I love Mark Strong & Travis Fimmel! And I was sooo pissed off about Raised by Wolves being canceled (don't get me started on THAT lol), so it's great seeing him make a return here. As always, your theories and reasoning fascinate me a lot and make me more excited, but when it comes to Fimmel's character, I doubt they already want to anticipate a Kwisatz Haderach before Paul's events, for me, his agent could be a Tleiaxu Face Dancer or someone from the Ixians.
Same here. It would be so nice to see how they interpret them. It may also actually influence or appear in any future Dune movies in a similar fashion/design. I think that's how the series is going to really shine.
It'd be a good strategy to let the tv show handles the world building, establishing all the different factions, so Denis's movies can focus on driving the plot, without having to so much explain the fish guy in a tank.
That was my problem with the movies, it made it a very simplistic plot, with none of the grey areas of the book, like why the sisterhood were doing what they did as well as the Guild and Emperor
@@robertmack5425- Yeah but the 2nd movie was already like 2 hrs & 45 mins, bro. How long do you think the studio is willing to let these movies be?! Never forget that this is a Warner Bros owned IP okay? You don't understand... They are the same company that forced the directors of several of their superhero movies (like the first Suicide Squad film, or the Snydercut stuff), to make cuts & chop them all up, in order to shorten the run time, so that the movies could have more showings in theaters, and they could make more money from them. And it all but DESTROYED those projects. That first Suicide Squad movie ended up looking just like an extended music video or something, by the time the studio was done interfering with it ffs... INSTEAD OF, the dark & gritty, R-rated action drama that it was supposed to be, with the Joker as the main villain. (And the Joker was a lot scarier, and more abusive & manupulative in the original concept of the film as well, btw) But the studio forced director David Ayer to cut ALL of that, and to totally change up the whole entire tone of the film, and turn it into a PG13 comedy, and have the Joker be a complete idiot, and shorten the run time... 🤦🏻♀️😒 and all of that was a disaster! AND, after all of the superhero movies that they had ruined would get bad reviews.... Warner Bros just sat back & allowed the public to blame the directors for all of the bad decisions that THEY had made. And the only reason that I am saying alllll of this, is to make the point that Warner Bros *WILL* ruin a project real f*cking quick, if they think a director is gonna make a movie too long & cost them too much money, or create something that they think the public won't "get" or won't be able to handle, etc. The last thing any of us should want, is for their "suits" to show up on the Dune movie sets, peeking over Denis' shoulder, telling him to cut this & that, or to change things. Denis HAS to make his movies within the time frame & budget they give him... or they'll start interfering. THAT is who he's dealing with. They've done this sh*t countless times already, and not just with their super hero movies either. They've done it with other franchises too, like the Mortal Kombat film for example. The first 15mins of that movie where you get Scorpion's backstory, and the movie looked so serious & grounded & beautiful?? Yeah well.... the whole entire movie was supposed to be like that. THAT was the Director's true vision for the film. But then Warner Bros showed up, said the movie was gonna be TOO LONG, cost them too much, and that it needed to be funnier, more light hearted & rated PG13, so that they could make more money. And that was that. And what we got was okayyy... but it was a shadow of what it COULD have been, had Warner Bros not stepped in to demand a shortened run time or that it be turned into a buddy comedy. WB is one of the worst studios in Hollywood to work for, and the only reason people still do, is because of the prestige of their name, but... they haven't been ran by competent, true visionaries, in YEARS. So I'm telling you... it's best if these Dune spin off shows do the bulk of the world building in the 8 to 10 episodes of time they'll be given, so that Denis can keep HIS projects as streamlined & on point as possible. Trust me. 😳 LMAO
I was impressed by the editing and structure of the trailer. Simultaneously revealing and cryptic which piqued my interest. As well, visually it's quite in line with the look and style of the movies. Production design is solid too. Really looking forward to see what Jihaae does with her character, the Reverend Mother 'Kasha Jinjo' in this. Jihae was amazing in 2 seasons of Nat'l Geographic's "Mars" limited series back in 2016 and 2018.
I think it looks really cool. Defo sold me more than the teaser trailers. Mark Strong looks like a G. I really want to see some pre-Butlerian Jihad tech, or a flashback of the war.
