A return to Dumbarton to look at major improvements that are turning the town into a very desirable tourist destination. Dumbarton has always been a great tourist destination, especially as it has a castle; but the castle and the town centre have always been separate, and to get from one to the other has meant an unpleasant walk along a busy road between Dumbarton central and Dumbarton east. Indeed, it may well have been the case that some visitors to Dumbarton just visited the castle and did not venture into the town centre. But all that may be about to change. On an area that was once given over to industry, like shipbuilding and the distilling of whisky, housing and riverside walkways are being created, and visitors can now walk by the River Leven on ground that was at one time inaccessible. In the past I have described Dumbarton as feeling a bit miserable. Given the loss of so much industry, it would not be surprising for a town to struggle under the weight of so much unemployment and feel a tad miserable to visitors. Dumbarton's past industries have included shipbuilding (it is here in Dumbarton that the world-famed sailing-ship 'Cutty Sark' was launched), glass-making (in addition to a bottle-works, at one time Dumbarton's glassworks made most of the high-quality glass used in Scotland), whisky distilling, and the manufacture of aircraft at Blackburn's Aircraft Factory. Dumbarton Rock, on which sits the castle, is said to look like an elephant, and in this video we will look at the town's elephant and castle coat of arms, and follow the new riverside walkway for a bit. The walkway is not yet complete, but when finished Dumbarton will have completed its post-industrial transformation and truly become one of Scotland's desirable tourist destinations.

Another great video eddie. The aircraft factory you talk about was the blackburn aircraft factory which interestingly enough built the first recognised helicopter in 1906 and ended in 1914 due to the 1st world war. It was in conjunction with william denny and made a massive contribution to both the first and second world wars as a "shadow factory" it made over 200 short sunderland flying boats, spitfires, and shark reconnaisance aircraft. At its peak it employed 4000 people from the local area. After the war it was used to construct aluminium pre fab houses and was demolished in 2008 for new housing. Keep up the good work👍

Great information Eddie. I always thought, the Elephant was actually, Dumbuck Hill/Quarry. That definitely looks like, the great head of a bull Elephant.

Many thanks. No, I think the elephant thing is definitely to do with the castle rock. That said, you never know; we may have a pair of elephants. 😜

Very interesting video Eddy, great for you to be out and about again. I have always known Dumbarton to be associated with Ballantine’s whisky, with the iconic rectangular shaped bottle. I was not aware of the Cutty Sark being built in Dumbarton, but it’s great to learn something new every day or so! Enjoy your sense of humour, take care Eddy and best regards, Rob.

Not so sure if that's right, I believe Garvie's was made in Milngavie. Maybe you're thinking of (the far superior 😉) MacDougall's of nearby Bonhill?

Great video as always. The last time I went to the rock there were guys climbing it. It was very impressive to see. I have often wondered about those fallen boulders. I wonder if they were perhaps felled from the area where the castle was to be built? although I have no idea if that would have even been possible in those times. You're right about the old Balletine's works being an ugly building. Don't think many would be sorry to see that being lost. Well said about the Ukraine situation. I think Russia would be well advised to get rid of their bad apple before the rot sets in. Hope all is going well.
@EdExploresScotland
@EdExploresScotland 2 года назад
Many thanks. There is actually a quite smoothish vertical face above the fallen rocks, which is presumably where they've come from, although as you say, did they fall off of their own accord or were they dislodged deliberately.
