Dune - Extended/Alternate Ending

Another Dune video, and just like the worm summoned by Usul, it is a big one!
You won't find any rain here, in fact, you'll find the original ending Lynch shot that was nearly word-for-word from the book. Thufir's character gets closure, Paul fights Feyd, and finally takes Irulan as his wife to secure the throne. The music in some of these extended final scene was already present on the deleted scene, meaning Thufir's fate and "History will call us wives" were both sadly cut very late in post-production.
For all the flack Lynch gets on this movie, here's proof that he did indeed do his best to adapt things faithfully.

1.) *_Thufir Hawat, expanded_** ~* Some expanded context/explanation(s) for those less familiar with Dune (novel), and to understand about Thufir Hawat... - a.) (2:03) *_"Three generations of...you..."_** ~* Thufir Hawat had served House Atreides for *over ONE HUNDRED years* (and Hawat was not a young man when he started his service to House Atreides); from Paul's grandfather ("the Old Duke"), to Leto Atreides (Paul's father), and to Paul Atreides himself, with unquestionable loyalty, unswerving dedication, and unblemished honor. - b.) *_Mentats vs. Love_** ~* Mentats are supposed to (but not 'strictly' required to) hold themselves above (or apart from) _"simplistic"_ human emotions and desires that could/would distract them from their Role as advisors and intellectuals on the intergalactic political stage. Put another (simpler) way, _'Mentats were Star Trek Vulcans, before there were any Star Trek Vulcans.'_ *;)* - c.) *_Thufir Hawat & Love_** ~* Despite this (above) Mentat doctrine, Hawat deeply loved the Atreides family, loving Leto Atreides like a son and greatly respecting him as the Duke Atreides, and loving Paul Atreides both as family ("grandson") and for what Hawat believed could be a viable successor to his Atreides' Mentat legacy. For the last factor (Paul), Hawat knew his time/life was nearing its end, regardless of any Harkonnen plots _(over 100+ years, remember?),_ and had hoped to impart his Mentat training and secrets onto Paul, who exhibited Mentat-level mental skills and capability (Hawat not knowing of Paul's destiny as the Kwisatz Haderach). 2.) *_Deleted Scene(s)_** ~* I really wish they had included this in the film, watching Hawat's death in this (extended) scene (1:31) always makes my eyes moist with the emotional weight of its meaning _(Loyalty to the end)._ Hopefully someday we will get a Dune film that can fully express the deep *_Love_* and unbreakable *_Loyalty_* that House Atreides inspires. Thanks for uploading this, *Reid.* :)

This is, and always has been, one of the great Sci Fi movies. People that go on about it being a failure exhibit a failure of imagination themselves. The design is incredible and the desert scenes rivalled only by Laurence of Arabia in their sense of scale. It is also one of the most quotable films I have ever seen and, as a life long comic enthusiast, the scenes where various characters thoughts are heard always reminded me of the way thought bubbles are used in comics. I love it.

@Erik-vp5bm
@Erik-vp5bm 7 лет назад
I found it kind of hard to get immersed into the miniseries, there was quite a few things that could have been done better. Missing sound effects, especially during fights, cheap overall look and feel (too obviously filmed inside in a lot of scenes), and it looked like they had robbed an opera house for the costumes. Children of Dune is fantastic, though.
@TheRusty
@TheRusty 7 лет назад
For the budget Sci-Fi had to work with, the miniseries is amazing. I don't even mind the obvious painted sets, becuase it gives the series a stylistic look that actually comes out very nice. Children of Dune was better, in my opinion, granted, but the Dune series was still great - betterthan the snoozer David Lynch came up with. The problem with the Dune series, for me, was the re-usage of footage. Every fight scene in it is exactly hte same Harkonnan stooges going flying in front of a pyrotechnics blast. Surely htey had a little more in the budget they could have used? Second problem in both the series is the casting of Paul. Alec Newman is a fine actor, don't get me wrong.. .but Paul Atreides just isn't "bad boy from a boy band" material, which is how Paul came off in look and mannerism in the series. Well. Up until his "unwashed prophet" role.

Everything in his portrayal of the character became iconic for me though back then I knew nothing about Dune. New Paul from the recent trailer looks too hipster: the hair, his voice when he talks about fear being a mind killer, the way he walks. There is nothing royal about him compared to MacLachlan. I read Frank Herbert's "Dune" when I was 17. That was many moons ago. But it definitely left an impact. Herbert mastered the art of creating an alternate universe via science fiction. When the movie came out, my friends were completely befuddled. They had no idea what was going on. I had to explain things -- just as I had to explain much of what occurred in Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey." "Dune," like "2001" are things you need to digest rather slowly. Herbert introduces so many concepts that, heaped together in any movie, would seem incomprehensible and thus off-putting. I admired David Lynch's attempt, as I admired the SyFy channel's attempt to bring this alternate universe to screen. Both have good points and some bad, but they were earnest efforts. I think that the SyFy channel may have been more on target but less visually dramatic. And I liked how they thread in "Children of Dune." To do the story justice as a film would require probably eight hours for "Dune" alone. It's really that complicated.

