When I was reading the book, my sister said it was “a lot of people all trying their best and failing”. I really think that’s why it makes it such a compelling story. You see how much effort everyone is giving
And things will get worse I expect. Maybe I'm wrong but I think it is possible things will get darker in this movie series-not happier. Part of the problem may be basing galactic civilization on feudal society (which could get very bloody, unpredictable, and backstabbing) and a somewhat unspoken corporate monopoly but that could be me.
the effort was palpable, i could sense tension from the book-to-cinema conversion, but they did better than most book adaptations. They caught the spirit of the book

The Houses and the Padishah Empire are generally despotic. Duke Leto was an anomaly, and obviously killed for it. Humanity has devolved into monarchies, just across space. Paul is, indeed, sympathetic at first, but (at the end of the day) he still chooses power and going on a space jihad that kills billions. He becomes an even worse monster then those that ruled before him.
Yeah and those final scenes where Paul gives in to the prophecy and takes control was done so well. The sound of 'the voice' in the theatre played a monumental role in that final scene in the emprerors throne room.
I definitely was squirming in my seat. Despite having read the book and knowing the outcome, this movie still managed to make me wonder if Paul would survive. Well done!
It was "captivating", I haven't physically felt my heart pump in a film like that forever. When the credits rolled, people in the IMAX were stunned in silent appreciation of the complex and well defined story they had just seen. I don't remember a better composed film in the past 10 years. The last thing I saw in the cinema that left me as transfixed was when one didn't notice that Wolverines daughter hadn't spoken in about 20 minutes in Logan. Dune Part 2 was a tour de force.

I forget that there are younger people that have been subjected to CGI pumped superhero films for so long that many haven't seen a great new well crafted story come out in the cinema. We use to see this stuff way more often, but it has fallen so far that one being released now is like a shining ray of light. I still remember going to The Matrix and LOTR and just being blown away like this back in the day. Hopefully people take note.
Cultural marvelization is cancer of film-making. These young people who grew up on mindless CGIfests constantly overwhelming their brains with colorful stimuli are unable to appreciate something like Dune because a movie is bOrInG to them when stupid characters in ugly CGI costumes don´t make jokes every 10 minutes and there is not constant action for the sake of action.
So not this film then. There's the jarring performance of Christopher Walken being Christopher Walken. I mean it's not jarring seeing him be him in every other movie. But this film did not need him. Much respect Mr Walken, love you man, but in this film, not so much.
CGI is supposed to allow the filming of a movie that otherwise would have been impossible, but by no means it´s a replacement for a good story (or a great story in this case) It´s purpuse is to enhance the story and allow the visions of the director, set designers, etc to come forth. It seems to me that many, if not all blockbusters, use CGI as and end in itself, blow as many things as you can idea, and the results are obvious.
@@ParsUmbra I don't mind CGI at all if the designs are creative and well thought through. In Avatar 2 the CGI serves a very specific purpose: to intricately realize an alien world and all the life in it. But they also strove for absolute excellence, which also counts for a lot, and is why they won every single VFX award they were nominated in, 14 awards in total by the Visual Effects Society. If you pay attention to the way James Cameron shoots Pandora, he operates the camera as though he was in a real place, which is why you won't see those typical comic book movie scenes where all these weightless cameras are flying around a cacophony of CGI noise.

This is real cinema gold and why people need to go to the movies. Denis doesn't compromise and stays true to the source material whilst putting every effort in astonishing acting, visuals, music & storytelling. This is why I fell in love with movies.

I've read Dune by Frank Herbert and it was a space opera epic. Now wonder it was an inspiration for the original Star Wars Trilogy. I hope to read Dune Messiah and I hope it is adapted.
Yeah George Lucas even said that he used to read the books and that Dune was partly his inspiration for the planet Tattoine and his creation of the Jedi
For the sake of completeness, it would be nice to see all of them adapted. But...I have to say Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, and God Emperor absolutely depressed the hell out of me. TBH, I think the book cover art set the wrong tone for me...then the story...just didn't click. But I got back into it with Heretic... However, plenty of people love all of the books, so I'm the oddball.
Now that Everything Everywhere All at Once has broken that barrier that had forever kept sci-fi from the academy award for best picture it would be nice to see Dune 2 ride an army of sandworms through the ruins of that barrier next year.
