6 children would have starved to death, had it not been for dumpster diving! When I was 5-6 yrs old, in the early '70's, we lived in Garland, TX... My alcoholic/child molesting/wife beating-father ran my mother off. She took the baby, age 2, to a shelter. 6 of us were left to fend for ourselves. THANK GOD we lived across the alley from the Safeway grocery store. Digging food from that dumpster was LITERALLY a life-saver. It was the only food me and my siblings got for several months. Back then it didn't have a snappy name. It was just "digging in the trash". It was NOT gross. It was NOT disgusting. It was a life-saver sent from God. And here, 50 years later, I'm still grateful!
This past Christmas at our local Dollar General they had a wish tree for the kids in town and I picked 2 kids. Then went back the day they were taking it down and there was at least 20 kids left. I had the means so I took the rest of them down and went and bought what they wanted and a little extra. I honestly did not want a kid to wake up and not have something to open.
I run a food and clothing pantry here in the DC area. Dumpster diving has allowed me to provide food and clothing to so many more families than I was able to help before. Thank you for helping that couple. I've met and made friends with so many people that are going through tough times. They appreciate every little thing you can do for them. I saw a homeless man in Baltimore. I went over to him, handed him $10 and he started to tear up. I went on to tell me I was the first person that had spoken to him in over a week. He sad people look disgusted at him and ignore him. So, a kind word goes a long way 💜
You are not gross! What you do is not gross. You need to block people who make those comments. I was homeless for over three years and my own daughter would not help me nor would any of my family. What you did for those people may feel small to you but trust me it was huge to them. Bless you for your inmate kindness. You are just so sweet. Keep up your good work and ignore those awful naysayers.
I worked at a homeless shelter for 5 years and loved every moment of it. I especially loved it when I joined the outreached team and we went looking for our homeless friends and provided some of their basic needs. Kelly you are a great person doing very meaningful things. I got to pay it forward tonight. Motorist was stranded. Motorist had gas but it was in an Obama can. Had a broken bottle trying to use it for a funnel. This was before I arrived . Driver had Spilled it all on the ground. I said I'll return I have gas at home for the generator I can get you some. I had an old can the one with the spout that might spill a drop or so but the bulk of the fuel gets in the car. Never ending reminder that democraps only F things up. Most people rarely ever use a gas can they don't know you have to modify a post Obama administration gas can in order to use it.
What a lovely lesson for everyone to remember. These days, many people are only a step or two away from homelessness. I would totally (and have on occasion) done the same thing. It is hard to believe that here in North(east) Texas, people have to rely on dumpster diving for survival. Your actions are an example to us all that we should give with a cheerful heart. Thanks! I was in Leeds city centre in Leeds Yorkshire England. I had just bought a huge sandwich for myself.I saw a man sitting in a doorway ,he was frozen cold. I gave him the sandwich and bought him a coffee.You have a massive heart.
Don't feel guilty about your diving. YOu are so generous with the things you rescue....garage sales for pay what you want, giving things to shelters, sharing with friends. Etc. You help so many people!
I recently got chatting to a homeless couple and the girl was so cold I felt awful and I told her I had a winter coat at home that she could have if she could wait for me to get back and she agreed she would so I dashed home got the coat and a couple of jumpers and jeans and T-shirt’s and I also put some underwear in the bag unsure of how she would feel but she was absolutely delighted with all of it and was soooooo grateful it really made my day to see her go into the public bathroom and clean up and come out looking warm and comfortable with a big smile on her face she kept thanking me and as I said seeing your smile is thanks enough it is so easy to give someone less fortunate just the time to talk and being able to help is the best gift ever x

I believe things happen for a reason. You meeting this couple in need and sharing your experience was meant to show you (and us) that in the end the most basic and best gift we can give people is kindness.

I don’t think you take it for granted. You are such an amazing kind hearted person. You are saving things from going to the landfill. You don’t dumpster dive to take from the homeless, you do it to help the enviroment. You donate most food, you give things away, you even went and bought them things. People like you are SO rare. If anything maybe help one homeless person a week. I adore you so much.

There is nothing gross dumpster diving, I'm a 55 year old female ive been doing it since i was 9 or 10, I've caught no diseases, if the dumpster is gross u don't dive it!! U r such a nice person, thank u for being so kind to others in need

I think communities need to build some sheds to be used like the little libraries and little free pantries, except have them for clothing and household items.
Kelly you’re a fantastic, kind and generous person. You’re not gross, you’re inspirational. Whenever my family does a clean out or we reorganize an area. We always put the items out at the end of our driveway for free. So far in 8 years everything has been taken. If something did happen to not get taken, we will donate. More people need to be like you!

People are spoiled. They have been fortunate to have never needed things and unable to get them. To look at what you do and criticize you for dumpster diving is very shortsighted on their part.
