Dunedin New Zealand Walking Tour [4K] 

Join me for another one of my walking tours whereby this time where i’m in the lovely city of Otepoti (Māori) Dunedin which is located in the Otago Region of New Zealand. With a population of around 130,000 it makes Dunedin the second largest city on the country’s South Island or 7th largest overall. Dunedin which roughly translates for Scottish Gaelic to Edinburgh or Otepoti is well known for its strong Scottish historical influence and impressive display of Victorian and Neo-Gothic building architecture. The city once very much had its heyday especially dating back to the Otago Gold Rush Era of the 1860s which attracted huge migration of European and Chinese prospectors to the already bustling population who had lived in the city first already established back in 1848 by the Lay Association of the Free Church of Scotland and thousands of following Scot’s. In fact during this time the city actually became New Zealand’s most populous city and largest urban area and unlike nearby Christchurch which was unfortunately heavily damaged by earthquakes of recent years many of the city’s grander buildings and institutions still remain to this day. Also located in Dunedin is The University of Otago first established in 1869 which is the oldest and most prestigious in the country and with a student enrolment of around 22,000 or roughly 1/5th of the city’s population the city is also firmly a university town with a vibrant youthful student population with a good nightlife and many more affordable eating places. Combining great history, vibrant cultural influences and a lively student population Dunedin is a well worth visiting city in New Zealand’s South!
In this walking tour we start off at the Dunedin Railway Station which is one of the most iconic buildings in the whole country, we then proceed past the excellent Otago First Settler’s Musuem, past the Old Central Fire Station and then head over the University of Otago to see its magnificent Neo-Gothic buildings and vibrant student scene first hand. After that we then walk up to Brackens Lookout for a nice vantage point across the city before heading up to the lovely Botanical Gardens with its myriad of different gardens and walking tracks. Next we check out Vibrant George Street which is the vibrant main thoroughfare of Dunedin and also surrounding streets. After that we then check out the lovely beaches of Dunedin including a vantage point of the spectacular Otago Peninsula from Sir Leonard Wright Lookout and St Kilda and St Claire Beach’s. Further along we then proceed to check out the Olveston Historic Home which is up some steep streets allowing for more vantage points of the city and then we conclude by visit further up George Street past the Octagon and the historic Old Boy’s High School and First Church of Otago.