I saw it last night. There were many scenes that were spine tingling. Like someone else here said, it was almost like a horror movie in parts but it was the horror of knowing the inevitably of what Paul would become. Timothee Chalmette was outstanding and Zendaya was perfect. She was totally believable in the role of a Feydakin warrior.
Chani spent the last 2 hours of the movie doing nothing but giving Paul the stink eye... It was unintentionally hilarious once you realise she must have spent ages beforehand practising 🙂. A great movie, but I'm not sure it'll be remembered in 5-10 years, except as they go further and further into the many many books in the Dune series written after the original author died to milk everything they can from the franchise when people remember the series started out good.
A female told me she thought Chani was a total mardy bum. I just think she was the one character who saw herself as a chess piece who had no play and no choice in the game. I really want to see her role in Dune Messiah and how she gets over this.
I remember Dave Bautista getting flak for voicing out his desire to play a more artistic role. He had the desire to do better things. The masses seem to have disliked the idea. Looks like he got his wish. 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
I really appreciated that this movie didn’t have any unnecessary sex scenes or nudity just sprinkled in for a wow factor like most movies in Hollywood. Even with Feyd Rautha, who we learn during the film is a psycho sexual weirdo who’s into torture and pain for pleasure, in the common trash movies we’re accustomed to from Hollywood these days they would have had a whole scene showing us him torturing and sexually abusing other characters but in this film it allows us to fill in the blanks and just imagine the horrors he could have committed based on the fear we’ve built of this character from seeing him in other scenes. This way the story stays on script to tell and show us what is actually important to know.
Agree, sex scenes or nudity is by far one of the cheapest ways to try and capture your audiences attention. Not having it, Dune will only help age the movie that much better.
I was reading Arthur C Clark and Isaac Asimov novels pretty much as soon as I hit my teens and have been addicted to sci-fi since. I read Dune when it was published, and it joined 'Foundation' in blowing my young mind. Way back then, the very idea that these series could actually be portrayed on screen was a wild fantasy. The last few years have seen those fantasies become reality way beyond anything I could have hoped for. When you consider that 'Foundation' was written over 80 years ago, and 'Dune' almost 60... you might begin to appreciate the extraordinary scope and vision of the true 'Golden Age' of Sci-Fi. I'm by no stretch religious... but I thank the Sky Lords for bringing the impossible to life before I pop my clogs

Same here! I love how much fun he was in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and then he's seriously nuanced and compelling in Blade Runner 2049 and Dune parts I and II. He has great acting instinct and screen presence.

I was also too young to see Empire and LOTR in the cinemas, so having such an awesome fantasy/sci-fi trilogy for this generation to call their own was great
I saw LOTRs in theatre when I was about 12. It blew me away. There was also an intermission, which helped everyone collect themselves mid way through. I wish Dune also had an intermission. Other than that, it was perfect. Happy you could enjoy a baddass blockbuster.
I love Hayden Christensen but... Imagine Austin Butler playing Anakin Skywalker, and young Vader in his early days between ep3 and 4. His intensity and ferocity in this role was what I imagined Vader was like after his fall to the dark side.
Terrific analysis. Just one little nit pick. Am old enough to have seen premier showings of The Godfather, Star Wars, Alien, Close Encounters of The Third Kind etc. When those movies first aired, the ubiquitous multiplex theaters had not yet been invented. Those movies were such huge successes that moviegoers in all kinds of weather literally stood in lines that extended for blocks hence the name “Blockbuster”. In fact many times the moviegoers had to wait in line through the length of time of a showing just to be able to get into the next showing. The term Blockbuster was used to describe successful movies and not used to describe movies that were not yet aired or were not yet proven successful by the appearance of the blockbuster lines of people. Actually it was an interesting time to be a moviegoer because as you stood in line it was only natural to strike up a conversation with people that were close by. To pass the time while standing in line people brought books, magazines and newspapers. Street artists and food venders pushing small carts or carrying wicker baskets provided snacks.
Lol, the good old days! I remember making a lot of friends while waiting in line to see a Star Wars/Empire double bill the weekend before Jedi premiered.
Do you mean people actually had to practice patience and self-assertion in consuming entertainment? That certainly explains why people are turning away from theaters in general because if there is no promise you'll at least have a fun time with a movie, there's no point in even putting the minimum amount of effort to leave your house.
