I think the reason people prefer Ruby Rhod over Snails despite them being very similar character is because of their place in the movie and their relationship to the main character. Ruby is *supposed* to be annoying. Corben Dallas is the protagonist, the one we're meant to identify with, and he finds Ruby very annoying, and as we do as well, we can easily identify with Corben. Thus the character of Ruby Rod works in support of the movie. Snails is not meant to be annoying. He is the protagonist's companion, and we never see him or any other character annoyed by Snails' antics. But, as we find them annoying, we cannot identify with the characters, and thus Snails works against the movie.
@Tine_of_Nice_Dreams

I think Ruby's outrageous flamboyant fashion and sexuality is so unique it also endears him to people, whereas Snails is just kind of. generic and bumbling.
@Nozoki

I agree. If he was some asshole they had to drag along even though they all hated him, he would make more sense. Instead he's just a caricature of the goofy sidekick that everyone loves despite being less than useless.

Plus, Ruby was only in the last half of the movie. Not the ENTIRE movie like the video suggests

There's also the fact that Ruby wasn't a thief that was supposed to be good at his job.
@kgacalendar

And Ruby Rhod makes sense within the universe that the movie presents. He is this over-produced, over-pampered, over-dramatic popculture icon that is just so over the top and in your face that I really think the presentation is incredibly well thought out. Seeing the current media scene though, it's obvious that he is not over the top ENOUGH. Snails is just Wayans playing Wayans. No in-the-world presence, just glaring non-stop immersion destruction that takes any audience out of the movie immediately. Think of the rest of the movie what you want, but Wayans destroyed any chance of this movie becoming popular. It was such a misunderstood choice that it made everything else the movie could have been remembered for irrelevant.

Ruby Red was only in a portion of the film and was supposed to be flamboyant and annoying. The comedy worked because we are supposed to identify with Bruce Willis, who shows nothing but disdain for Ruby Red. Snails is in almost the entire film and he's supposed to be likeable. Big difference.

I liked Chris Tucker's character in "Fifth Element." He seemed like a carbon copy of Prince mixed with a reality TV/gossip channel star. A a loverboy/cool persona while the cameras were on, but is really just a nerdy/awkward character playing a part. He winds up being helpful to the team that he wound up with by total accident. The main characters in that movie: Goddess/Chosen One (Jovovich), Warrior (Willis), Sage/Holy Man (Holm), Apprentice (Creed-Miles), with Chris Tucker being The Fool. Of course it is THE ONLY movie I like him in!
@jonathancampbell5231
@jonathancampbell5231 9 лет назад
Casting Richard O'Brian as the leader of the Thieves Guild is a nod to The Crystal Maze, a British game show that he was the host of (hence the Thieves Guild maze). It has a terrific theme tune and he was gloriously hammy in the part. Also, NO Chris Tucker films? Not even Rush Hour 1 or 2? Really?
@Axterix13
@Axterix13 Год назад
Having recently rewatched those movies, yeah, definitely not them. Jackie Chan is likeable, but Tucker's character? He's just annoying to such a degree that it is understandable why he has no friends, and not understandable why Jackie's character becomes his friend, or how he even has a job. The movies definitely haven't aged well.

Agreed. Tommy Wiseau had big dreams, and passions when writing, directing and starring in The Room. But, I bet you that a) GoodBadFlicks thinks it's a bad movie and b) Sure wouldn't give a "What did you do today" argument to justify why we should celebrate it.
@Ektalon
@Ektalon 5 лет назад
The “What have you done?” argument at the end was possibly the worst way to conclude the review. Millions of people have passion and drive, spend large amounts of time on their projects and put their all into it, but that doesn’t guarantee a good final result. For an example to to ridiculous extremes, look at Hitler.

Wow. Hadn't realized that this movie was such a labor of love. I will say, as far as cheesy fantasy fare goes, I liked it a lot more than Eragon, which seemed very "by the numbers" and formulaic - a soulless cash-grab. At least in DnD, they tried to be funny and subvert audience expectations here and there. And it's always fun to see a serious actor pull a "Raul Julia as M. Bison" and ham up a villain role as if it's something they've always wanted to do. I think the reason Snails was hated so much was because he reminded everybody of Jar Jar Binks, who was getting a lot of flak at the time. (Both Snails and Jar Jar were thought of as "Minstrel Show" caricatures who had no place in modern movies...)

