Denis movie is true to the look of a future of DUNE BUT NOT HERBERT'S VISION ACTUAL BOOK STORY, so fk off with this as sucking every new film bestest evah, all of you attention whoring reviewers reactions, cuz modern special effects arez so great but FACT MOST ALL the Dune scripts SK SHYT as it starting with promise but most all not filmed or cut the 2nd film is just Denis get the Gen X know nothings interested by making it all hip kid attitude with young fremen and no real dialogue of characters to make DUNE's true story just non stop commercial vignettes or RU-vid Tiktok bites yay Worms.
Among some other errors in this, like showing a clip from the 1984 Dune of Paul and his mother Lady Jessica when talking about how Sean Young was cast as Paul's love interest Chani, you also made the huge boo boo of saying that Glenn Close put a bullet in Robert Redford in The Natural, she played Redford's childhood love interest that shows up years later in his life after he's a famous ball player with what turns out to be his son from the one night they'd spent together years before on the eve of him leaving their small town to try out for the big leagues with his God given talent for baseball, it was Barbara Hershey who put the bullet in him that side tracked his career for year's, not Glenn Close.
It was third time lucky for the film, but without the lesson learned from the previous two attempts, we wouldn't have had the latest, successful version. For my money, my favourite is still the David Lynch (Alan Smithee) epic. It took me several viewings and becoming familiar with the book, but I absolutely love it. Things criticised by others, like the internal monologues, are the parts I liked (how else could you have the exposition necessary for such a complex work?) I loved the sets, locations, sfx, the realisations of the Guild emissary, the mysticism (Siân Phillips was perfect) and the geopolitics. Only "down" was Baron Harkonnen. Overdone, too physically repulsive. Sting dialled his part in. Otherwise, I would say to Mr. Lynch, considering that studio execs did what studio execs always did, and continue to do today, that is thwart the creative process, he did an incredible job and should be proud. His Dune wasn't the first, and wouldn't be the last movie to be f*cked Up by studio interference *cough* Justice League
Also, Dune was quite cynical and bleak in its outlook of humanity, with not so good people toppling worse people while using natives and their religion to their advantage. All the while his LOTR was a fantastic heroic tale with a happy ending. Er, and Glen Close WAS the love interest for Robert Redford's Roy Hobbs. The one that shot him was Barbara Hershey.
But I doubt even Tolkien could deny that historically what Herbert observed about how religions have been used in human history was accurate. Herbert never outright said Catholicism is false. But, even Tolkien would admit, most religions are false and used for political and social control-His only refutation would have been that his faith, Catholicism, was true.
I was allowed to pick my own book to do a book report on in the 7th grade so I got my oldest sisters copy of Dune she just finished and show it to my English teacher. She said i could use it for all five book reports because it was so long. I said sure because I had already started to read it and couldn’t put it down. I got A’s for my report it was so detailed. What a novel. What great movies
Wow, that’s quite a feat as a 7th grader! I didn’t read the books until I was in college. I’m pretty sure the politics and plots within plots would have bored me if I read it when I was younger.
The sci-fi channels version of books 1-3 were the most accurate versions. They were incredible. Loved the first movie, and the most recent ones, but fairly, the sci-fi channel did it the best
I’ve first read Dune when I was 15 and have been re-reading the book roughly every 2 years since then. I’m now… actually never mind that. The point is this is a pretty solid piece. And I was actually ready not to like it because of the use of the word “franchise” but no, this is extremely well researched (I learned quite a bit actually which, of course, I didn’t think I would). I subscribe. Kudos kids! (I said never mind that…)
It was Kim Basinger who went on to put a bullet into Robert Redford's character in "The natural", not Glenn Close. Glenn Close's character played Robert Redford's long lost love interest. Just saying. :-)
I actually think the rest of the dune books will each be made into two movies. So I think Dune Messiah will get two parts and then I think children of Dune will get two parts and dune, Messiah, two parts and chapter house Dune will get two parts.
