Project: Innovative Approach to the Nuclear Initial License Operator Training Program Design and Implementation

In 2019, Duke Energy began an initiative to streamline the Initial License Operator Training program. We redesigned and implemented a standardized 12-month program to produce highly trained competent operators. Across our nuclear fleet of six plants, training programs ranged from 15-to-24 months and, at times, struggled to keep up with site staffing needs and operator attrition rates. During the two-year period prior to the program redesign, five classes were completed, producing 51 licensed operators. As a result of this initiative, over the past 24 months seven classes have been completed, producing 76 licensed operators with 100% NRC exam pass rate.