Ok, so while this channel has given me new appreciation on several films, this was not one of them. I'm a more well informed and I think the cameos (which I always miss) were fun, but I don't think I can willingly sit thur this movie again without a blood/alcohol of at least 0.15%. I mean I even like that crazy D&D cartoon, so I am easily amused. Not only was this movie really stupid, but it didn't feel like D&D to me, I got the references, and I can respect the fact that this was based in the director's own setting, but maybe that worked against him as the world felt very alien. The stakes felt really forced, and the over acting /under acting was too much for me to suspend disbelief. I felt like I was being conned into trying to feel something for the characters. I respect the effort, and have enjoyed some of his other movies , but this was a turd, and putting 10 years into it dose not make it any better. I think that most people didn't like this movie, and I have yet to meet someone IRL who enjoyed it

Haven't seen the film so the following is just a guess off the top of my head: possibly a reason people like Ruby Rod and dislike Snails is that RR came first and that thing Snails does vocally comes off as a bad impression. Also Ruby Rod is a character that is introduced as this 'cooler than cool' glamour object, but almost instantly gets cut down to size by Willis. The audience sees that he's flawed and more real for it; I guess it also pokes fun at celebrities with these slick personas. Obviously he's over the top, and if you don't like Tucker or the RR 'thing' then it's just going to rub you up the wrong way. I don't know if it comes across in the DnD movie but perhaps Snails doesn't have that same element so suffers for it?

That depends entirely on perspective. I'm guessing the last sentence is a reflection on yourself. Wow i am amazed! You really have high tolerance for really bad movies! Dungeons and Dragons is probably one of the worst fantasy movies I've ever seen. Horrible dialogue, overacting from most of the cast especially Irons, the odd editing choices, horrible CGI (even for its time it looks bad, if you can't have good CGI maybe reduce the number of effects shots?) and no, the movie does not have good fight choreography; the list goes on. I hated Wayans not because he's annoying, his performance seems out of place in the D&D universe and more suited to movies like Robin Hood Man in Tights. No amount of cameos and references to the games can redeem this horrible movie.

But his point is pointing out movies that are so bad he things they're good, that is, so terrible one has to laugh at them. And I agree. Except for the detestable Snails with his stupid comic relief sidecharacter bzzzzzt that's never funny. So, the only intentionally funny character in the entire movie is not funny at all, just annoying - see? When movies like this try to be funny, they fail. They should take themselves seriously, and so come accross as tremendously and most enjoyably funny, as Jeremy Irons does in this movie, bless him! I understand if you hate the movie, I get your reasons. But I for one can laugh at all kinds of things, and very very silly things that intend to be serious are some of those things.

@Cecil: I really like what you do here on your channel - acknowleding movies that are not great or masterpieces, but entertaining and kind of guilty pleasures nonetheless. Especially when you deliver background information I hadn't heard or read before... sometimes this alone makes me curious to re-watch or rent a movie. I saw 'Dungeons & Dragons' in cinema with some friends back then. Although we all agreed it was not the fantasy movie we hoped for, we had a fun evening with it. I had read about Director Courtney Solomon being a fan of the game and going on a Quest (so to speak) to get this movie made, and the fact that he SUCCEEDED really impresses me! Filmmakers with that a rocky road behind them and so much drive and passion always make an impression, be it Jim Cameron, Guillermo del Toro, Gareth Edwards or in this case Solomon.

Thanks! I try to let people know that just because a movie doesn't have an A list cast or a 200 million dollar budget doesn't render it bad. Also, showing what went on in the production can help to highlight some of the issues people will often have with a film, and make them look at it from a different perspective. While Solomon may not have entirely succeeded with D&D, I have a massive amount of respect for the guy for sticking with it and being able to follow through despite almost a decade of turmoil. A lot of other people would have given up.

