Welcome back to the SYS podcast!
This week we are diving into the world of Dune 2, and why we believe it to be one of the greatest sci-fi stories ever told. Great story telling always boils down to one thing. "How are you able to connect with an audience?"
The magic of Dune is exactly that. It is a story filled with symbolism and metaphor to mirror our modern age. Dune is filled with political conflict, battles over commerce and resources, impacts of religion & technology, and so much more.
The movies are an absolute masterpiece. However, the world is so expansive and deep that they left a LOT of information out from the books. The purpose of this video is to fill that gap and give a better understanding of the dune world to have a greater appreciation for the film

Ive broken down Dune (im a hardcore longtime reader and fan) for several of my friends and they all had a eureka moment to how much more complex Dune is and its much more than a basic Sci Fi story.

The Bene Gesserit cant actually communicate telepathically. Their minds are so honed and sensitive to reading people that theyre basically able to communicate without words through analyzing body language and micro expressions, thats part of how their Voice power works too. Essentially theyre able to analyze a person so thoroughly that they can make a unique mental profile of that person and then modulate their voice and use vocabulary to craft sentences that bypass all of a persons mental defenses to register like commands. Just wanted to clear that up for you guys cause at the end when we got that telepathy scene between Lady Jessica and Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohaim I knew that was gonna confuse people who hadnt read the books. Also while there are no computers, society has created human computers to basically fill that role and theyre called Mentats. Theyre really advanced at doing math and predictions and scientific models. The light skinned black guy whose eyes turned white when thinking in the first movie was one of them, his name was Thufir Hawat but he got cut from the second movie. The mentats are more important in the books and Paul is trained as one which combined with his moms Bene Gesserit training, his dads political training, Gurneys war training, and the Fremen's training all combine to make him this powerful figure.

that’s also why Jessica was able to survive poisoning. Paul mentions this in the movie. Her mind is so connected to her body she can basically feel and direct every cell and she directs the poison out. 🤯🤯

@@kierad1794 yeah in the book they can also control the sex of their babies too because they have such high control over all their body's internal chemistry

Love you guys like aways! This made me think on the presence of AI in Dune: Alan Turing was the father of Computing and AI. He developed many of the concepts for AI back in 1948. So, Dune mentioning the fear of AI is not surprising, especially since a lot of fear for technology emerged after WW2.

I loved this movie so much. Ive read a bajillion SFF books and Dune is really impressive in some ways, but I also dislike a lot of stuff about the book. This movie was incredible and I think actually improves the book. I realllllly love how much they elevated Jessica and Chani in the movie. Jessica is way more evil and manipulative in this movie, and Chani is way more of a character and actually given some real autonomy. Cant wait for Villeneuve to adapt Dune Messiah and give us Dune 3. Also yeah Alia, his sister was supposed to be born in this movie. In the book she's born and seen as an abomination because she has an adult ancient mind. She is the one who actually kill baron harkonen as this creepy ass toddler.

“Digging into the lore made me understand the movie better” exactly, it’s so annoying that the movies fail to communicate the complexity of the world

If you are doing celebrity perfumes next, you have to talk about the Britney Spears ones because I know people (as unbelievable as it sounds) who only know her from her perfumes. Also they were huge among teenage girls circa 2010-2017

I’d love for you guys to make more book to film adaptation videos. When I started becoming a fan of films because of the hunger games I also would start to read the books they were adapted from which got me into reading. Haven’t read Dune but your summary of the story and what you explained really made me want to read them and also helped me understand things I missed in the film. If you do consider this you guys should do Ender’s Game next

I have seen a few channels point out that telepathy was used between the two Reverend Mothers. However, my wife is amazing at reading into non-verbal communications. So, I like to think of that moment is them staring each other down and them knowing what each other are thinking. The audience is just hearing their internal dialogue. Which could easily be interpreted as telepathy but, I like the idea of internal dialogue and them reading each other a bit more.

Great discussion and dive into the lore. There's a great interview on RU-vid: "Frank Herbert on the origins of Dune (1965)" where he digs into many the real world origins of Dune. Think you'll enjoy it.

Disagree strongly with how they portrayed Paul, Jessica, Chani, and Alia in this movie compared to the books. Paul was a little upset at the power given to him and the role he was given but he and his mother were partners (in everything). He stepped up and believed in using the power to better Arrakis and give a better life to everyone. I did not like the anti religious feel the movie gave off. Chani was always supportive and understood the decisions Paul had to make. The visions that Paul kept seeing were himself becoming a tyrant, not his mother or sister in the movie visions. It was frustrating seeing such a strong bonds in the book be complete opposite. One of the most refreshing things about the books was how Paul worked so well with his mother and the bond they shared. Also the ending of the book was so much more epic. The movie was fine as it was, but being a book purist, it was a difficult watch.
@kierad1794
@kierad1794 6 месяцев назад
yeah the timeline was more compressed. I was suprised at the way they turner Paul against Jessica, although there is a case to say that her image in the vision simply represents the bene gesserit plan. That was more my interpretation anyway.

I just watched the two of you dragging Austin Butler's Elvis and praising Jacob Elordi like your lives depended on it. lmao. Imagine praising a glorified halloween costume. Elvis was a musician. Jacob didn't sing. He just sat on a futon and mumbled in a slightly australian-inflected southern accent. Y'all just wanted to jump on a bandwagon of dragging Austin for taking his job seriously and your opinions mean nothing.

Great job! it’s refreshing to see someone that actually values wanting to know the larger themes of the books. Knowing about the details of the Dune universe without actually reading the books is difficult, one of the biggest underlying messages of the Dune universe is the ultimate creation of a mind able to bridge space and time without the use of computers. Paul is just the first step in this plan, but over the span of the books you see how this path continues.
