All the major supermarkets have signed up with Olio, where volunteers collect food that has just expired that day. The items are put on the app for people to collect that day (up to midnight in some cases). The volunteer responsible for listing the foodstuffs can keep 10% of the "haul". The food is free. Sainsbury's has just signed up today... so they need more volunteers!

I help myself to cardboard and bubble wrap from our local Tesco shop. So long as you don’t dismantle a shelf set up. For the first 50 times I did ask an assistant and every time they said to take as much as I want. So I don’t even ask anymore. Hint the most interesting (smaller) boxes are in crates at the end of the cosmetics aisle. Have you seen the prices of boxes in WHSmiths!!!!

I used to work the waste bucket in a supermarket, basically it all gets wasted off the books all documented and thrown in the bin, if it went into the bin, we would turn a blind eye to bin raiders our gate was open until 10 if people came and took things. supermarkets cant give waste away, i used to do last reductions and knock everything down to 20p so it could be sold off and not turned into waste i got into trouble for doing this a few times but least the shop got something instead of wasting off more things that were just gonna end up in the bin. different rules per different store type though.. food waste is different to say electricals which george pointed out it should be put into a special pickup same with textiles as well.

Similar with me. I worked in a floral shop and I would lower the prices rather than toss out plants and flowers. My mgr said he didn't want the kind of customers that came in for discounted plants. I was advised to chuck them.

I am a charity shop manager and I have had a lot of experience with Dumpster Divers. Essentially the law is as follows: All business waste is the property of the business until it is collected by the waste management third party company so therefore anyone taking out of the bins unless given permission is stealing. The law currently states anyone can steal up to £200 worth of goods until it becomes a criminal offence otherwise if less than that amount it’s a civil offence. I would say 9/10 most shops and businesses don’t care. It became an issue for us as we would have items that someone could hurt themselves on in the bins so if someone got hurt it would make the charity liable. Even when we locked the bins people would still cut the padlocks. I don’t think police would deal with someone going through the bins unless it was dealt with at a government or corporate level between a business and the police as it’s such a small issue. As for the trespassing. It’s a civil matter regardless of having walls or gates so long as nothing was broken or tampered with to get into an area. However if the owner or management of the property ask you to leave the area and you don’t it’s classed as aggravated trespass which the police can and will arrest and prosecute. We never threw anything anyway unless it was truly broken and not sellable. We try to send items to other shops / charity’s that can sell items we can’t or redirect customers to those shops. I hate charity shops wasting good donations!

What law is it you're referring to in the first paragraph (stealing and being under £200)? I know the trespassing thing is not accurate because if you're climbing walls or opening locked gates, then you're breaking and entering. However, if a gate is open, then you have presumed right of access until notified otherwise (via a sign or the landlord telling you).