I read Dune in its first paperback release. I was probably 16, and felt like I really understood it, though on my second and third readings, I can only chalk that up to the hubris of youth. I actually liked Dune 1984. The FX were above average for the time. The script took a lot of shortcuts, but was forgivableb due to the time constraints. My biggest objection to the movie was the treatment for the Harkonnens, particularly the Baron. I 100% attribute this to the DeLaurentis influence. I liked the mini-series, but found the FX to be weak, and the performances were merely tolerable, perhaps because so much had to be done before a green screen, with sub par FX in the background. To its credit it made the characters true to the book, with a MUCH better treatment of the Harkonnens. The most recent Dune was a triumph in every way. I did see it on Max first, which is probably why I only saw it twice in the theater. I am absolutely looking forward to Dune Messiah.
Rebecca Ferguson has never read the novel. She confirmed this again on Colbert last month. The film didn´t win Best Picture either. It infamously only won Below The Line Oscars and wasn´t up for a prestigious award, like Best Director or any of the action categories.
In the Colbert interview she does confirm she hasn't finished the book. “By the way, I did read the book,” she told Colbert. “I haven’t finished it…I tried reading this book, it’s hard, it’s dense.” What we say in the video is "After seeing Villenueve's vision and reading the novel..." We didn't feel it necessary to say she didn't finish it as she read enough to understand her character. Hopefully that clears things up.
The syfy minseries might have stuck to the plot, but it ran roughshod over some of the characters. Turned Gurney Hallack the troubador warrior into a toadying sergeant at arms
Is this the voice of Bill Real (I hope that I spelled your name correctly) from different Mormon podcast? Anyway super job loved how you explained the history of Dune and how it was brought to the big screen. Looking forward to more of your podcasts (either Mormon or better yet movie) Thank you
@@ThePopcast Definitely a better version than the Theatrical release. I remember showing the extended cut to a friend that hated the movie, his opinion was totally changed. He went out and bought the extended DVD.
@@MartinCHorowitz I am going to go watch it again. I love the 1984 theatrical release, but I do recall the extended cut feeling better. Thanks for the comment!
hey, you guys, mm I would like to know your opinion on the end of Quantum Leap season 2. specifically, who did Adison leap into? Or who leaped out so she could leap in. What do you think of the theory that Sam just leaped home? And do you think that it's going to get a season 3?
@@ThePopcast Just for our clarification that's your other channel, right? Will it be on u-tube? Not on patreon or anything like that where I need to pay money to hear it.
Hey Bob, yes my friend. That's are other channel at youtube.com/@thepopcastlive It's on youtube and we cover the more current TV shows and news etc. No need to pay, we'll be covering Quantum Leap soon and you can always chat during the show and Brian will be glad to discuss it.
@kennethlarocque2605 Dune Messiah is a great book. Denis Dune Part 3 is not going to have much to do with the book. Frank Herbert wrote strong female characters, but Denis Dune Part 3 is going to go, girl boss. It's expected these days and will help Denis win a Hollywood Statue. No lady boss, no prizes.
Glenn Close DID NOT shoot Robert Redford in The Natural! She played his wholesome childhood sweetheart who he married later on. Barbara Hershey is the one who shot him. C’mon man.
Most comprehensive???? Rebecca Ferguson has said in more than one interview that she has never finished reading “Dune”. Comprehensive? I’ll stop there….
According to our research, she read enough of the book to understand her character and want to play the role. We didn't think it was important enough to say she didn't finish the book. What we say in the video is "After seeing Villenueve's vision and reading the novel..." Hopefully that clears things up. Here is the quote That said, she’s since made up for lost time. “By the way, I did read the book,” she told Colbert. “I haven’t finished it…I tried reading this book, it’s hard, it’s dense.”
