some authors say that the eagle's rejected chicks are adopted by the coot or the vulture. Allegory/Moral The eagle received both favorable and unfavorable interpretations. As the eagle renews its youth, so too can the man with "old clothes and dim eyes", who should seek the spiritual spring and raise the eyes of his mind to God. The rock on which the eagle sharpens its beak is Christ, on which man can sharpen his soul; the eagle also represents Christ, who came from heaven to catch souls, just as the eagle catches fish. The eagle's ability to look directly at the sun represents Christ's ability to look directly at God, and as the eagle lifts its young to the sun, so do angels lift worthy souls to God.

And yes, that collar will come over the horse or mule head if the back of the harness is missing. My neighbor used the bare minimum harness on his mules. After one disaster of collars hanging from the reins, I learned to hold the mules by the bit rings to keep their heads up when backing.

We live in the desert in California and we get over a 110° in the summer. One thing we do to work with our horses is to wait until sundown, before it gets dark, to do anything with them. It's normally cooler at that time and it's easier to do what we need to do. We make sure they get a nice cool shower afterwards Please make sure you both are drinking a whole lot of water with your heat. We always carry around a bottle or insulated cup with us when we are outside working.

IMO, straight stall would only be bad if the horses weren't worked or had any pasture time. So it's really not any kind stall it's how person works/rides and takes care of their horses! Straight stalls are much more work and hands on. Stall are great for me who just has 10 acres with trail horses. I'll admit I not experienced enough nor want to take the time straight stalls require. Like you call a whip a whip. I call it a handy stick which is just an extension of my arm. People who don't know get triggered by the word whip.

Hey Jim and Brenda, Thank you for the informative episode of "Working Horses With Jim ". The new harnesses that Eli made you awhile back look terrific and as you stated in time the collars will take the shape and adjust and form to the horses neck and shoulders. I'm really becoming a fan of the Suffolk Punch Horse for their easygoing temperment, size , willingness to accept training and work. I'm like you I always preferred a tram or a single horse to aggressively walk out at a solid 4 beat walk. Jim, It's time to put the standing stall issue to bed . Draft horses are totally more comfortable in standing stalls . A good solid 4 ft, wide standing stall like what you utilize are perfect ..As Heavy Horses age a bit it is much easier for them to stand up if they can brace against the stall wall. Also the bedding and cleaning of the standing stall is half the work as well .Tuesday thru Thursday of this week Atlantic Canada where I reside, has been under a heat and humidity dome Which reached 44 degrees C with heat and humidity or approximately 98 degrees F. Have a peaceful weekend and remember to keep hydrated.

I am a “true” northerner. No tea for me in any form.

My Grandfather never had anything other than box stalls in West Virginia. My Uncle did the same.

Collars. Looks like leather. Do them up with Pears Soap, the clear brown glycerine one. Damp sponge, rub heaps of soap on, no suds. Better than the finest English saddle soap. Soften them up, use them dampish to get a fit. Regarding your straight stalls, the Lippizaners in Vienna live in straight stalls. Jim, there are horse channel trolls who spend their days searching about for things to criticise. Straight stalls would cause trauma and impatience in underworked overfed horses, but for horses like yours, fit and working, this is their refuge. They get to the pasture on their days off, spread out when not working. No-one knows better than you what your horses need. Others may have other ways, neither is wrong.

You could pull the pads out of the collar and once on the horse slide the pad back in. I’ve had to do that some and it works.

Stretch the collars the way i do my tight boots put bags of water in the collars and stick it in the freezer. The freezing water in the bags spreads the boots as it freezes. It does not take long until the water freezes and the collars spread or boots

Jim, do you remember the days of shoe trees? For those of us with wide feet, they were a foot saver. No wide widths in those days. Could you make a collar tree? Then patent it and get rich 😉