Just came back from premiere in Czech Rep.. you could hear a hair drop on a floor, that´s how deep the atmosphere was, everybody was fascinated by what saw a heard ( the music and sound design is perfect ). Nobody even dared to try chew some fucking popcorn or anything... so powerful
Certain changes to Chani's character make me wonder what the future of the Atreides lineage will be like in this continuity. Let's just say given how ideologically charged her split with Paul is, Irulan might just have a chance this time round.
There's still a path to Messiah, and in a sense it makes Paul and Chani's relationship a bit more nuanced and deep. Chani at her core is a pragmatic Fremen warrior. Paul is an outsider - admirable and empathetic, but still: an outsider. And therein lay the key message of Dune: idealization of the hero is the path to ruin. Chani walks the line because to her, Paul is not just a Messiah, but a lover. A person. No matter his power or prescience, he's a human being to her.
I don't see any change possible to Chani being the (sole) mother of Paul's children. Ghanima and esp. Leto (II)'s story are the unavoidable conclusion of the main Atreides family arc. At least the arc that I think Villeneuve will be treating. I don't think he'd be personally interested in developing anything beyond Leto II's death as God Emperor and the fulfilment of the Golden Path. He may even stop at Paul's walking to his death in the desert and passing on the terrible fate of the Messiah that he himself wasn't capable of to his son. Chani is probably already pregnant at the end of Dune 2, but dies during the childbirth of the twins, so in terms of storyline there's nothing requiring her to be aligned with Paul in the time in between. There's still lots of potential for Villeneuve to play with Chani's character arc. With regard to the God Emperor part of the story, does anyone think the story would still work if Villeneuve gave the fate of fulfilling the Golden Path to Ghanima instead of Leto?
Also, this is how you make a diverse cast actually fit in the story lore and not make it feel like a check box being ticked. Kudos to the whole team, Dune is by far the LOTR of this time. I can't wait to watch it again and can't wait for the next movie.
The whole sage of Dune is about character study, Villeneuve expertly reflected that in the movie. It's not about the history of the houses. It's about what power can do to people.
Yeah, and my god, Paul‘s speech was something else (Haven’t heard the english version, but holy hell, the german Voice Actor went above and beyond. Like, in the heat of that moment, I would‘ve almost jumped up and joined his holy war.)
Having loved the books, I honestly think the change were all superb. A lot of the changes made it more obvious that Paul's jihad was...if not the worst possible future, at least a damaging one. That Jessica had engineered this in a way that was at least somewhat self-serving. That both are - if not entirely - Harkkonens. This came through with close reading in Dune, but had to be parsed. While the whole moral of, "Be careful about wishing for your messiah" was crystal clear in Dune 2. I also liked that Chani had a bigger role. Herbert clearly could write interesting female characters (I always liked Jessica and Irulan). But Chani was pretty dull in the books, IMO, while she lived in this adaption. So while there were changes (including fairly major ones), I think they were all for the best. A child Alia killing the Baron honesty didn't make as much sense as Paul. A kid who was born (and died) off screen was...maybe not a great addition. (RIP Leto II...) etc. etc.

Hollywood made it. Look how many big names are associated with it. There's bad shit and good shit, always has been. We just only remember the good. Before we had Netflix and Hulu we had Direct-to-DVD/VHS shit movies.
I like this in depth look, and how Dune Part Two has a flawed protagonist. When movies do this type of thing, it connects the audience better, as people are flawed, because no one is perfect. This film was absolutely amazing.
Nobody is perfect but we need protagonists who can inspire us to be better human beings. Not just be whatever makes us feel better as we relate to them being flawed. Paul in the book is flawed but he is still the hero of the story. We admire the way he tries to deal with difficulties within the context of what is right and wrong.
Interestingly the protagonist of the book wasn't 'flawed'. He grew and matured, but wasn't ever really flawed, or even more than bothered in a passing fashion by the most horrible of compromises and acceptance of the unacceptable. Everything became just theater for the role.
Aside from how well it's made, probably the #1 thing I love about this new Dune movie iteration is that even though it is scifi-fantasy, it takes itself much more seriously than the average "blockbuster" of this day and age. Dune is serious about telling an actually good story and making a good movie out of it, and succeeds. As for whether Dune will significantly change the movie industry, well, I'm not very sure about that, because the market for the "explosion-based" movies is there. And making great epic movies like Dune is inherently hard, lots of things need to come together for it to happen and succeed. But I think Dune will influence movies in a good way, at least.
