I felt pretty conflicted about this one, but I'm glad I reviewed this game?

Two things I would like to add: 1. There is a lot of fan-made material out there to greatly expand on the core game without spending a lot of money. 2. The system always asks a lot of open questions, that the players try to answer. This creates the world in a cooperative way. As others have pointed out, this is better suited for a more creative improvisational manner of playing rpgs.

I have forty years of experience with role-playing games. I've played dozens, and read more than that. The rules for Dungeon World are poorly written, but I figured out why after reading other people's advice on it. They attempted to codify all the things that a GM does into "moves." As a GM, this confused me, but once I understood that this is just what I've always done anyway, it started to click. Dungeon World is a great system, but more so than with other systems, it really demands creative people in the game. It's very much like improvisational comedy, but for fantasy adventure instead. If it's right for you and your group, the system is fast, effortless, and as realistic/fantastic as you want it to be. I still play other games. I'm currently playing Forbidden Lands, and I intend to play Dungeon Crawl Classics. They all offer different experiences.

That isn't just a Dungeon World thing, that's a Powered By the Apocalypse thing in general. The idea is that they're trying to show you what sort of story the rules are actually designed for.

for what it's worth i think its cool to look at games that others have built upon, its kinda neat to see what sticked or what had to be changed like what you said with the playbooks

We’ve just started my first Dungeon World game, I’m usually a GM, but fortunately I’m playing with others into other RPG systems so enjoying getting to kick back as a PC.

Great review. Thanks. I’d be interested in what you have to say about World of Dungeons.

I was questioning whether you were a fellow Kiwi, as your accent isn’t that different, but then I saw the Aus link. Still good to have another Downunder RPG fan covering a range of games.

You should definitely play/review Monster if the Week if you like Dungeon World.

I think Dungeon World is still my favorite way to "play D&D" these days (in spite of the games flaws), but there is a lot to be said of John Harper's "World of Dungeons" (a kind of stripped down riff on this game). That said I think I like the games that WoD inspires (Offworlders and F.I.S.T.) a great deal more.

I've seen a good number of reviews for Dungeon World and they all mention the Save Master tools known eat FRONTS. I'm not sure you mentioned it.

I've heard through the grapevine that these days there's a lot of DW "hacks' to developed by people with a better grasp on how PbtA games work. Of course like everything these days they're hiding in a Discord server somewhere.

Better question, is dungeon world a good gateway from dnd to pbta?

Nice review. Pretty much spot on. I like DW, but it is rough and `showing its age` per se.

I think Dungeon World is a great game if you want to play a way more cinematic DnD. But, it's a bit of an outdated PbtA game, which isn't its fault. I just think other PbtA games like Root, Masks, Avatar Legends, Monsterhearts, etc, all surpass it with their more fleshed out mechanics. It kind of feels chained down by DnD. A second edition would be nice, but I don't know if that's going to happen given the controversy Koebel got himself into.

I think Masks and Monsterhearts are good, but man Root and Avatar are both so overwritten and half baked.

subscribed. good review. I enjoy Dungeon World but I LOVE APOCALYPSE WORLD! So while I love that more people play PBTA because of DW, I wish ApocWorld got more love.

The class-race restrictions are not a remnant of older style games. DW has them because it is evoking early (1974 to 1999) D&D and it has to have the iconic aspects and tropes associated with the early versions of that game. Otherwise it would just be a fantasy PBtA game and not what it set out to be... an old style D&D evocative PBtA game. I suspect you do not have memories of playing those so it will not evoke anything for you, which is cool, but that just means you do not connect to what it was trying to do. There are a lot of very cool things I cannot connect with and some crummy things I have nostalgia for. I am thankful we have had so very many games over the years and wish more people tried more of them.

Currently 8 sessions in tracking 25 Gnolls harassing trade caravans and enslaving children. I enjoy the injury while missing, and gaining experience when failing. But the lack of world building or suitable civilization-world-village content is sad for me. No established layout, can not go down Rain Run Street and enter The Yawning Portal in Forgotten Realms; Abutting the old city wall is the secret entrance to the Thieves Guild of Palanthas in Dragonlance. Mallus "The Fated Place" WH Fantasy; Golarion with Pathfinder as well as many other settings are {fleshed out}. We can not do that here...the city's have no buildings...streets have no names...realms have no direction. I am tasked with this as our story teller has passed it to me, because "This is Missing from the story". Why did the writer's not do this????

Is there any particular reason why you aren't using any of those premade worlds? I know that Dungeon World places emphasis on "leaving blanks" for players to fill, but that is completely possible to do while using a more fleshed out world.

Good information but I just can’t get into PbtA type games. For some reason they seem so bland.

I did not like it. It was further from what I like in original Apoc World without fully grasping what makes dungeoneering fun. Like it was a fair attempt to be the best of both worlds and did not quite make it.