Thanks for this review. I agree with the op here. All these little side details make a movie I already really enjoyed into a much more involved experience. I grew up with d&d surrounding me, used my dads first edition original books to dm a game my friends would do on the weekends, so the fact you actually know your shit here (or at least did the research) is heavily appreciated. Cawby Thanks for the sub! Oh I know my stuff. I've played everything from 2nd edition to 3 to 3.5 Unfortunately, my group drifted apart (life, girlfriends, etc) so I barely play at all anymore. I played an official 5th edition game at PAX EAST and had a ton of fun. Occasionally I'll even watch people play on Twitch. Since I did this they did another unconnected sequel (Book of Vile Darkness), which I have yet to see because it still hasn't been released on DVD. Wrath of the Dragon God is available solo or as a pack in with the D&D Bluray. I liked it and I'll probably do a video on it at some point. If you would like to watch another D&D themed video of mine, check out Mazes and Monsters. I even did a game table themed intro for it.

The problem I have with the Wayan´s character is that he does not fit into the movie at all. That being said; I really like how positive this channel is. I am so tired of people who seem to think they are better than the creators of movies cuz they find flaws with the film. I never thought that the creator of this movie shouldnt make movies again, but the movie is bad. But I guess I can admire the creator´s passion, not that it helps the quality of the film itself.
@GoodBadFlicks
@GoodBadFlicks 9 лет назад
Andy Ace I thought Wayans was too over the top and instead of being the likeable bumbling guy, he was mostly unlikeable. He didn't ruin the movie for me but I thought he could have been toned down a bit. I admire Soloman for sticking with the film where many others would have given up. While it may not have been the D&D movie people wanted, in the end he made the film that he wanted to make and no one can take that away from him.
@AndyAce83
@AndyAce83 9 лет назад
GoodBadFlicks You make a lot of good points in the video and I agree with you. First of, respect most go to the visionary creator. One has to admire a person who create something out of passion. And I guess I shouldnt be too caught up with Wayans character either. As for Wayan as an actor I only enjoyed him in one movie and that is Requiem for a Dream. But that is one of my favorite movies so I can´t say I disslike him when he was a part of that. And I really, really liked him in that as well. Especially since I know he normally is "just" a comedic actor, but does such a great job in that movie. The contrast is so great. I think the evil wizard is a great character, but I never really liked the other comic relief characters. Its fine if a character has comedic sides, but when they get reduced to just comedy I often find it annoying. Even in Lord of the Rings I found the dwarven character (Gimmli?) annoying as he was too "funny". In the first movie he was great, but in the second and third one he became just a comic relief and I started to become annoyed. I like Ed Wood and seen some of his films and I don´t think they are as bad as people say they are. He has the same treatment as D&D movie in that people seem to ignore the passion and drive and sometimes even guts that Ed Wood showed. Glen or Glenda is an example of that. He made a movie about crossdressing in the 1953. Is it a good movie? Probably not, but its really arty and subject matter was very provocative at that time. At a time when I had to watch a lot of modernistic movies I couldnt help but think that movies like Hirosima Mon amore was called great, but had many of the same qualities as Glen or Glenda. I even wrote a college paper about it. I got a D ;-)

I've been binging your videos recently, and even though I disagree from time to time I've enjoyed your insight. I don't like this movie, but I agree that people not wanting Solomon to ever direct again is asinine. However, so is your closing statement. Fighting one ridiculous thought process with another isn't the way to go about that. Solomon may have worked his ass off, but he clearly had some money and connections to give him a decent head start. His mother, as you said in your own video, was a production coordinator on several projects. She knew people, and that no doubt helped Solomon. What have I done today? I rewatched Freaked, worked a twelve hour shift, and fed my cat. A better question would be what I've done in the last decade, or within a decade. The same period of time Solomon had. Between sixteen and twenty four I wrote a book. I couldn't get it published. I hired an agent to help. He conned me. As I got older I started hating my manuscript, it was never good enough and I constantly found flaws in it. When I was twenty four, I got really drunk and in a fit of rage deleted the whole thing and gave up. In hindsight, if I had been published it would have been terrible. Maybe it Courtney is better than me because he wasn't held down by crippling self-criticism. Maybe I was just decent enough not to put yet another shitty product out. But that isn't really the point. Imagine a professional heavy weight boxer tripping over his own feet and falling over, this fuck up costing them a match. It would be outrageous to tell them to stop boxing, but lets say a 4'11" bean pole of a woman says as much in their irritation of their fuck up. Someone turns to them and says "I'd like to see you do better." That is one of the worse cop outs of criticism I think I have ever heard. You have to have similar accomplishments to be able to critique someone else's work? Should this apply to politics too? Should Hillary and Trump never face any kind of public scorn from people who never graduated college, aren't lawyers or business moguls? Yeah, I know, it was something you said four years ago. But it is something that bothers the shit out of me every time I hear it.
@GoodBadFlicks