Yeah, the SciFi channel mini-series was able to devote a lot more detail to the saga. I don't know what you mean by my "Demi God upbringing." Just watched a fan edit here on RU-vid that made it a 3 hour movie with some of most intelligent editing choices they couldve made. The result is a trippy but story driven visual epic that captures the feeling of book while still being its own amazing thing. The deleted scenes were readded with touched up audio and its just perfect. Like this is one of my favorite movies, it's up there with the 80s sci fi fantasy epics like Flash Gordon, Conan and Highlander. These films all have this strange colorful tone that you don't see anymore. But this edit honestly made the film far more approachable and complete as an art piece. Very complex and beautiful, the music is just perfect. They tried to make a Star Wars, they ended up making an artistic cult classic. This scene was one a my fave in the end, truly a perfect extra to put a bow on all the chaos up until now.

If you want to see a cut of the Lynch version a little bit closer to the book, even with the artistic liberties from the movie still in it, watch the 2012 Spicediver alternative cut. It brings the movie up to 3 hours & there is also a 4k-upscale version. Frank Herbert understood the nature of live-action adaptations, so he was alright with some of the changes, but probably not all of them. I believe he used an idea from the film in a later book, maybe something about the navigators. I only read the first Dune back in 1982 for a school book report. 04/21/24

@robwebnoid5763
@robwebnoid5763 Месяц назад
@@SheyD78 ... For me, the definitive take of the story is indeed the source material, i.e. the books, irregardless of the changes between different movie cuts. As I said, I read the book only once & that was 4 decades ago, heh. If you have already read the book & remember it, you will have to compare which of the 3-4 versions you saw against the book. I do not think I have seen every cut out there, both official & unofficial cuts. I probably saw the TV version, made by Universal Pictures without Lynch & thus that TV cut was despised by Lynch, but I saw that back in the 80's so I have forgotten it. The recent aforementioned Spicediver cut made a decade ago is fan-made but many fans have agreed that it is really good. There was another fan-made edit except this time it was cut as supposedly how Lynch may have wanted the movie & not how it aligns to the book, & that one I have not seen. So for me right now, the Spicediver cut is the definitive one, even if I don't fully remember the story at the source. From what I have read, Frank Herbert used an artistic liberty in the Lynch adaptation that he used in writing a later book, perhaps for Chapterhouse Dune, idk. I have only read the first book. So as you can see, sometimes there is serendipity & a happy accident that comes from these things, because in the grand scheme, it's all just a made-up story anyway. 04/22/24

I've always thought "history will call us wives" as a tremendously subversive close to the first novel. It suggests, and is fulfilled by Chapterhouse, that in the Dune universe, the true seat of long term power is held by the women. A wonderful dichotomy of female order and creation (the Bene Gesserit), progressing the human race by means of male chaos and destruction (Paul, Leto, Duncan). A kind of ying-yang. Excellent stuff.

One that cut no corners, and lived up to the potential of the book and lasted as long as it needed to be to fully and accurately translate the story to the screen, and to keep it just as visually 'fantastic' as this one was to me as a child when I first saw it. I'd also maybe fund Neuromancer so that it can finally be brought to the big screen also. I think it's about time, "we have the technology" to make the effects, plus I'm getting old.

I was 9 and had read the book before seeing it from my dads collection. I thought the movie was great and it just blew me away back than. Which is odd cause later I watched it grown up and thought it was kinda slow. She was so creepy though.

This was the ending in the novel, somewhat anticlimactic in the sense that it paved the way for the sequels. However, the final film ending is way more epic and appropriate to a stand alone movie.

The ending to the film is terrible

@@jamesthomas8645 Yeah. The rain would kill all the worms which mean the spice is gone, and that will cause complete chaos. Everyone addicted to the spice would die too so Paul basically doomed all the Fremen and himself lol.

@@alecwigan7629 If I recall correctly, the rain was only in a specific region. No longer would the Fremen lack the abundance of water, but more than half of Arrakis would still be dunes filled with worms. So spice production is still possible.

I loved the little Easter eggs from the book lynch put in from the book, like how jamisons sons were always included in the teaching. Brilliant

Hell yeah. They BUTCHERED this amazing adaptation of the greatest scifi novel ever written with the cuts they made. Thufir Hawat just disappears in the TC....the Extended cut is a MUCH better movie and mainly because of the two minute scene where you see how much Paul loves those that loyally served House Atreides. Must have been a HARKONNEN among the producers and editors.

The 2000 tv miniseries kept that line. It was in many ways closer to the books.

Maybe my favourite movie of all time. Shame David Lynches full version was cut to just over 2 hours. Wonderful sets, wonderful music, wonderful acting.

Considering that Irulian is the one who keeps Paul's children from being murdered by his sister in the other books I'd say she did a good job
