It's funny, and unfortunate, that so many people don't dig Duke. After all, Miles sure did, he knew he was indebted to the Jazz Immortals, and he knew that without them he would likely not exist. In 2019 and forward, I suggest that we try to get with, and stay with great jazz. Many of us have traveled just such a simple and similar path with food, cigarettes, wine, etc. At first, we likely did not like those things! Stay with Jazz!, it leads to free and enlightened thinking!

Yes Miles, Dizzy , Mingus and Monk are just some of the jazz giants who appreciated what Ellington had done.

@JimboJazz

He is revered in the jazz world as are the countless musicians who played in his bands.His music is considered far more accessible than Miles or Mingus-mingus worshipped Duke -even after Duke fired him.Who are these critics you talk about?

I saw Duke Ellington's orchestra play at a theatre in Leeds England in 1964. They played a two hour set starting at 8:00 PM. they then played a two hour encore that ended at Midnight.

my late stepfather heard and saw plenty of Jazz greats in Copenhagen KB Hallen, he almost shed a tear when he heard they had caught fire some yrs ago!he was born in 1930 and saw them plenty of times in his youth!his passion was Opera but Jazz had his smiles, but large operas had his tears when the main character belted out their love only to be doomed!

This video is from a kinescope made by Radio Canada for its DVD Duke Ellington Montreal 1964. The show was taped April 20 1964 and reportedly telecast in September that year. The DVD booklet identifies Major Holley on bass. He was only in the band from March to May 1964. Peck Morrison replaced him, and in turn was replaced by John Lamb in August 1964. Benjamin didn't come in until 1970. Sources: Liner notes to DVD, contract between Duke Ellington, Inc. and Casa Loma Cafe Upstairs Room dated April 3, 1964; personnel section of New Desor, Vol.II.

No, this is the upstairs room of Casa Loma Cafe at 94 St. Catherine E., Montreal, known as Le Jazz Hot. I don't think I've documented an Ellington appearance yet at the Casa Loma in Toronto, but he did appear in 1949 at Casa Loma Ballroom in Charleston, WVa. I don't have the Toronto venue in tdwaw.ca (The Duke - Where and When); please let me know if you have evidence of an Ellington appearance there.

The Rabbit looks bored to death. Sam can't tie his bow and the presenter is out of the Fast Show. Great. Mmmmm.

The musicians seem a bit bored - but God knows for which time they are doing this potpourri

They don't sound bored, though - and Hodges always looked like that!

Several of the band members worked with Duke for decades and most for years. They knew the music - but it was always fresh. If they were sometimes a little tired, it's understandable; they lived on the road. For instance, they returned from 35 days overseas in late March, and played in 14 cities in the United States and Canada before this performance on April 20.
