Lord of the Rings takes a a very huge, omnescient view of Middle Earth. It is epic to have a God's eye view of a complete world, and see all moving parts and to see what it takes to accomplish monumental goals. Dune has a universe of epic scope (the most Epic imo, multiple planets and such), but chooses to hyper-focus on the one thing/peoples who controls the absolute functioning of humanity, the spice. It is the logistical, economic, philosophical, violent exploration of everything this spice touches and the ones who truely control it. I love me some LoTRs, but going hyper-detailed into the effects one thing has on the universe is beyond epic to me.
@craigmorrison4016

Essentially, Dune did for the Sci-Fi genre what LoTR did for the Fantasy genre. Completely revolutionized it, and its effects still be seen on those genres today.

@PeloquinDavid
@PeloquinDavid Год назад
Bang on: "That's not HOPE!" is the clearest signal yet that the film is going to presage the theme of how bitter the consequences of Paul's "ascent" will be for all concerned... Even the first Dune book (let alone the Lynch film) left readers with the impression that Paul was, in fact, the hero of the story rather than the tragic figure Herbert always intended him to be. To properly seal the deal, Villeneuve has to do not just the "Dune Messiah" adaptation but also that of "Children of Dune" (i.e. all the way to Paul's death and the legacy he'll end up leaving to his son...)
@galador8089
@galador8089 Год назад
I see your point but I personally think leaving it at dune messiah also works, and that is more realistic too
@mbe3404

I think Villeneuve did a good job of subtly hinting at the subversion of the trope. Lynch's Dune just dropped the subversion entirely and made Paul an actual messiah.
@FrenchCelt
@FrenchCelt Год назад
If you do Children, you have to do God Emperor. Otherwise you end up with the triumphant ending where Leto II becomes this unstoppable force, but none of the consequences of his 3,500 year tyrannical rule over the empire, brutally repressing all of humanity in the name of the Golden Path.
@PeloquinDavid
@PeloquinDavid Год назад
@@FrenchCelt I kind of thought the fact that Paul's cold feet in NOT taking the "Golden" Path - and effectively condemning his son to do the dirty deed instead, thereby sacrificing his humanity over thousands of years of atonement for the sins of the father - is the perfect cap to Paul's tragic arc. Since I can't imagine how anyone could make a commercial film out of the oh-so-philosophical "God Emperor", I imagined the filmmaker would simply end his adaptation of "Children" by showing a vision (which would have been both Pauls's and Leto II's) of the horrific future that awaited the latter during the lead-up to the events of "God Emperor" as a result of Paul's effective lack of courage in following through on the only survival path for humanity...

I have such high hopes that the opening scene is Paul 'giving water to the dead', shedding a tear at Jamis's unnecessary death. It's this moment when Paul truly becomes Fremen and accepted by the Fremen of Sietch Tabr as Usul leading to his eventual legendary status on Arrakis as Maud'Dib. (IMHO). And please include the joke about Chani holding Paul's newly acquired water rings for him. We'll see how well Denis does!
@KBTibbs
@KBTibbs Год назад
Honestly, the "I was a friend of Jamis" scene from the Dune (2021) was actually an improvement over the book, which is a rare achievement indeed. "Jamis taught me that when you kill... you pay for it. I wish I'd known Jamis better." is certainly poignant enough, but Paul is participating in the ritual and reflecting on how he doesn't like killing. The film interspersing spice visions where Jamis is *literally* Paul's companion and teacher for years and years means that now Paul isn't just participating in a ritual, he is genuinely mourning the loss of a dear friend. It's such a wonderful touch.

@@galador8089 From my perspective it is. I'm just bothered by the extreme wasted opportunity of these films and the bizarre fact that people are acting as if something special is happening. Probably the same people who thought this was a terrible season of THE MANDALORIAN (it wasn't)... speaking of which, in a world that has STAR WARS (on TV for God's sake) how is anyone impressed by this middling effort of creativity? My mind is just boggled.

I was worried I wouldn't understand the Dune cause I heard it's complicated. But I was enthralled and wasn't bored at all

@@JAIstarkillerkid That's true of most book adaptions. I've read books and the movie comes out and it doesn't compare at all. I know the feeling. Even Stephen King hates the adaptation of The Shining but it's considered great by most people.

@@Nay-kp6uu Most, but not all.... WATERSHIP DOWN is fabulous as a novel and movie (the original 1978 movie, not the BBC/Netflix show, which sucks.) I can point to almost every scene in DUNE and show how it is just WRONG. There should have been more emphasis placed on the Sardaukar and the significance of winning over the Fremen... the whole adaptation just misses all the dramatic points.

@@JAIstarkillerkid I'm just saying not all movie adaptations need to be completely faithful since most of the general audience hasn't read whatever source material it's based on. They're not made for the book readers, they're made for movie goers. Jurassic Park is completely different from the book but it is a classic movie. Blade Runner is a very loose adaptation as well from the literature.

@@Nay-kp6uu How faithful a film needs to (or should) be depends on what you want to achieve. I sat there thinking the whole time that nobody who hasn't read the book is going to know why this is happening or what this means... it makes me wonder how anyone who doesn't know the book was able to digest it. But the point about knowing the book and not accepting the film is this adaptation doesn't even approach achieving fulfillment of its artistic potential... in a world of modern cinema... especially one that has given us STAR WARS... I can't even comprehend why anyone is at all impressed by these films. The drama is weak. The atmosphere is weak. The scripting is watered down. The storytelling is abrupt. It's all wasted potential. I didn't even get the sense that it was grand. I saw it in IMAX and 3D and all I could think was that you would lose NOTHING by watching this on TV. The greatest strength of the prose of DUNE is its ability to evoke atmosphere and feelings, a presence of place... I got NO feelings from this film. And, it's not being different that is the problem as much as just getting the idea behind everything wrong is. The differences between the novel and film of JURASSIC PARK are minimal but also don't matter as much simply because the "essence" is still there. The movie also happens to be better than the book, which helps. JAWS takes a terrible novel and transforms it into one of the great American films. That's not happening here.

@@JAIstarkillerkid I respect your opinion bro. As someone who hasn't read the book I'm not on your level. My first experience with Dune was in 8th grade, 1999. My science teacher showed us the David Lynch version. I had no idea what was going on and couldn't comprehend anything. He skipped the part where the Baron kills the guy cause he didn't want us to see that, then flys around. since then I always had a morbid curiosity about what was so bad. I've watched the original and the recut of that I think I like it cause of nostalgia and I appreciate Lynch's effort even if it's bizarre. He also had us read Ender's Game which I couldn't get into.

Until this or maybe Dune: Messiah potentially surpasses it, Blade Runner 2049 is Denis' magnum opus to me. I'm completely open to having that change, but that's where I currently stand.
