Wish the '84 was made into two films. The pacing of the everything after Paul joins the fremen is too quick. The whole love story was done in a few lines of voice over.
I respectfully disagree friend. I don't think it's reasonable faithful. I think it's fraudulent and don't think it should be called Dune. They changed too much. Makes me very upset.
I agree, Villeneuve's Dune confirm that even if Lynch was greatly ostacolated with making his Dune he made a really great movie anyway! Lynch in fact is an extraordinary director and many scenes and moods inspired Denis...
@mdmatt2632 Some of the major changes are: 1. Alia (Paul's sister) is supposed to be born already, and she is the one who kills the Baron. 2. Paul and Chani have a child, Leto II, who is murdered by Harkonnen and is a major turning factor in Paul's decision. 3. Gurney almost kills Jessica because he thinks she is the traitor. 4. Feyd tries to cheat in the final duel with Paul. He is not honorable and should never have been depicted that way. 5. Chani loves and supports Paul, ALWAYS! She wouldn't be upset at the end when Paul married Irulan for the throne. Jessica was concubine, and so was Chani. Both love their men completely. 6. They almost completely left out the "weirding way" which is the fighting style that Paul and Jessica teach the Fremen. 7. Paul's prescience, his ability to see the future comes on gradually, first in dreams, then waking visions, until he takes the water of life and can literally see all possible futures and outcomes. This was highly nerfed in the films and not done well. 8. Entire political and social parties were completely left out. That's just some that come to mind. There are a lot more. So many characters were either changed, sidelined, or left out completely. It's a terrible shame. The syfy series was soon much better in terms of storyline. Yes Dune II is a beautiful big budget movie but they didn't do the storyline the justice it deserves.
@@TooMuchToCareAbout2having a CGI toddler flailing around killing Harkonnens wouldve looked really stupid. Denis made the right changes for the big screen
Dune 2 is definitely the best movie that’s gonna release all year. It was incredible. My eyes were glued to the screen the whole time and it felt like a thriller. Even when Paul gains more power, it feels like something bad is happening. The music is amazibg
It’s that good. I did not expect it. It’s just an amazing experience. Saw it in Dolby and watching it in IMAX next. I’m just in awe of what Denis V made.
I still have a soft spot for lynch 84, movie.... It was a mess....but with so much potential...visually stunning... and that soundtrack was outstanding....imo

I’ve read all the Dune books and I’m keenly aware of the significant changes they made from the source material, but the costumes and the cast of the Lynch Dune are just SO FRICKING GOOD (except for one or two). There still has never been a better Gaius Helen Mohiam. Or Duke Leto or Lady Jessica. When I imagine the world of Dune while reading the books the stylistic choices of ‘84 Dune still color my imagination. I STILL have not one wit of a problem with all the inner monologuing. It simply works for the film if you’ve read Hebert’s incredibly verbose writing style that includes tons of inner dialogue that only you the reader are aware of. The set construction and costumes comes from seemingly another age when there was little or no special effects and everything was painstakingly crafted by the most gifted of artisans. It just comes from another era. And yes I LOVE the new Dune films - FINALLY some real ornithopters. I love the depiction of that twisted human made into the form of a spider on Geide Prime. They should have really run with that as a punishment for a Harkonnen rival because that so fits the vindictive cruelty of the Harkonnens. Oh and yes, I pronounce it Har-KO-nen.
I disagree regarding '84. The costumes WERE fantastic, but they were not otherworldly in any way. It was very 80s space fashion inspired and many things were very "Earthly". But they were very well done.
The visual is understandable I think, but the art and the acting, is disappointing, I like the new dune after I watched the old one, that shows how superior the new version is
I disagree, especially in a setting that’s in a fucking desert. The worms would have been harder but doable and practically so. Something like Star Wars with laser battles and all that trash would have been far more difficult but also already achieved by that point. If you lean on technology to make a great movie then it’s probably not a great movie.
@@tomsnowden6201you don't realise how limited tech was in 84 and you're just yapping. It's cool, ignorance makes us say not so intelligent things sometimes.