Happy to hear Austin Butler’s performance as Feyd-Rautha getting compared to Heath Ledger’s take on the Joker. In the book, Feyd is an incredibly dangerous character - as much a product of Bene Gesserit breeding and top-level court intrigue as Paul himself, and a genuine threat. Among the reasons I hated the David Lynch / Dino de Laurentis Dune was that they had the perfect Feyd casting (Sting), but did NOTHING to flesh him out in the role. So looking forward to seeing the character done justice.
I didn’t love Zendaya in this role…I’m a huge Dune fan though. I actually appreciated the slight nod toward nuance in the older film adaptation. Zendaya can only pull one face- grumpy. She also looks adorable, like a permanent 13 year old girl, not a strong Fremen woman who is the only love of a Paul Atreides, Emperor, who has the daughter of the former Emperor as his choice of wife…might be an unpopular opinion, but Chani, to me, is nothing but WOMAN. Zendaya never seemed grown up in emotional range, maturity or physical appearance. Otherwise, I quite loved Dune 2. The worms. The unexpected warmth and the shared, good-natured humor of Stilgar’s revelations were so loved by the audience. I loved it. Yay! I felt like a kid watching something so well-constructed and truly loved by the people making it for the first time since LOTR.
One thing he left out-the importance if hood writing. Herbert’s novel is one of the greatest SF novels of all time, and fortunately the movie was pretty faithful to it, unlike the recent Foundation effort.

As someone who read the books a lot, I completely forgot the characters of this movie were actors. I didn't see Actors playing characters from the books, I saw the characters...
Like LOTR and the other greats, I think what we’re looking at here is a cast who genuinely cared about what they were involved in. The level of sheer hard work is there for all to see
Great point about Bautista’s performance! Everyone brought it, even in smaller roles. It makes MCU, Star Wars and DCU movies look childish. No vast CGI to ruin gorgeous cinematography. And you’re right. Ultimately, it’s a character study of everyone.
Denis Villenueve certainly enjoys working with Batista and had been able to help him tap into himself and bring out good performances. In an interview Batista said he was grateful to Denis for not type casting him like other directors.
Yeah, which IMO is for the best. She was one of the weakest characters, IMO, in the book. Jessica was wonderfully complex - a character who's at the mercy of powers beyond her, but also is willing to impose her own will on them. As is Irulan, as a person with a position assigned to her by fate and pressures on all sides, who attempts to create her own position within them. Chani is...just sort of a love interest. @@NinieneNah it doesn't work. Chani is supposed to be supportive of Paul. It's his story. She is about the greater good, not herself.Jessica may be complex but she is supportive of Paul also. Both those women are supposed to be all about Paul and the revolt. Not their own personal interests as Chani is in the movie. It takes away from her principles and strong character and attitude. In the movie she is weak because she is selfish. That's not Chani. Without Chani's support of Paul, we lose that special romance and bond that they are supposed to have. It changes the dynamic completely. There is no Leto II, which also bonds them. That's why Herbert wrote her like that among other reasons. You pull on a bit of fabric and the entire thing comes apart. Chani in the movie is not Chani and shouldn't have been changed. Whether you or I like it or not, Chani is written in the book a certain way for a reason. And Denis changing that changes the movie completely in a bad way. You mess with the dynamics between characters and you change important plot points that should not be changed. Huge mistake.
I didn't notice the effects in this movie as I watched it which is not to say I wasn't aware of the effects. Everything onscreen-the effects, the locations-the gorgeous cinematography-the amazing acting - was there to serve the story. And that is where my attention was riveted to; the story. Villeneuve's skill in using all of these tools to pull us in and keep us locked in is amazing. You can see on the screen how much he loves the material and this made me love it, too.
The movie is premiering in Korea and people are going crazy. IMAX theaters are completely sold out for weeks(even the late-night shows), and many already had seen the movie more than once. I'm a big fan of Star Wars I ~ VI and Matrix series, but I dare say this one beats them all by far. IMAX strongly recommended.
The scene where Paul goes into the council of elders and basicly defies all their traditions and tells them he is the one... a wave of sadness came over me that felt like it came straight from Chani's heart! I have read the novel and of course knew this was going to be his move, but the way the actors and the film portrayed it gave me the chills. It has been a long time since a moved did that to me! The visuals and the acting were superb.
Kudos to Bautista! Unlike other wrestlers who made or are trying to make the transition from wrestling to acting like John Cena, The Rock, and, to a much lesser extent, Hulk Hogan, he’s not just coasting on a big beefy screen presence. He’s genuinely honing his craft and taking risky roles. I doubt Dwayne “I have to put a clause in my movie contracts that I have to win” Johnson could play Glossu Rabban Harkonnen a tenth as well as Bautista did.
