We assemble, paint, and weather this beautiful 1/72 scale Harkonnen Ornithopter from Dune! Made by Meng models, this snap-fit kit comes together just as nicely as Gunpla, and it's the perfect opportunity to try and show Tamiya's Weathering Master powders to make this model look like it belongs on the desert planet Arrakis!

You've come so far since some of your earlier painting and weathering attempts, this looks excellent, hanging around with Adam and Kayte has definitely paid off.

The forward areas would be sandblasted to show more metal due to direction of flight and the back side of surfaces would have build up. Link the back of a car after driving a dusty road. You've done it the opposite. It's amazing work regardless.

I was thinking for myself I also would have focused more on which areas are in contact with the environment stagnantly, like the landing gear, for more heavy grime accumulation. Whereas areas that would be in movement, like the ornithopters wings, particularly the tips, would be regularly cleaned and maintained. The contrast is what matters though, like you said, even though Norm approach this differently than we would it still looks good in its own right. The difficulty would come if you had multiple pieces, without a coherent vision of what should wear and accumulate.

I've often wondered if someday we could actually build for real something like this.
@Red0Leader
@Red0Leader 7 часов назад
Probably not. The forces needed to accelerate and decelerate the wings as they move back and forth don't scale up very well and start to break as you get bigger than small models. Theoretically some magical space age super material could be strong enough but the helicopter design is right there and will always be more reliable so why not just build those.
@thetimelapsesketchbook.9088
@thetimelapsesketchbook.9088 7 часов назад
@@Red0Leader Maybe we will someday have space age materials in the future. Got to try diffderent things even if they dont work. Nothing is learned that way, no harm in trying.

Meganeuropis Dragonfly had 1 meter wingspan. But It did not buzz like housefly, doing just few strokes per second. It was able to fly only because the atmosphere at that time contained more oxygen than the present 20%.
@DiaTryma
@DiaTryma 5 часов назад
Research on flapping wing mechanisms is being done rigorously though. Knew people at university who were studying the airflow and lift characteristics for a theoretically strong enough design. While a viable commercial model is nowhere near, we haven't entirely discarded the possibility.
@germansnowman

I think miniatures should’ve been used for the ornithopters in the films, with CGI only being used for the blades, that would’ve looked incredible.

Would've loved a better look at the wash being applied. The time lapse isn't very helpful. Would much prefer that thing Adam does where he shows a few short, punctual clips that help me witness the action while still saving time. Appreciate the video! The paint job looks great!

Would be nice to add some heavy chipping on the front and blades, for the sandstorms can eat through space age metal.. also, no mud..whatsoever.. LOVE YOUR BUILD! Keep surprising us!
@seanmalloy7249
@seanmalloy7249 3 часа назад
If the 'thopters were part of the equipment the Atreides brought with them when they assumed control of Arrakis, they wouldn't have had time to become heavily chipped, even if you assume that protective finishes hadn't become any more durable in the interval between our time and theirs. One aspect that I think could be expanded on is that all of the gunmetal areas -- the landing gear, the weaponry, and the wings -- all disappear into blobs; going back in and detailing tonal variations, like shadows in the recesses and highlights on the upper edges, different shades of metal on different sections of the weapons, and panel shading (I'm sure you've seen bare-metal aircraft models where the builder has used different types of metallic paint to achieve subtle differences in tone between adjacent panels) on the wings. The weathering that he did was good (although with nothing fixing the weathering powders, he's not going to want to touch the model, lest they start coming off on his fingers, which makes a lot of the articulation useless), but it only touches the surface of what could be done.
@guilhermereis9520

@@seanmalloy7249 unrelated comment.. I kind of wished Spece Age civilizations would have some really cool material engeneering, and develop some very light but sturdy alloys... They had lots of shields and force fields going on, so who knows if plates or sturdy would even be a spec... Dune has such cool world building!!
@seanmalloy7249
@seanmalloy7249 7 минут назад
@@guilhermereis9520 I have to agree; materials science should have advanced along with everything else. Shields and force fields are all well and good, but they're all dependent on power sources. Now, you can handwave it by deciding that your energy weapons have advanced to the point where armor is effectively useless, but that's been the race with military equipment for centuries, and it's always been a seesaw, with offense and defense trading primacy. Take the shields from Dune; supposedly they make lasguns useless because of the reaction when the beam hits a shield, but if you have a missile designed to carry a single-shot lasgun projector, you could essentially be shooting tacnukes at enemy forces, potentially making shields for armies a liability.

I bought files to 3d print one of these out and got midway, but the ball joints for the wings really degrade fast, might have to get one of these kits instead. Was a great kit but yeah, abs like resin doesn't hold up to moving around. Also getting the windows was something I was working on, the best clear resin I found has printing issues. This one's way bigger which might be nice, though not much space to display stuff lol. Also finding a dust free spot to airbrush kinda sucks.