I still think Sting is best cast for Feyd-Rautha, despite I don't really like the movies and the mini series. I still think Dune is unfilmable and still waiting to some director proving me wrong.
I liked the voice modules as a kid but when I grew up and read the book and understood what the weirding way really is I disliking the voice module stuff and a little sad they didn't represent it in the new one.
@Anthony-qj7qe to me, the only line I even remember out of this adaptation is when I, myself, said i WILL kill him. Even the dialogue is banal. Wtf did they do to this story?
@@TR-mg1eq You read the book! In facet I read the books after 84 one. How many of you read the books after the noew one! Carbon copying lines are not making the movie better! The new one is overrated! And it stole scenes from the 84 extended version. What? You cry for weirding way? Technicality. Overrated actors like Zendaya, Florence Poo and that wet cigarette man Timothy. At least you can picture Kyle Maclachlan to defeat Sting. Timothy couldn't defeat his own granny!
@@riveraharper8166 The ending in Lynch's version is one of the worst endings in cinema history. Paul IS NOT a messiah, he is a FAKE ONE, but in Lynch's version it happens to be that Paul is a REAL messiah, an entity choose him, it rains over Arrakis and the planet will become a green planet, which is the opposite of the meaning of the book's, Paul is the definition of a newborn tirant and Lynch makes him a real messiah? It's the worst idea and an insult for the original story. If you have any problem with the cast of the film is your problem.

Virginia Madsen was stunning in the original Dune. So was Sean Young. I am happy we have the 1984 version in 4K along with these superior new dune movies! Great time to be a dune fan!

Grew up watching the 1984 David Lynch adaptation & watching it led to me picking up the books. Love both the Lynch adaptation & the new films by Denis Villeneave. The Sci-Fi Channel miniseries adaptations also deserve recognition & love.
Into what exactly? Bland concept art, nothing more. If they were done 10 years ago, people would cry eww bad cgi, but now this is considered an artistic choice. The previous versions had zero budget, but at least they had vision and iconic, crazy designs and not just hue hue hue what about black clothes and white featureless faces? huehuehue that looks eeeevviill hahaha xD The movie isn't bad or boring, just absolutely bland and forgettable compared to the low budget, legit terrible 80s movie and TV shows. nobody will talk about this Dune in 5 years
@@Oswald-xy3tr No. And I absolutely hated the original film. But it is much more "it" and a statement. it has its own look, like Lord of the Rings has, like Star Wars has, Pirates of the Caribbean, nuDune has no character to itself. Upscale and redo with CGI some of the old movie's scenes, with the same look, just better quality, and it is much more interesting and iconic
@matejkamar325 Yeah We did. Virginias Dune intro alone is better Than anything what Florence can dish out. Flo voice is not a princess but a waitress after a shift Zendaya brought her 1 face: irritated bored cow face. Chalamet is sooo charismatic and intimidating that I question he can defeat her own granny ín a knife fight. Not tó mention feyd. While I like Brolin Patrick Stewart is just good ín every sci-fi. The only ones who brought a different and interesting approch are Ferguson and Skarsgard.
@@kanoreese1253 I respect it. I own it on physical and in digital on two different sites. But I view it more as a guilty pleasure. Villeneuve's adaptation for me is Herbert's world fully realised.
These comparisons make the 84 film look all the better. What I will say is at least their stillsuit discipline has improved, even if it is still shocking
It's a real shame that David Lynch's Dune was such a nightmare for him to make and i can appreciate both movies but the new Dune is just such a better experience!
Seldom does a re-make of such an iconic movie series overshadow the original. But this...THIS recent iteration of Dune was in the most literal sense, an unimaginable innovative improvement on all levels, from the original. It was for lack of a better word, "breathtaking." I cannot wait for part 3, to further re-write cinematic history!
incomparable to the original of course. Absolutely untouchable. But to add i really admire the deep effort and greatness put into the new franchise hats off
Just left the movies seeing part 2 in IMAX! Can i say the best movie out! Acting was amazing! Visuals was outstanding! Like i hope we don’t have to wait another 3 more years for part 3
The 1984 movie is more directly pulled from the book, even utilizing inner monologue which is no easy task ti translate into a movie. But I think the newer versions are more practical looking in design. The books are whacky as hell in environment but are very serious in tone. Both these movies are definitely products of their time and how sci-fi was viewed in that era.