This is not the finally realised screen adaptation, not unless you're drinking the kool aid. There were directions Villeneuve took the movie which were far away from the book. Jessica's scheming to make Paul accept his destiny. Chani's secular stance verged on insolence. Most importantly, where is the spacing guild? It was their intervention which pre-empted any retaliation from the houses, choam and the gesserit's. No, Dune remains unfilmable,.
Thank you so much for the feedback. There are a lot of names and some difficult ones, but we spent a lot of time trying to get them all right. Let us know which ones are off so we can revisit them. Thanks!
@@ThePopcast Thank you for replying, I am sorry it has taken me song long to get back to you. I'm afraid I don't remember the whole list, but Jodorowsky's name is pronounced /hɒdɔːrˈaʊski/; you're not the only ones that get that wrong. I don't want to rewatch the entire video, despite how good it is, but I think you mispronounced "Leto?" and "Yueh." Please don't take my original commentary as an insult. I respect what you make, and I guess I just want you to be more perfect than you already are. Blame the linguist in me. edit -- I don't recall if you did this, but many place the stress on Harkonnen on the wrong consonant. It's not HarrKonnen, but HarkonEN.
In their defense, I personally learn the correct pronunciation... Then can't remember which is the right and which was the initial mispronunciation. 😅 Names can be hard. Words are hard in general.
Unfortunately, for all of us, this is the most BORING / milk-toast version of Paul there EVER has been. WHY people are calling this version so great is BEYOND me because the actors (with the exeption of Mamoa) seem to be so damn boring. THe 1984's acting cast is FAR superior to this movie's and even the SCi-Fi's version had more interesting characters. Sorry Dune but Christopher Walken can't save you......because he's not playing Christoper Walken and his real acting chops are being restrained. The Patric Stewart Gurney Haleck is FAR superior :) nuff said?
I was born in 1969 and read the books starting in 1983. I just saw the second part of dune. I think both movies of Denis V. take on Dune was outstanding!!! Can not wait for Dune Messiah.
Personally, I loved both of these versions of it. I'm not a huge fan of camp though, and go for the slower paced historic or historic based genre stuff so the very real feel world building easily won me over, and I find the subtle acting exceptional for the HD film close ups. I agree that in a play they would be considered less exciting for sure, but with film close ups I end up enjoying the subtle acting more than the stage acting style. I'm glad you have a version of this story on screen that you enjoyed so well though, it's wonderful when that happens for you. I do really like the Everything Great About Dune Cinemawins video on that film.
Agree on every point and more but I'm too exhausted to write up every one. Villeneuve's Dune showed me that it's too early to give the 1984 film up for lost.
In the books the spice doesn't 'bend' space, it was the Holtzmann drive invented by Norma Cenva (she was also responsible for creating Guild Navigators). The progressive use of spice enhanced the mental abilities of the navigators of the Spacing Guild, enabling them to 'see/calculate' safe routes through folded/wormhole space. The books are well worth the time it takes to read them all and so rewarding.
I hate that people have compared it to Lord of the Rings. Both are groundbreaking but in very different ways. LOTR is set in a world far removed by our world, whilst Dune is the future and therefor has a human history. And history repeates itself as we all know. That is why I always prefer Dune. It is still grounded on our reality as we know it, no magic but a possible evolution of mankind. That is why I always prefer sci-fi over fantasy.
Another line from the Lynch film that's not in the book but should've been: "It is by will alone I set my mind in motion; it is by the juice of Saphoo the thoughts aquire speed, the lips aquire stains, the stains become a warning, it is by will alone I set my mind in motion." -Mentat Piter Devries
I have read the original 6 Dune novels double-digit times! The recent Dune I & II are really good, just too short. If HBO can do 8 seasons of Game of Thrones, there can be much more from the Dune universe on the big & small screens. (the quest for huge profits sucks!)
I felt the same about the new movies. They’re great but there’s just so much in one book from the series that things need to be glossed over in the interest of time.
