A look at things to see and do in Dumbarton, like the castle, the Denny Tank, parts of the Dumbarton Heritage Trail, and river walks. I also give a little background history to the castle and rivers.
Make sure and check my more recent video about Dumbarton: 'DUMBARTON 2 - Rise of the Heffalump'. • DUMBARTON 2 - Rise of ...

Hi Eddy, thank you for this video. I'm Australian but my grandfather and his family are from Dumbarton and emigrated to Australia in the 1920s. This is the first time I've seen the town apart from some old photos. It looks very nice so I'll have to visit one day. Thanks again for putting this together.

Dumbarton was at one time a thriving town, I grew up there you #1 should have checked when the Castle was open to the public before taking the trip. You also chose low tide which does not show the Clyde at its best, There is a lovely walk to Overton house which you did not include. The video was good and brought back many memories but you kind of put the place down had I not been familiar with the town I would probably not viist, So any one reading this do not be put off it is a nice wee town try Spring and Summer for the best views.

Mags, many thanks for your comment. Constructive comments are always welcome, and you've made a number of good points. I'd like to address a few of them. The Dumbarton video was one of the first I made where I was walking and talking in front of the camera. My intention, apart from having a bit of fun in the video environment, WAS to make Dumbarton look good, irrespective of what state the tide was in, and to be honest I think I've made a pretty good job of making Dumbarton look pretty good. I was aware of the fact that many visitors to Dumbarton would not venture into the town centre, visiting just the castle and nothing else, and I wanted to try to show the best side of the town centre. At the time of my visit Dumbarton was in a pretty dismal state. Much of how it appeared was as a result of high levels of unemployment, the resulting closed shops and large numbers of public houses testament to that. The shopping centre was almost completely abandoned, with just a cafe and army recruitment centre, the latter of which has now gone. As far as the castle is concerned, of course I could have checked opening times; I might be an old guy but I have seen a computer! The point I was trying to make was the rather weird and very restrictive opening hours of Historic Environment's castles and other tourist attractions in winter. Not everyone totally plans a visit to a town; some folk just turn up out of the blue, or on a whim. These restrictive opening hours do nothing for the tourist industry in Scotland. For the record, my spit on the walls of Dumbarton Castle was not a real spit, but maybe it should have been. Once again, many thanks. PS - I've already penciled in Overtoun House for my next visit.

As a fellow walker, I really appreciate these. I wish that we had places similar here but this country is too new. You won't find any 1000 year old abbeys, battlefield lead by kings, mystical ancient brochs or ruined castles full of stories and history. When i go on a walk here, it's mostly for the landscape, a waterfall perhaps and some wildlife. If i go today, i would have to bring my heavy duty snow shoes because if i stand on the mound of snow in the front of my house, I can see my backyard! Wanna trade place for a while?

I think it's fair to say that Dumbarton did have a heyday, from the late 19th to 20th century to around WWII. My parents grew up here. I went to school there on a couple of occasions. Spent a lot of time there in the 1980s, as a young adult, living in the United States.

Nice fly wee spit, Eddy! In 1936 my Uncle James N Wallace & some school pals cycled up Dumbarton Rock to see RMS Queen Mary sail by having left the fitting-out basin of John Brown's Shipyard further up the Clyde, on her way for a check-up at Greenock, before going on her sea trials, prior to sailing to Southampton to pick up provisions & passengers and then leaving on her Maiden Voyage to New York. What a great aerial view of her, he and his pals must have had! Thanks for the video Eddy, very entertaining!

Anderson Linton's relaxing day as he drew sketch of Woodyard with Dunbritain Rock and then Scott & Linton marvelous boats and ships next to each other under shipyard expertise. Linn Fern, ' a perfect Beauty ' as builder called her. I'm sorry the far east used the abilities of this wonderful area for eventual war, waste of material and men .

where do you get your walking trousers ?
@EdExploresScotland
@EdExploresScotland 5 лет назад
I used to get them in army surplus type shops, but they're generally new and not surplus. The make was Blue Castle , but the quality of these has deteriorated over the years to the point where I would never buy them again. It's getting harder and harder to find trousers as good as my old ones. I'm so used to them now I'd be struggling with something different. They're ideal for hiking because the material is strong, it dries quickly, and the side pockets are ideal for maps, although a little more length would help in that area.

@@EdExploresScotland The Elephant wasn't the Castle. They were two distinct and different things. The castle is obviously the Castle, but the Elephant is actually Dumbuck Hill that you pass coming from Glasgow along the Stirling Road. At a certain point the hill can be distinctly seen as an Elephant. So, journeying in from Glasgow you'd first pass the Elephant (Dumbuck Hill) and then you'd see the Castle up ahead, hence The Elephant & Castle.

The account of Cutty Sark building by Brettle is a fascinating one. My pet cats & me prosjekt in Cedar Kee , Flowida is a very tiny likeness of Caledonia, made by Wm. Denny & Bros. of iron 20 yes. before the famous Composite Clipper today in Greenwich. Torrens and Dir Lancelot only two examples of big boat built before Harry John Cornish and Bernard Weymouth wrote Rules for Composite Ship in 1868 for Lloyd's. Although we Phoenician interested Hebr. like the water, I look to peaceful peaceable parts of Britain as I work on Caledonia.