Let’s see what all you “fans” think when Dune Messiah is made into a movie. I predict it will be like when the book was published as it was not well received by fans. It got its kudos years later. Dune Messiah is where the themes actually begin.
@@viviantriana5146 He is definitely a genius as the way he did the ending. I liked that he showed that Paul's victory is gonna have consequences and how it will effect everyone. It was giving us a little prelude to the second book. It's just that the second book subverts and has so many twists in the story, I am not sure the audiences would be ready for it. However, Dune Messiah is a great book and since Villeneueve wants to end it at the second book. That ending of Part Two was a perfect setup. It's almost like he's telling to hate Paul as he went full on beast mode after the water of life.
Villeneuve it ramping up the intrigue in this film. Tonally the story is shifting towards something more cloak and dagger. The simple fact that that Villeneuve introduced so many important characters in this movie, regardless of when they were introduced in the source speaks to a planned shift from one story to an other. Add to this that this film really stress the terrible purpose of Paul as well as the his displeasure in taking up his mantle as Messiah. It does this to the point that it felt like it will be leading into a synergistic transition into Paul’s hating the role. I predict that Dune Messiah’s adaptation will pad out the first half with action before settling into something more akin to the book.
@@macmurfy2jka There isn't a lot of action in Dune Messiah. Between the two books Paul basically become a cross Michael Corleone and Adolf Hitler. At one point he practically bragged about it. Everything gets subverted in Dune Messiah and by the end Paul is broken in every way. When the book came out at first the fans of the first book didn't like. I gained it's due years after it came out.

The Question is - how many Dune movies will they make? I think that making a good movie of God Emperor of Dune would be a very severe challenge for even the very best of directors.
I’m dying to go to the movies and watch it. Someone said this type of movies are as good as the villain is. Heath Ledgers in The Dark Knight, Josh Brolin in Infinity war, Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back, Daniel Day Lewis in There will be Blood. I truly hope this is not the swan song, instead of a revival of the genre.

I saw the movie yesterday and Batista really suprised me in this movie. He really acted well and showed so much emotion and vulnerability with his expression as he never did before. And even though the movie is so long, it didn‘t feel that way and I would have happily watched 2 more hours. Best movie I have seen in a long time. Chapeau to all the people involved in the making of this movie. They did great.
Thank you for noting that personal interpretation is important for this film (and the Dune book by extension). This story has complex characters and plots going on, and while considering Herbert’s and Dennis’s intentions can be an insightful perspective, a completed work of art stands on its own and is subject to the interpretation of the reader/viewer. I´m gonna see Dune part 2 in a few days and you made me even more hyped then I already was. I´m especially looking forward to that psych0 Feyd and epic shai-hulud riding scenes. I rewatched part 1 to refresh my memories of the plot, and watching it and the non-spoiler video of yours I realized this is in it´s core everything Mando S3 was supposed to be but wasn´t because Felony sabotaged it. "A great man doesn´t seek leadership. He is called to it, and he answers." - Mando = Paul - various Mandalorian clans united under his leadership = House Atreides and their forces + the Fremen (including the subplot of "he is not a Mando/Fremen by blood) - Baron Harkonnen + his goons = Bo-Karen and her goons (I´m so proud of this insulting comparison :D ) - mythosaur = shai-hulud All good stories are basically the same story with different details and in different locations.
Lol, they don't hate it. Critics, directors, and actors in Hollywood alike are raving about this movie. Hollywood is profiting of this movie big time in a year that hasn't been doing that well so far. Yes, I hope it means we get more movies like this, but that framing is very disengenous.
Watched it yesterday in IMAX. Ultimate cinematic experience, there were so many moments my eyes got wet and i shivered because of what was happening on the screen. What a time to be alive to live through such a masterpiece!
While you have valid points - they are mostly due to the original book and how the director has done his best to be true to it, while being forced to leave a bunch of things out and change some. Paul is not a hero.
Great review and analysis. I watched it last night and was blown away. It was sci-fi epicness!! And I watched Empire Strikes Back in my childhood and Lord of The Rings in my late teens in the cinema. It's definitely on the same level.