Chani must be made a strong empowered female. Denis Dune, not Frank's Dune. Frank didn't write strong enough female characters to get Denis a Hollywood Statue. Denis Dune 3 is going LADY BOSS WOKE.
@@yarsivad000.5 Yeah, I knew that, but it still rankles that these two movies were doing such a great job of bringing DUNE to the screen in a relatively faithful adaptation, then to pull the rug out... Going woke is not a great strategy overall. Just as Disney and the MVU.
@Mentorman63 Yes, I was very disappointed. Another thing that warned me that things were going woke. In the book, there are two types of Freemen, City and Desert. In Denis's movie, there are also two types of Freemen, North and South. The North are very perceptive, not religious, not superstitious, sensible, the "Bible Belt." Southern fundamentalists are dangerous and superstitious, easily excited to violence and war. It's an obvious analogy of the USA by a lefty Canadian. "Those stupid Americans will never catch on." The North is our liberal cities, and the South is our South and mid-west. North=smart and sensible. South & mid-west=love the Bible and are of low intelligence.
@@Mentorman63 The books are great. 1984 Dune is very good, but changed teaching the Freemen a new fighting style to having developed a weapon that can kill with sound to avoid a lot of hand to hand. There is still knife fighting. And the Sci-Fi mini series was very close to the book with the best version of the Baron Harkonen. He was very clever in the book. I do hope I’m wrong about Dune 3, but I think woke is the plan. Just the 6 Frank Herbert books, his son’s 20 or so are bad. I listened to a few on audio books. Cash Grab.
No I personally don’t believe that any of the movies or miniseries did the novel justice. Paul and the fremen are not as described in the novels Paul was described as looking younger than his age and the Fremen were described as smaller people who looked under nourished with protruding bellies and the lack of muscles in their arms and legs. I did prefer the mini series on sci fi channel but it still fell short. I believe that the only way to do the novels better is to create an entire string of CGI/anime production miniseries. No sets no locations no costumes no props no elaborate visual effects. Just voice actors sound effects and CGI/anime production. From the pages of the novels to film then to televisions everywhere.
i enjoyed the original movie bc it was made as a stand-alone movie... only loosely related to the book series.. such as the rain t the end on Arakis would have killed everyone addicted to Melange. i honestly feel like there is no real way to truly make a book into an enjoyable movie.... but that's just like... my opinion... man.
Tolkien actually was an anti-colonialist himself-He even mourned the fact that the United Kingdom had a crushing affect on Scottish, Welsh, and Irish languages and cultures-And he lamented the subsumption of his own native England and English culture into the artificial British Empire and United Kingdom-Read Lord of The Rings and you’ll find echoes of Old English, the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, Wales and Scotland. Tolkien also mourned the effect the British Empire had on third world lands and folk. When it comes to colonialism, Herbert and Tolkien were aligned. Where the men fiercely split, was on religion. It’s role, it’s truth, it’s past, and it’s future.
Idk. To me, it's just a great sci fi story. I don't need to look any farther than that. And the books by his son just make the universe bigger. Plus, the new movies for me,are just updated versions of the original movie.
Let me just say I loved the book first. I grew up catholic and see the tragedy of religious hucksterism where top-down heirarchy keeps entire countries in grinding poverty while living in luxury and promising miracles tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes.
A picture of Frank hangs in my kitchen. I’m not ever gonna watch those new movies. Race and gender are important parts of his vision. The mutilation of Liet was all I needed to hear about
I love the movies and the books. But the portrayal of Mahdi as a Messiah is insulting to a Muslim. We know Isho son of Mary will be the Messiah, and Mahdi is his main general.
The page count depends on the publisher, but nowhere near 892. The edition I own consists of about 650 pages with annexes. Even with all the peculiarities of the layout, it simply cannot reach a number as high as you claim in the video.
I love the '84 version as well as the current iteration. It's similar to my relationship with The Shining novel vs. movie. I love them independently from each other and in different ways.
