Dune, directed by David Lynch, is considered one of the world's biggest sci-fi flops but the story of it is way more interesting - and the movie itself more underrated - than it's given credit for. Here's why.

More About Dune: Dune is a 1984 American epic science fiction film written and directed by David Lynch, based on the 1965 Frank Herbert novel of the same name. The film stars Kyle MacLachlan as young nobleman Paul Atreides, and includes an ensemble of well-known American and European actors in supporting roles. It was filmed at the Churubusco Studios in Mexico City and included a soundtrack by the rock band Toto, as well as Brian Eno.

He had hair in I, Claudius. His performance, like most of that cast, was fantastic - one of the most spine-chilling villains ever. And Macro, the Praetorian who led the coup against him, was one of the first screen appearances of John Rhys-Davies. Also, Livia, my favorite character from the series, was played by Siân Phillips, who played Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam in this movie.

For years I had no idea that people didn't like Dune. I saw it and was all HOLY COW THIS IS AWESOME and fell in love and read the book and was just one happy little camper in this Dune universe. And then I found out people hated the film? I mean...yeah, the Harkonnens made me want to barf but dang that film was good. What's wrong with everyone?
@Unlitedsoul
@Unlitedsoul 6 лет назад
Could have something to do with the fact that the movie barely reflects the source material whatsoever. Could also have something to do with nonstop over-acting by a group of great stage and TV actors who were all virtual film novices and did not understand the nuances involved (and nearly all were miscast). Could be the senseless offshooting story arcs which mangle and convulute an already greatly complex story. The only thing the movie actually got right was the dynamic scenery, costumes, and effects. Everything else was pure trash. It's great that you enjoyed the film, and it managed to interest you in the Dune universe enough to at least read the first book. I'm not trying to take that away from you. For many of us, however, we expected more of an effort. Personally, I enjoyed the SyFy miniseries from 2000 a lot more than the movie. It, at least, told the actual story.

Dune has so many levels that it requires complete viewer commitment. It broke the mould of sci fi movies by being much more than humans fighting aliens. I don't think the range of accents hinder the film, if anything they add to the complex nature of Dune.

while the mini series was very true to the books in regards to the dialogue its casting set designs and costuming was VERY VERY poor. this was due in large part to the lack of a real budget. I LOVE the Dune novels as well as the first movie but the mini was disappointing.

The origin of fremen was actually the words free men as in the free men of dune. The Fremen were formerly budislamic slaves who fled to dune to escape slavery during the Butlerian jihad more than 10,000 years before the story of dune takes place.

Not only story, this is the greatest sci fi movie .... ever......Unfortunately it was not well received due to its rather realistic/futuristic look being rather bleak and it was also made for adults (no cute little Ewoks here) plus it is rather a bit complex for one movie, the extended versions being the best but too long for the Movie Theaters to show. The storyline itself was copied ('an inspiration') by George Lucas for Star Wars and Cameron for Avatar, in which the outsider becomes the savior.

it won't be the same. Lynch's vision will be very hard to beat. Also, the score played a huge part. My expectations are very low. I'm sure the special effect will be top notch but what Lynch did, blew away even Herbert. He said it himself in an interview that there were many things in Dune movie on point(exactly the way he envisioned it), some stuff he didn't agree with and some he actually liked better.

Even though I agree with you, coming from Villeneuve, I've slightly higher expectations for at least a decent movie and not a Fast and Furious Fremen Film. But you're totally right. The people who, to this day, complain about Dune really fail to understand David Lynch and his moviemaking in general.

I've got really mixed feelings about the prequel series. I actually enjoyed them overall, but I think this is mostly because of the thought-provoking universe envisioned and constructed by Frank Herbert. As far as Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson's literary treatment of what Frank Herbert outlined : it felt a bit dumbed down unfortunately. It's as if Frank Herbert created a gorgeously designed blueprint for a building, but the men who later tried to build were just beyond their depth in the execution of the plan. The Butlerian Jihad prequels succeed somewhat in spite of the flawed attempt to build on the solid foundation (just my opinion here of course). The interquels and later sequels concluding the series though...ugh. Whole other discussion...

The standout in Dune is the design. The sets are fantastic, particularly the palaces and so are many of the costumes. I understand the hatred towards the stillsuit design, but an accurate depiction would allow the actors to act.