I always love the start of your videos because your voice is so distinctive, soothing, and makes me want to just settle in for a good relaxing & enlightening experience. In today's life that's a rare talent & experience so thank you! So have you been able to discern if the sisters will be relying on spice as their drug of choice to fail or pass candidates into full sisterhood status with other memory! If I recall the young sisterhood originally had to rely on another less refined drug from the jungles of Rossak and I think spice comes along later and was only used on Arrakis at first. I'm hoping that there really is 10K years worth of difference between daily life then & later to the time of Paul, after all look what progress 50 & 100 years has meant for our development here! If it's too much the same it would be as if stagnation was already in full bloom so soon after the rebellion against the thinking machines and the establishment of this new feudal world with many of the great families we know of from Dune already established or in their infancy, like the Corrino dynasty and the rise of the Guild and other specialty schools like the sword masters, Suk school, mentats, etc., develop over the 10K year So surely they will allow the details of daily living 10K yr earlier world be much different, as many daily living & technology development things are naturally extremely different in our own world in the span of 10K years or even 200!

The fact that they are aware of Arrakis and Sandworms in the show could signify some spice dealings and the use of that to unlock the Bene Gesserit abilities. You're absolutely right about the less refined drug from a certain flower if I recall. I just want this story to be able to breathe. I just love being in the world Frank Herbert created and I hope the series allows for what it would really feel like to live in those circumstances. I wonder if they can do that in 6 episodes. If each episode is an hour long I think it's possible.
@@secretsofdune The emperor says he's a "true believer" which may mean that the Travis Fimmel character is a Jihadist leader, and the power he claims is the loyalty of millions of Jihadists which is a threat to the emperor, and could also explain why he wants to destroy the blasphemous, computer-using Sisterhood. I know it's pure speculation, but it's fun...
I'm looking forward to this show, although anything based on the Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson books might be problematic. As their divergence and simplification of Herbert's plotlines were difficult to swallow at times. I just hope the show runners don't 'dumb down' Herbert's universe building, like introducing new characters that weren't in the books simply to use as exposition mouthpieces.
As usual, I am still a bit nervous about the performance of the show. On the other hand, I'm still going to watch it, mainly because of Tabu and Travis Fimmel. I just hope they don't kill Fimmel's character off immediately or after the ending episode. I feel like he's got potential.
Many are excited about anything the show may cover vis a vis the Guild, the Bene Tleilax, more of the Mentats and so forth, but I don't know how they could when Villeneuve who probably had minimal or no creative involvement may want to ignore or toss everything they do when he makes MESSIAH. I am cautiously optimistic about the show. Mainly I take Emily Watson's involvement as a tacit seal of approval (if not other cast members too - all seem like good to great choices).

7:41 part of me is kinda hoping it is the Butlerian, and i really hope that machine in the distance is like an early version of the stone burner, it would be sorta cool to see the early works of these machines like the highliner and the very sort that blinded Paul

Loved this dissection brother. I loved the new movies, and while i get that they ended up not doing the "banquet scene" (those who don´t know what i am talking about, see: length of dune pt1 pt2:) But i reaaaally thought they could have added an extra hour to the video for this. Joking of course, BUT it is one of the parts in the book (and the sci-fi tv show, which, please don´t hate me, i liked the game-cube level special effects based sc-fi channel series more than the first movie. becase i am a nerd) (fyi, not the cool type of nerd) While the houses being at each others throats is talked about frquently, the banquet is when we get first get some idea of the complex nature between the houses and how they manuever within the structures set by the emperor. Even if not all of factions are present (Sardukar are permabanned from banquets due to table manners). But those who are present, gives us an insight into how every house is basicly at a constant state of cold war level and would rain hell upon each other at first chance they would get. It´s all smiles and politeness and a simple gathering and platform for political & economical prospect, on the surface. In reality there is no trust, only fear, constant vigilance, spycraft and every single aspect down to etiquette and body language is hyper-analyzed by everyone present and indeed, not much is not what it seem to be. Everyone present is filling more than one role, not a single one is there for the reason they claim, agents, double-double agents and those who represent certain interests would never be so naive as only having triple agendas with whatever they do. Of course there is much more to your dissection of the trailer. But as you see above, if i even mentioned ONE of many things i loved with your take on the trailer, this would end up a poorly written, even less poorly worded, fricking graduate paperformat in the size of an old school two page middle section paper. For yours and humanity´s sake, i´ll save that for when i can blame that on, like, not being sober, claim memory loss from concussion after being hit by a truck (not cybertruck, that would kill A MAMMOTH! Hello, sharp edges = bad!) or having spent a day in "super mario mode" after eating...edible mushrooms. I want this show to be good, I really do.. but if they set the show to be 10k yrs before the movie, why they try sooooo hard to emulate every single thing visually, I don't get it. Whole galactic empire looks like Arrakis in 10,191 AD.. ok this 7:40 gives me much hope because they set show in the timeline where literally everything should remind about very recent epic war against the machines. Butlerian j*had actually is my fav part in whole Dune universe, perhaps one day we'll see the prequel to this prequel 😏about machine war, but the budget of such show will put all CHOAM banks to shame.