I think you are reading into it wrong. What I meant was that he stuck to it. He did have some help getting his foot in the door but after that it was on him and he kept going. A lot of other people would have given up but he stuck to it for almost 10 years. The end product may not have been what some folks wanted but he is proud of what he was able to accomplish and no one can take that away from him. Criticism is one thing but too many people live to revel in the failures of others. So when I say "what have you done today?" what I meant was that instead of knocking down what someone else was able to accomplish, why not go out and try to do something?

Its ok. Don't ever stop doing what you love. (as long as what you love is legal lol) but seriously, everyone gets discouraged. You have to dig within yourself and keep going if you want to make something happen. Really sorry you got conned but unfortunately life is filled with hurdles. It sucks but there are others (like the guy who ripped you off) that are out there to make life miserable. The best thing you can do is take the aggression that comes from that and work your ass off to make something. Jim Carey was homeless and living in a tent on his sister's front lawn. Burt Reynolds was repeatedly told he couldn't act. Halle Berry grew up in a homeless shelter. JK Rowling was divorced, broke, and unemployed. 12 publishers passed on Harry Potter until a small publisher bought it and published only 1000 copies. Stephen King's Carrie was rejected 30 times and he threw it in the garbage. I could go on but I think you get it. Now, there still is talent and luck involved but you'll never know if you have what it takes if you give up. Don't.

I was starting to wonder what I'd missed with this movie, but not any more. BTW, were the character sheets in the movie, or was that an improvement of this video? You really must hate Chris Tucker to keep blasting him in a review for an unrelated movie. You may have missed that Ruby Rhod was supposed to be annoying, not sympathetic. The comedy resulted from Rhod's interaction with Dallas, who probably hated Rhod even more than you did.

I love D&D. But this movie is crap. Gamers and Gamers Dorkness Rising are much better D&D movies than this and they didn't even have a million dollar budget. Horrible story and bad casting. Flat acting or over acting. This movie had horrible looking dragons and it doubled down on the dragons. Not liking this movie and making the argument that some people don't like Jaws is comparing apples to a Holy Avenger. Not even the same ball park. There are probably a handful of people who don't like "Star Wars A New Hope" but that doesn't prove a point or make Dungeons and Dragons the movie any good. Like a blind date we all had high hopes for this movie and like a blind date we were completely disappointed and were just thankful it was over. Why do I hate this movie? It was the one shot to get D&D on the big screen and it failed miserably.

I remember seeing this film in theaters back in..2000, I think. I went with a bunch of friends who I played D&D with on a weekly basis. We were laughing throughout the movie. The acting was all over the place, the D&D stuff that was in the movie was just used in such odd ways. (Like the beholder acting as some kind of sentry guard along with a human guards...would never happen.) But, despite all the flaws, you can't not love this movie just for its sheer cheesiness and ridiculous nature. To me, it felt like this was a movie that should have been made in the 80's. Jeremy Irons and Bruce Payne are pure over-acting gold, and Kristen Wilson and Thora Birch are pure under-acting gold. Lets face it, this movie is fun. And you have to respect the amount of dedication that the director Courtney Solomon had in his 10 or 12 year quest to get it made. This is most definitely a "so bad its good" film in every sense of the word.

from what I gathered it was the material component she was using that allowed her to cast spells beyond her level. Also, I believe it wasn't a lightning bolt but a magic missile. I guess it all comes down to how lenient the DM was feeling. lol It didn't bother me all that much. I would have rather they stuck to the rules but I think they erred in favor of trying to make the movie more dynamic. Either that or they just wanted to make more special effects.
