He wasn't exactly the book emperor. Book emperor feared Leto because he (1) was popular for exactly the character being portrayed in this scene, and (2) he was putting together an army that was within a hair of being as competent and effective as the Sardaukar using the talents of Duncan Idaho and Gurney Halleck to train them. Reconciling book emperor to movie emperor, at the end, the emperor spouted BS to goad Paul into an ill-advised duel hoping to end him that way. He didn't genuinely think Leto was weak.

It was such a refreshing line too. I feel like in most movies in relationships like these the father forces something unto the child the child does not want and the filmmakers try to create drama out of it, but in Dune it's just a wholesome moment.

I'm not sure how I feel about his relationship with his mother though, I believe she loves him, but she has torn loyalties to her people that I wonder if it came down to it, whether she'd be able to choose being a mother over them. I don't know, just get Teresa vibes from her, like she wants to support the hero, but differing priorities could lead to a betrayal. (Please don't spoil it for me, I haven't read the books, so I know nothing at this point.)

@@r-giireactions2235the book plays this mother-son dynamic pretty heavily and idk how Villeneuve played it out in the movie but 8’m excited to see how it goes. Jessica’s motives and behaviour is much more nebulous in the books. Same with Leto but the movie protrays a more loving family dynamic.
@reidmackenzie7287

Leto always respected Paul and was very proud of how he grew and this can be seen more in depth in the books by Leto's inner thoughts and interactions with Paul. An Example of which can be when they're hosting a dinner for some of the important people of Arrakis and Paul debates with a few of them, and they dismiss his thoughts simply because he's a child but Leto supports him by telling them to not consider Paul a child. And subsequently Leto has to leave and immediately has Paul take over for him as host. The scene is much more in depth with different things happening and sets the tone for a lot of different things and gives context towards the plot which is why it's a shame Villeneuve left it out of the movie, but I understand why he did too.

I love love love that beat that Leto puts in after 'if your answer is no'- the look on Pauls face is one of slight apprehension, as if his father is about to tell him that if he doesn't become a leader than something bad will happen. But then its a statement of unconditional love and support, and you can see such a subtle change in Pauls face to one of surprise...

@@HyunaTheHyena Oh nonono.. I would totally disagree. These scenes had to be added BECAUSE the movie format cannot contain everything going on in the omniscient perspective we the reader are presented with in Frank Herbert's Dune, where every of the character's thoughts are words on a page, and not necessarily said out loud. VERY hard to adapt that into a movie format without taking up a lot of time. Characters like backdrops? I dont even know if we're talking about the same Dune lol.
@pwnwin
@pwnwin 6 месяцев назад
@@justincruz8050 if that's the case, it's an iffy addition at best in that regard. Leto knew what he was doing. He knew Arrakis was a trap, but he was not given a choice and formulated his strategy with "desert power" instead. A plan that would only come into fruitation sadly after his own passing. This is a man with great foresight. He did not expect however, the emperor to send Sardaukar to aid the Harkonnen in their risky attack on Arrakis, an unprecedented move in the power balance of the known universe. Nobody thought the Atreides weak. The emperor had to secretly shatter them especially because they were getting too strong.

@@pwnwin I am not implying that Leto was actually weak or actually naive, but that other characters assumed this of him. In the end, it was the only way for the Fremen and himself to win based on the clear vision he saw later. It was identical to Dr Strange's Infinity War' "one timeline' moment. I would argue what Paul did in the second film is what what Leto said here "a great man doesn't seek to lead. He is called to it and he answers". That's exactly what happened. Some of the Fremen kept insisting he is the Lisan Al Gaib and he resisted it and even got mad at his mom in that one scene for further spreading the propoganda that he is the messiah. And he later said to Gurney "they used to be friends, now they are followers" cos Gurney scolded him for not exploring the Fremen further. Paul is called to lead even though he doesn't want to. He resisted as much as he could but took it because there was no other option that didn't involve the Fremen and him losing. The only other option was for the Harkonnen/Carinos to win.

I was on the fence about watching Dune and this getting recommended to me was what finally convinced me to watch it. Just in time to catch part 2 in theaters too.

The genius of that scene lies in foreshadowing. Read between the words. The past - old duke, having price and hubris to try wrestling with the bull. He failed good duties and his family. The prezent Duke Leto is reminding hisson about duties while himself taking the Harkonnens and the emperors trap believings he can win. The future choice of Paul...well... Hats of to Mr Villeneuve.

Timmy's Paul is not 15 like in the book, he's more like 18-20. Jessica was a mother young and Leto was a bit older than her (he's 50 in the book, while in the movie he's probably early-mid 40s, and she's probably late 30s maybe 40)

If you think this heartwarming wait until read the book version… their relationship as father and son will make you bawl your eyes off by the end of the first book. This literally was a spiritual bond between them in which both felt their presence in different places.

I think a major reason why I can’t stand many major movies nowadays, especially Superhero movies, is because of the death of sincerity. At every Avenue possible they crack a joke or start laughing etc. and basically take out the sincerity of that moment. Imagine Paul had made some dumb self aware joke after his father said this to him. It would absolutely ruin this scene. I think it’s because marvel started with it and got very successful and everyone tried to copy it.

Leto was one of the best pilots when he used to be with the Resistance fighting against the First Order but spice running was too lucrative so he went back to his roots to help run the family business.

I love how this movie portrays a loving and respectful relationship between Paul and his father. In this scene, his father is gentle and understanding. Later, when Paul almost dies because he gets a vision during the rescue of the spice harvesting crew, Leto is stern and makes sure Paul knows he messed up; and Paul’s reaction is “Yes, sir. It won’t happen again.” Which shows a healthy respect for his father.