Yeah, it feels more like "200 years before Dune".... like, 10,000 years is longer than all of recorded human history. There's people alive right now who don't even think the world is 10,000 years old anyway. None of the plot lines and character beefs can survive that long so I hope they don't even try.
@@jd3d_cgi actually, this show set in time close to our real timeline. Dune movie (book 1) is the year 10191 AG, and our real 21st century is year 11000 BG. In other words, movie is 21k yrs into our future and the show is 'only' 11k yrs into the future. (and ~80yrs after the end of machine war) My point being, I expected quite different visual style, but obviously the showrunners wanted to attract the movie fans. But then why set the show 10k yrs into the 'past', I don't get it.. PS. I hope it will be good, I trust HBO!
Like the top comment says, this series will live or die by its writing. The cast is great, the acting will no doubt will great, the sets, the visuals are all great (although, honestly, I wouldn't have minded if the differentiated themselves a bit more from the movies, esp since the movies weren't particularly faithfull to the books. The architecture esp later on in messiah is so grand and beautifully colorful etc). The fashion being this similar a thousand years prior is a bit strange for example. I am very worried for the show, because everything I've seen looks ok or even great. But everything I hear from the writers screams "dune for modern audiences" .. she kept going on and on about how it's a show about two middle aged women. Not really something that most people will get excited about

I am cautiously optimistic about the series, because it’ll be so great to jump back to the Dune universe. But we’ll see It would be really wild if the HBO series elaborated more on CHOAM or the Guild Navigators, or the Mentats before Villeneuve’s Dune Messiah. I really wanted to see Villeneuve’s treatment of the factions before anyone else. Also is it just me or does the actor who play Kieran Atreides look like the one who played Paul in the 2000 SciFi miniseries? Haha
The trailer revealed almost nothing of importance. A trailer is made to cater to the biggest audience possible. That being said, the probability that the writers misunderstood the dune universe is very high. I wouldn’t keep my hopes up
I’m very much looking forward to seeing the show, I’ve more enthusiasm for a prequel ( House of dragons style) in the Dune universe than following the book series. Although a massive fan of Villeneuve work and moderately looking forward to Messiah, the plot direction taken in part 2 (Chani, Alia, or lack of) leaves me wondering if will make a film as strong as the first two films
Not seeing any mention of Vorian Atreides who was one of the main characters in "Sisterhood." Did I just miss it, is his part supposed to be a surprise or does this confirm that HBO will change much Dune lore.
I'm optimistic, if I read the trailer correctly. I have every expectation of a twist in the formation of the Bene Gesserit breeding program. It has to do with the Corrino Princess. It's a guess from the released scenes and a feeling.
It looks great. But how are the showrunners going to introduce a dozen main characters, establish, anchor the story, and run it to a satisfying conclusion in 6 episodes? I haven't seen a good ensemble SFF pulled off competently since The Expanse, so am more than a little skeptical.
Visually it looks stunning. I'm not Brian Herbert's biggest fan but his work may be more easily translated to cinema than his father's. I have no doubt the performances will be good with this cast, so it'll come down to the writing. I don't think it'll be as heavily thematic as the Dune movies, but hopefully the writing succeeds in other ways.