If you read the book a couple times you'll pick up that Paul Atreides isn't actually a hero. Everyone in Dune is a villain, or perhaps merely human. Paul is just the most charismatic villain. Spoilers, for instance, on account of his ability to have total recall of every person he was ever related to after spice imersion he comiserates with genocidal ancestors such as Hitler, and comes to not care terribly much for most of his followers, viewing them as a means to an end. In subsequent books his heroism is torn down considerably, and he's made to seem a coward for lacking the will to do what was truly necessary.
Loved the movie, couldn't believe it was 2 hours and 46 minutes, when it ended I wondered, it couldn't be over. Your review was spot on. There were changes from the book of course but they worked to make the movie powerful and I had moments where I felt chills as well. A real tribute to Herbert's work.
If we don't like this movie, they beat us. A bad "Dune" adaptation. Yes it is really like that. As always. I've been thinking about this for years, why they couldn't adapt these novels to cinema. The reason is Hollywood laws. How's this movie? High budget, good music, good set design, costumes, cast (except Zendaya because Chani is not such a teenage feminist character) but a bad script. Again. It's normal to compare it to LOTR, but it's also ridiculous. Thanks to the CEO's of Hollywood, which has turned into a giant shipwreck, that is, the pirate captains who steal valuable works, a watchable movie is labeled as a masterpiece. This is Crazy. The designs of Hollywood clichés for the protagonist do not constitute a criterion for the success of adaptation. That's the problem, they take a work and rewrite it as they wish and write a different scenario. This was also done in this adaptation. Those who haven't read the books are unaware of anything because their references are at the top to LOTR or Nolan's Batman. Nonsense. LOTR and the Star Wars prequel also received criticism. Now, people like them are being sought everywhere. From where? Hollywood started making biographies of the protagonists (all superheroes) and forgot what society, sociology and cinema were. Who cares about Iron Man's depression? This way the fools would attract women into action movies, and they turned women into sexy men with vaginas. Everywhere became the college of the 80s. The modern United States and Hollywood culture are a truly disgusting thing, an empty thing. (This is why "woke" culture doesn't work. It would be better if the elite admitted that they are still racist and sexist, they wouldn't have to fight the whole world.) What is Dune? Get Lord of the Rings first. Add "A Song of Ice and Fire" on top of that, then multiply those two by three. You've now reached Dune. Dune also has fantasy elements, a mythological background (LOTR), and a lot of politics, intrigue and war. (A Song of Ice and Fire) The epic mythology of not only the past but also the future is written. They can't do this, they don't bother. They focus on making easy grosses with mediocre adaptations. Many changes were made in the adaptation that would spoil the essence of the story. Tens of movies have been shot for the MCU and DCU, as well as terrible adaptations of comic books. With budgets sufficient for a country. How should Dune be done? Part 1 attempt only aroused curiosity. It took 2 movies to finish the first book. In this case, more background could have been given in the first movie. If you think the audience will get bored, it will be longer. Or shoot 1 and 2 and put them in theaters together and sell tickets separately. Each subsequent volume requires at least two films or feature films exceeding 3 hours. Instead of doing this, go make huge investments in that stupid MCU/DCU. Make a movie of Thanos' IQ 5000 universal solution plans, or make a "new Star Wars" with no background or story. Then "why did we go bankrupt, why are we no longer loved, why is audience satisfaction decreasing?" think. Stupidity is free, after all. This movie could be good. But for mainstream Hollywood, which has always managed to make Dune the scariest adaptation before. Read Dune. Also check out the miniseries adaptations made for Syfy in 2000 and 2003(better scripted).
Hollywood has always compromised literature to narrative. This is an example of that. At least it's a return to that model instead of the recent tendency to completely sacrifice literature to narrative.

I don't think this is the best blockbuster of all times, but it is indeed a very good one. by far, the best adaptation of the Dune book ever filmed. When you think that Dune is 2 trilogies and those two movies only adapt the first book of the first trilogy, I naively dream of Villeneuve finishing the adaptation of the first trilogy with the same talented touch he is bringing to that world.
modern blockbusters have been less story and spectacle and more relatable and quirky, which is NOT a step in the right direction imo. this movie gave me the best cinema experience i've had to date, it was awesome.