It’s not a good take to use inner monologue. It’s a bad idea here bc they didn’t know how to represent ideas with the tools of visualization. That’s what is this movie about. Cinema is not a book. It’s picture in motion. So they have very different interpretations and tools for that. Lord of the Rings understands the assignment here. The new Dune movie too.
@@nazimelmardii disagree, the scenes of their inner thoughts as whispers are extremely powerful to me in a way i found the new movies lacking. The way you stare into the eyes of the actor and listen to their thoughts is amazing. Like when paul has his waking dream and speaks to his mother, and says she is pregnant with his sister. The way they did that scene in the new movie wasnt even close to promoting the same sense of mysticism and power from paul.
Sting in the role of the nasty , self confident villain was a the great example of a great game.. ❤❤ I like Oscar Isaak in the role of Leto , Rebecca Ferguson harmoniously fit into the role his wife Jessica.. 😊😊❤❤ Timothy showed his hero well , he is still young , impetuous , but extremely proud of his passing.. The viewer sees great potential end will not be deceived by further viewing.. ❤😊❤
The new guy had such little screen time and was so lame. Imagine complaining your opponent was weakened like in Gladiator. Sting was the perfect evil and sick minded harkkonens
@@lautarovazquez3193 yup from the sci-fi channel in the early 2000s. They did Dune, and another miniseries that covered Dune Messiah and Children of Dune.
Enjoyed the new version but wouldn't ever watch it a second time. I've watched the old version many many times, and will probably watch it again soon. Less spectacle, but fantastic story-telling.
The sound design of the thumper was better in the original. In fact I would say the thumper sound is the biggest miss in this new version. Everything else amazing. Would be interested to hear if others thought the same on this.
The 1984 version was really weird but it was the best. Because that's what made that movie. That weirdness that strange tone it had is what made the movie
I find myself watching the top half the most. Loved the book and I know it’s not a true adaptation but it has so many memorable moments and the cast did and amazing job with the characters. I like how what Lynch was able to achieve with the worms, the narration by Paul and other characters works well, the set design and feudalism look to things (flying through I giant doorway in space). Father, the sleeper has awakened. I loved this movie
Me too. I'm kind of fed up with everything looking so grey these days. It would be fine if there was different lighting based on location, but no. Every single location is all grey in big budget modern day films.
Villenueve stated, “I was very excited when I learned that the book would be brought to the screen. I remember watching the movie and being very mesmerized and impressed by how David Lynch approached it. I was destabilized by some of his choices. Yeah, David Lynch has a very strong identity as a filmmaker, of course, and it bled into the - it’s a fantastic interpretation of the book. But there were some choices that were made that was very far away from my sensibility. I remember watching the movie thinking to myself, ‘Someday, someone else will do it again in the future. It will happen.’ Because I didn’t feel that he captured some of the essence of, specifically, the Fremen culture - I felt that there was some things that were missing. That’s the nature of adaptation, you know?”
@@riveraharper8166Paul and Chani are that young in the book so idk what you expected. I haven’t been very impressed by their performances either but I’m just grateful that a decent adaptation is happening at all
Current Dune is now *MY* Dune. Most of the characters looks and portrayals match my original minds eye when first reading the books (particularly Chani and Stilgar), eith the exception of The Emporer (seemed too weak), and Paul - I sm still yet to see my vision of Paul.
@mannperson324 You just care about explosions and effects. The new Dune is a feast for the simple minded. The old Dune is too complicated for a modern audience with great casting, great acting, and great directing that you wouldn't be able to handle, as well as awesome effects for the time.

The SciFi series got the Harkonnens right: venal, corrupt and hedonistic like late stage Romans. In this version they're all Uncle Fester if he joined the Borg.
