The Emperor's allies House Harkonnen under the leadership of the Baron and Feyd also arrive to fight the Fremen. Little does the Emperor or the Harkonnens know that Paul has combined the forces of Northern and Southern Arrakis who believe that Paul is the Lisan Al-Gaib, the messiah who will lead the Fremen to paradise

I mean, the Sardaukar got the floor wiped in their blood in this battle, but the fact that they got back into formation and stood ground after literally getting nuked is impressive.
@studentjohn
@studentjohn 19 дней назад
They also look like their first instinct is to stand their ground even against the worms, and they hesitate for a few moments - until it dawns on them their deaths wouldn't even slow the worms down - before running. Which, to my mind, shows these are really dedicated and ballsy fighters. They are touted as being a superbly trained and disciplined infantry force, and they _do_ show it repeatedly, including here. But that doesn't change that they are 'just' infantry, they've been taken by surprise, and they are being charged by a... er... mega-worm-cavalry?.... which they can't even scratch, backed by a force of ready-to-die fanatics that outnumbers them. Even great discipline has limits, and their training would, in this situation, have told them that running and trying to survive - and maybe selling their lives in some actually meaningful way later - was in fact the best thing they could do.

They were not nuked. It is expressly forbidden to use House atomics against any members of the Landsraad. The only reason Paul got away with this is because he aimed his at the shield wall and made sure nobody died from the atomics themselves.

Super cool, amazing movies, but in the books if a sandworm ingests the water of one human it's enough to kill them.
@scionofdorn9101
@scionofdorn9101 23 дня назад
@@grizzlyunicorn76Indeed, but the gullets of full-grown sand worms are basically massive blast furnaces that evaporate the water and dilute it with sand and mineral content. More to the point, it’s a matter of toxicity, volume vs scale, a handful of humans are not toxic enough (not enough water volume) to kill a massive adult or elder worm. Juvenile sand worms are killed to harvest the Water of Life by fully submerging them, so there’s definitely a breakpoint point where water becomes toxic at a high enough volume. Tossing an adult worm in an ocean, for instance, would surely kill it. For instance, WE eat many things that at high enough doses would be toxic to us, but at low doses we don’t even notice, or just get an upset stomach if we’re particularly sensitive to something. For instance, two teaspoons of nutmeg can be hazardous to a human, but less than that is just a common nutty flavored spice. Too much cinnamon can be toxic as well (ironic since Spice is said to smell and taste a bit like cinnamon). Taking a couple acetaminophen won’t harm you and can relieve pain. Take too much in one day or one dose, and you can suffer serious, even fatal, liver damage. So yeah, might be some worms with upset stomachs after the battle, but few if any fatalities. Funny though that the Fremen ride their gods to the point of exhaustion, poison and kill their young for a ritual toxin, and micro-dose them with water using them as weapons. Not the nicest ways to worship your godly avatars. 😆

That standard bearer (the man carrying the flag) must have felt truly blessed going into Arakeen like that. Think about it: he is carrying the banner of the Lisan al Giab, a hawk motif (hawks being one of the only non-Arakkis lifeforms that can survive there), following the man who trained Mua'duib how to fight! If that wasn't enough, he was there when Gurney Halleck fought and easily defeated the Beast Rabban in single combat! If that standard banner were a Southerner that moment might have been the dream of his ancestors and here he is, fulfilling that dream of freeing Arakkis under the watchful eye of the Lisan al Giab. Devotion like that is a powerful weapon if wielded correctly. It's no wonder then that the Harkonnen never stood a chance.

And also later when Gurney is fighting through the harkonen soldiers, the flag bearer is closely behind him, following his every steps while keeping the flag high and in front. Also worth mentioning that being the flag bearer is usually one of the strongest warriors among the army and it's one of the highest honors to be one, this battle must have already been paradise to that fremen warrior.

The reason the Baron didn't know was because there are no satellites over Arrakis, this is said in the first film. The only way the Baron would ever know is if they sent troops to the South itself but they can't because their aircraft can't cross the storms (only the worms can), so they're literally blind and as you say they basically assume there's hardly any life in the South

Movie studios always underreport production budgets and don't report marketing or ancillaries budgets specifically for the purpose of making movies appear more profitable. Also the international returns are typically 40% not anywhere near 50% and DUNC made 430 million internationally (the bulk of it's returns). So this was the absolute best case scenario. Realistically DUNC Part Deux made 43 million. Also Warner Bros is over 50 BILLION in debt so it really doesn't matter if any of their films make a profit anymore. The studio will be bankrupt and selling off assets in a few years. So when you don't see future DUNC films you know why. Later negros.

The irony of the Sardaukar is that they're absolutely the elite... in conventional warfare. Conventional warfare in Dune requires shields and close combat weaponry, with the killing blow being slowed down to pierce the shield. Shields can't be used on Arrakis due to the worms being drawn to them. Thus, these experts in shielded melee combat are completely incapable of dealing with foes who are used to unshielded combat in the desert. This is why the Emperor had to be lured to Arrakis: On their home ground where they could use standard tactics, the Sardaukar would win, just like when they stormed the Atreides estate. It was only by bringing them out in the desert where all of their advantages were neutralized could the Fremen win. Striking where your enemy is weakest and you are strongest is the most fundamental principles of strategic warfare, and Paul was taught very well by his mentors.

The shield wall is more of a long term tactical decision, obviously it's going to draw everyone's attention to the that side of the basin, yes it allows worm riders through, and the rocks kill a great many people, but the rend of the shield wall returns control back to the fremen. Without it, the entire plateau is susceptible to both worms and Coriolis storms, neither of which are an obstacle to fremen, and devastating to all off-worlders in the cities and villages

My point was ambushing someone doesnt really reflect their combat skills as shown by house harkonnen but i also don't think the Sardaukar would've beaten the Fremen in the long run no matter what, cause frank has established them as superior which is a canon fact but i'd like to think it would've been a tad more interesting in lore and on the big screen if the Sardaukar where given a more symmetrical approach in warfare, im convinced the campaign would've dragged significantly for paul

Too much CGI for my liking. What I liked with Dune 1 was that they didn't overdo the special effects, and much was also done as real filming. Also silly scenes like the one with Paul walking in front of a huge line of Fremen.. Why would Paul be walking all alone and so much in front? And why are the Fremen running behind him? Makes no sense from a tactical point of view, even if he did start his walk long before them. Also why are the worms making a sound as they appear to the Sardukar, and why are they "jumping" in that moment, as to just riding on the ground like you'd expect them to do, having moved above the surface for quite some time. Also would the Fremen really be able to perfectly time a whole unit of worms to ride and attack at about the same time? Too many things make this scene feel very unrealistic "Holywood show" to me.