Review of the "DUNE, Part II" film (2023). [My personal] (lots of spoilers here, I have warned you!) Immediately after watching the film, I was ready to give it 9 points out of 10. But when I moved away from the first impressions, I was ready to lower my rating to 7 points out of 10. So, in an amicable way, it was needed to create not a film of two parts of 2.5 hours each, but a full-fledged series (the only way to convey the content of the book in full). Due to limited time, the filmmakers had to omit many moments from the book, which affected the coherence of the story. Viewers who have not read the book have a hard time understanding where the characters in the episodes come from and what motivations drive them. Next, about the characters in the book: - Paul Atreides: pretty good. Played more well than poorly; - Lady Jessica Atreides-Harkonnen: I liked her image. No flaws. Once among the Fremen, she began to purposefully create an aura of mysticism around her son, Paul Atreides, and use her son in this game and the game of her Bene Gesserit “sisters”; - Alia Atreides: the younger and unborn sister of the protagonist Paul Atreides. She appears in a short episode, in visions of her brother. It will be interesting to see how her image will be shown in the next films; - Lady Margot Fenring: I also liked her image. I didn't see any flaws. Purposefully seduced Na-Baron Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen; - Baron Vladimir Harkonnen: well played by the Scandinavian actor (who played in "Chernobyl"). The image is good; - Na-Baron Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen: nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Shown as a sociopath, ready to kill even his own relatives, not to mention his servants. Constantly keeps his surroundings in fear. I think this is overkill. A boss cannot lead for long if he kills his subordinates/serfs every day; - Glossu Rabban-Harkonnen: another nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Portrayed by American wrestler Batista. Not bad. But again he loves to kill his subordinates at the slightest provocation. Behaves inappropriately. The leader will not last long with such behavior; - Chani: concubine (and actual wife) of the main character Paul Atreides. According to the book, Chani “knows her place” as a woman in Fremen society and teaches Paul the Fremen way of life. This is an adequate oriental woman according to the book. In the film, Chani is shown as a “strong and independent” woman of Eastern origin who does not believe in Paul as the prophet of Lisan-al-Ghaib, Chani walks gloomily for half of the film, after Paul’s experiments with the “water of life” she even raises her hand against him (slaps). This does not fit/correlate with the image of an Oriental woman. In general, if I were Paul Atreides, I would abandon and forget such a pseudo-“strong and independent” one. - Stilgar: leader (naib) of one of the Fremen tribes. The actor played well. Stilgar believes in Paul Atreides as a prophet and constantly seeks confirmation of his faith; - Shishakli: according to the book, this is a man, one of the best fighters in the guard of Paul-Muaddib Atreides. In the film, she is a young Oriental woman who is initially skeptical of Paul Atreides, but then fights alone and dies (she)roically in a skirmish with the soldiers of Na-Baron Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen; - Emperor Shaddam Corrino: shown as a calm, adequate old man. More good than bad. But, I still don’t understand why he allowed Vladimir, Feyd-Rauta and Glossu to speak discordantly and without permission at an audience with him. This is where the screen writers needed some work; - Princess Irulan Corrino: daughter of Emperor Shaddam Corrino, "sister" of the Bene Gesserit, will become the official wife of Paul Atreides. Irulan's portrayal is good; - Sardaukars: if in the first part of the film the Sardaukars gave the impression of disciplined warriors (the best in the Universe), then in the second part the Sardaukars do not make an impression. This is where the scry writers needed to improve. Also, it should be noted that the story of the main protagonist of the book "DUNE" very much resembles the story of the Arab prophet Muhammad - the loss of his father at an early age, support from a much older woman, flight to another tribe, gaining authority among foreigners, returning to his city and victory. Such stories are called "hero's journey" (according to storytelling). The film is worth watching. Better yet, read the book.
The fight scene at the end was terribly done. With all the training that Paul had during his time as a boy, then adult, plus the fact that he is the one, this fight lastly way too long. Paul should never had been touched, and instead wipe this other guy out within 5 seconds to show just how strong he is and that he is the one. I would of used his voice as an introduction to his next level of growth,. There way was awful.
They changed Chiani. Bad enough. I was mesmerised to the screen. Absolutely glued. Brilliantly brought the story to cinematic highs. That specific change was unnecessary. It does contain some of that Hollywood massaging…🤷🏼♂️
In the book Chani is simply a foil for Paul. That simply 'would not do' for today's media environment, right? Paul, in the book, had anger and regret, but not 'flaws'.

It had the same feel as Lawrence of Arabia: a flawed, enigmatic hero, great writing, directing and acting, a sense of vast spaces, and it looks like it was filmed at Wadi Rum. Hoping there are more like this to come.