Excellent breakdown. I think the secret they are talking about is the sisterhoods computers which they have. I would agree with you that hopefully this show will delve deep into the political world of the Dune universe, and to give it the depth and intrigue which the books have plenty of. i want this to be a good show. but anything based off of Brian Herbert's books has me very very skeptical. i'll watch it because it's Dune and they're clearly using the visual language from Villaneuve's films...but man...I really don't like most of Brian Herbert's stuff.
It seems to only be loosely based on the Sisterhood of Dune book anyway. Desmond Hart is a completely new character with a great power so I think we can't really say what the series is going to contain or really be about. In that way I guess they will get more people to watch as a result, due to curiosity.
It’s a really good cast, I liked the films altho Denis’ world building impressses whilst rarely satisfying so it’ll be interesting to see what someone else does stretching out the world. Great cast, HBO, a good brand with cache, id love to see what Ridley Scott or a similarly visual autuer would do with Dune (part of me still prefers Lynchs Dune over Villenueves. ) Raised by Wolves was brilliant
I think that if hollywood wants to make a Girlboss series with an extended lore that makes it natural and organic, this is the chance. The cast looks really promising. The production looks good. In the end it boils down to the script. Personally I´m ready for it to be disgusting given the state of script writing in this last decade. But hoping to be gratefully surprised.
I think it's either going to be really good or really bad. I would love to see an early-GOT quality political intrigue show set in the dune universe, but I'm worried that the reason the movies did so well is because they were directed by Denis Villenueve, and this show just doesn't have that. It could very well end up being a rings of power situation, where the writers try to emulate a good adaptation rather than working closely with the the source material and creating realistic individual motivations
It is "based upon" Sisterhood of Dune and not "adaptation of". What it means? That writers have free reign on what they want to implement in story. They can use characters from that book, but set them in vastly different events or create their own line of events. Same thing went down with both Witcher and Halo TV series. It is unkown why Denis Villeneuve removed himself from involvement from this show, but if director of the most critically recognized movies of this decade has resigned of position as both writer and producer. But it doesn't fare well for this series. Making any series into something akin to Game of Thrones failed miserably. But by what I see from this trailer they want to 'shock the viewers." It just won't work.
Looks 'Villeneuve', but I have a bad feeling this is going to be a plotting mess like so many GoT 'political intrigue' wannabees due to inexperienced or 'not really fan' writers and showrunners. I'm curious how they're going to square the circle with the Sisterhood NOT being BG in this iteration, but within the six episodes demonstrating how they are or will become the BG? It can't just be 'the spice'; that's the macguffin of this season. The BG are powerful precisely because of all the real-world millenia influences that feed into their training, like martial arts, yoga, prana bindu, etc. The spice is the literal cherry. Watson and Williams as the Harkonnen sisters will nail whatever they're given though.
The fact the name was changed from Dune: Sisterhood to Dune: Prophecy could be a good sign. I would love a mature, rich, and complex look at some female heroes and villains - but I will scream if they try and cheapen it all down to !Girl Power! and just make female characters that can beat up men 3 times their size. Someone should have the balls to write about the strengths that make women unique, not just keep transposing male physical strength onto women. The last ten years have been marked by the worst representation of women - writers who have claimed to be putting women characters forward but who have done nothing but write male characters with female actors.
Just from the clips, looks like the entire Butlerian anti-technology theme may be excised from the story line, in favor of an anti-Sisterhood movement. We'll see.
I am impressed by the look. HBO has spent some money. The trailer is a little bit vague, unsurprisingly given the complexity of the Dune Universe. It is hard to say whether or not it will come close to the movies, but as a big Dune fan I am extremely hopeful.
I just hope HBO/Max don't turn the WORLD of DUNE into what Disney did to STAR WARS; with diluted plots all to serve the w o k e agenda and forced inclusivity using these epic literature as a vehicle for passing down the current ideologies, and disrespecting the source material while doing so.

There's a certain curious confusion I feel when the TRAILER for this "fluff/money-grab" series looks like it might _actually not_ be AS BAD as the Dune Part 2 MOVIE _actually was._ But of course: my valuable hope - which I've learned well not to waste - must be earned... and is not given (without PROVEN merit) to EITHER.