I first saw Dune when it was released at my local cinema. I was not given that cheat-sheet you mentioned but maybe that was just a thing for American audiences? I really enjoyed Dune. I don't remember ever not understanding the dialogue or the plot. I liked how the plot was full of intrigue. I remember that there was an intermission at the point the assassins hunter seeker enters Paul's room. That was tense yet I had to wait for the lady with the ice creams to leave for it to continue! I enjoyed the story of Paul realising his destiny. The armies were impressive, the battles looked amazing. The Sardaukar shock-troops were awesome! But when we got the Fremen later, with the wierding modules, wow! I whole film was very well executed. The lavish and often weird looking sets was something very different for sci-fi movies. The idea that computers were not used, that there are human computers, this made me think deeply, as I was very much interested in computing. Anyway, I am rattling on, I should stop. I just wanted to write something to balance this point of view that it was too complex. At least there was one teenager in the 80s who enjoyed it. After seeing it I even read the book, which I enjoyed even more because it is much deeper. I loved the book for having a map of Dune and a glossary. Fantastic attention to detail by Frank Herbert. I think David Lynch did a great job, really I do.

There is the usual American bias here when saying how well a film/book/album/games console/other thing performed. My understanding is that Dune was the best performing film that year in several European countries. Maybe it was more attuned to European tastes. Personally, I knew nothing of Dune before (or indeed, since) seeing the film, but I remember large tracts of it to this day, and apart from some ropey 'worm' scenes, I look back with a certain fondness on it. Like Blade Runner, it's gone on to become a cult classic, so that must say something about it.

Michael Gerrard I hated the weirding modules. The Weirding Way in the books and the television adaptation was simply a mega martial art developed over the millenniums by the Bene Gesserit through their Other Memory ability-the combined ego and memories of all her female ancestors-passed on as genetic memory or passed on to other Reverend Mothers by physical contact at the time of death. Think of hundreds of thousands of years of knowledge coupled with their ability to simulflow coupled with the Prana-bindu physical training: that’s the Benefit Gesserit fighting style which was called the “weirding way” by the Fremen.

You can tell this guy never read the books! Maybe never read any books... Having read the DUNE trilogy 4 or 5 times before the movie was made, I followed it easily. Some effects weren't very good, but I thought it was great overall and still do think so. Roger Ebert, like many film goers, never read the book(s), so his "complex" script opinion is to be expected. The movie was a straight forward telling of the book. If only it hadn't bombed at the box office, Lynch would've made two more classics!
@THE-HammerMan

Bill Herschel DUNE(trilogy) books are VERY complex, when is one reason I love them so. True- paying close attention helps, as does multiple viewing. Ebert's no dummy, but reviews with the average movie goer in mind. Hence his "incomprehensible" tag, since most movie goers don't wish to be forced to pay such close attention that it takes away from being able to simply enjoy it. Many who read the book said it strayed from the book, or didn't show this or that! People do that for A LOT of movies- pick it apart, I mean- which I hate. All said, I think it's a classic. It ain't no BLADE RUNNER, but it's a fun watch!

Great review with some interesting details. I read the book as a kid and was blown away by the movie, it's actually my favourite film ever. I think it suffered from the same problem as Cloud Atlas though, trying to squeeze an epic into one standard length film; people can struggle to keep up and it may only appeal to those who already know the story. Unlike the many Stat Wars films who's very simple stories have appeal for the masses that don't want to go to the movies to think. Such a shame Jodorowsky never finished his - wasn't it going to be 15 hours long or something? Only thing that cheapens your video though is you've apparently not read the book or even watched the film, otherwise you'd know how to pronounce Fremen.

I have my pros and cons with each of these productions, so I hope the best lessons are learned from them all. The special effects, lighting, costumes, and sound mark what made these films technically brilliant. And they all had good international actors, which I deeply appreciated, since Dune is a universal story which should have a world-wide cast.

It wasn’t about being perplexed, or not understanding. GoT destroys that argument. And Star Wars and Star Trek destroy that argument. It was because the story wasn’t meant for a film. I loved the movie and books long ago. The worst thing about the movie tho was, as you mentioned, the disgusting baron and heart plugs, neither of which were in the books. One of the main aspects of the storyline was the underlying breeding program being implemented by the Bene Gesserit among the houses to create the Kwisatz Haderach. Which is why the Baron is actually Paul's grandfather and there were said to resemble one another.(all ignored in the movie)
@MsPunk1209

John Armstrong The prequel House Harkonnen talked about the plugs. But you are spot on, this was not in the "original" cannon. I never got why they focused on Thufir the poison and cat milking. Not imperative to the story in grand scheme of things. Maybe for the "freaky" factor?