I saw it yesterday. I thought it was great. I enjoyed it far more than part 1. Full disclosure: I haven't read any of the books and I fell asleep back in 1984 when the Lynch version came out in the theaters. That said, I'm interested now to go back and watch that one after learning all the differences between both of these and the books. My main disappointment in the first one was that most of my favorite actors were portraying characters that died and didn't make it to the second part but the actors who are in the second part were fantastic.
I loved the Dune books and Dune 2 was actually the start of a whole genre of games. I love how thew books really get into the lore components of the bene gesserit cult, and I never really saw how this could be achieved outside of a voice over narrator. Also I wasn't sure the movies would tolerate deep explanations and thoughts involved in the layers of the subcoincious it explores. However appart from that the Dune movies look like Dune, and the plot pretty much follows the book. As an engineer I have to roll my eyes a bit at the technology as it is represented but that is a minor gripe. I love this movie in that it is good enough for me to nit pick rather than outright puke on. I am sure I will watch it 10 times in my life.
Nah, Hollywood loves this movie, they're just making you think they don't so you'll rush to go watch it. It's literally just more Hollywood pandering and shitty writing. Anyone who's read the book would know this.

What I liked the most is that they proved a high-budget movie doesn't need to be dumbed down and filled with comic reliefs to be profitable. You can have a sober, serious story and a setting that is complex yet doesn't need characters explaining everything verbally to the audience or walls of text like Star Wars and still make bank
Such a breathe of fresh air. It was so good that I started reading the book just to see how it compares. Personally, I know a movie or a series is really good if I am compelled to read the book just to see what happens next. This was the same exact sht I did after watching the first season of Game of Thrones in 2011. Shogun is also queued up in my tablet once I'm done with Dune.
You really actually said Zendaya was the heart of the movie? Her character is not faithful to the book, her acting was bland at best, and her performance could have been deleted completely without hurting the movie.
The scale of this film is so large with so many characters in play that there is not as much room for deep character study. ‘Joker’ is a deep character study. ‘Dune’ doesn’t have time to be. Paul and Chani go for one nighttime walk in the desert and the next scene they’re falling in love, I got whiplash from it happening so fast. It goes from 0-100 bc we don’t have time and this story has a lot of moving parts.
I watched it a week ago in an IMAX theater in Guangzhou, China. The photography and the music and sound design was mind blowing. Kudos to all the amazing people and teams that made this movie possible. I would like to ask for anyone reading me, do you think there will be a third part of Dune?
Having seen both prior versions and read the book (I like the 2000 miniseries the best) it's a high quality movie and I enjoyed "interacting" with it, especially its shifts in tone and even different plot elements. But the miniseries took my breath away much more often.
If nothing else, this movie is the bar I will hold CG and VFX standards to (NO shade to Avatar 2 of course, but that movie had more than twice Dune 2’s budget); big blockbusters have no business looking as bad as they have recently, and this movie proves that a good director with a good eye and a good team can make a movie beautiful
Ever made? Bro, you can't be serious. Not on the same level as Lord of the Rings nor is it on the same level as Empire Strikes Back. It is entertaining, but NOT that entertaining. The legendary movies you WANT to watch repeatedly, I have watch LOTR movies dozens of times. SW dozens of times. Aliens, dozens of times. Original DUNE - dozens of times. Current DUNE is just a footnote. It is just so bland with bad pacing.
The Director treated us as thoughtful,thinking beings. I hate absolutely hate when movies use some character to explain stuff we could have figured out if given a chance with good filmmaking.
I felt like the first half of the movie was perfect, but after Paul became the Kwisatz Haderach it moved a bit too quickly. I would've welcomed a bit more dialogue between Paul and Chani then. Dune Part One: 10/10 Dune Part Two: 9.5/10
i hear you on this. however the projected complexities of paul and closely related characters were greatly manifested in their role- from a critics point of view dune part two is better. However honestly I loved part 1 more because of the steady world building, the mystery, and the passion of noble characters such as Duncan and the intricate breakdown of their personalities. i felt closer to the characters and the world of arrakis as a whole due to the way part 1 was made i hope that makes sense lol
The movie had EXCELLENT source material and the creators stayed as true to the material as absolutely possible. The actors fit their character, and told a strong story along the way.
They never get the worms right. The inside of the worm, seen with its mouth open, is not just a gaping cavern with wicked looking teeth. Deep inside, is fire. Not like a campfire's fire. It's the glow of something burning like a furnace, and the worm's breath is hot and spicy.
