I was worried it would be overhyped for me, because I didn’t love the first part. This movie blew me away on every level! It is a spectacle of effects, it is was enthralling with its story and characters, and developed this world even more. A masterclass in sci-fi filmmaking. I was floored. It also flew by for me as well, it was paced to near perfection. Great review! Keep making videos 👍

I think the omission of Leto II was sort of replaced by Feyd destroying Sietch Tabr. Although Paul didn’t literally lose any of his biological family, the people of the Sietch were arguably like a surrogate family to him, so it is still a loss to him. It also served as a catalyst to make him decide to take the Water of Life (since the book explanation of why he did so was also omitted).

What you said about more Islamic and Arabic actors -> I 100% agree. I hope that for Dune Messiah they will really go out and look for talented and up and coming actors of that background especially since we'll have many more factions introduced/expanded upon (Tlailaxu, Spacing Guild, more Bene Gesserit involvement, maybe even planets shown if they do a Jihad montage)

Agreed, very good opportunity to improve on that!

Ask someone who never read the book what a mentat is. Their answer is all you need to know in terms of how "faithful" and adaptation these movies are.

I disagree on this point, I think the function of a film adaptation is to communicate the overall story and some of the themes of the book. A 1:1 reproduction wouldn’t work because they’re strikingly different mediums. “Faithful”, to me, is more about the spirit of the story than its details.

Javier Bardem stole the show. Nice review!

SPOILER: The biggest change for me was i could not get over Alia not being there physically. I do understand the difficulty of it as that would entail a time jump, but in a sense they still did incorporate a minor time jump although it was more palatable. By voicing that qualm I think I am most upset that Denis just lost the “weirdness” that is Dune. Like Dune is just so freaking weird sometimes and we see that in the Harkonnens but we didn’t see it enough in Paul. Like Paul and Alia both went through Radiohead “im a freak… I’m a weirdo” moments.

I disagree, because what we got was *much* weirder in my opinion; Jessica was speaking to a sentient fetus for chunks of the film and at one point, Paul can ever hear her speak. What I like about his adaptations are that he keeps the spirit of Dune's bizarreness, but executes it all in a grounded way, so it feels natural within that world.

@@paul1720 yeah i did like the way he changed it in that way, still felt as though it if he continues on with the series I’m not sure how he will fare as they get stranger and i think he made it more palatable so idk how he’s gonna do Messiah and consequentially children of dune

SPOILER: Very minor change but I thought it was interesting they got rid of Harah. Makes me think there's going to be more changes RE the plot with the kids in the next movie as well. Paul having to take on Harah and her son is a subtle but important piece of him falling in love with/getting sucked into the Freman ways and temporarily shifting focus away from his 'destiny'. Great vid!

That’s definitely an important change!

BOOKS Spoiler: Don't worry about Leto II. Movie adaptation skips the first baby of Paul and Channi which is killed by the Harkonens, but Leto and Ganima appear in the second book Dune Messiah so they should appear in the 3rd movie. Unless Villeneuce decides otherwise.

I think they may skip Leto II The Elder

i loved the movies so much tht i’m currently reading Dune! funnily enough, i think seeing the movies first is helping me move through tht initial confusing stage where Herbert just throws you into the “lore” of the world. i’m just enamoured with his writing & all of the spiritual wisdom tht characters just casually drop in dialogue lol. my favorite thing about the story itself is tht it’s such a cautionary tale & it still applies all these years later. seeing Paul go down the path he does reminds me to keep my own morals in check lol. & it’s just a damn good story. pls keep making more Dune content & telling us what you love abt it!

Definitely can see that seeing the movies first would help to get past the initial world building in the book!

Movie was amazing! My only criticism is, where's the Spacing Guild?

They will most likely play a big part in Dune Messiah, due to a certain character. To be honest this movie didn't need them in it. Their little teaser appearance in Dune 1 was cool.

@@keelan3332agreed, I think their exclusion made the 2nd film more streamlined

I think they worked great in the book but for the movie I feel like they’ll work better as an entity in the 3rd film
