Dungeons and Dragons - Nostalgia Critic 

Jeremy Irons knew exactly what kind of movie he was in and what sort of performance was required. Everyone else misses the mark.

Honestly, I prefer over-acting to underacting. At least with overacting its funny. Underacting is just… painful…

My only real experience with D&D is over hearing a game where this was going on. Come on Critic. This movie was a master piece. It had everything a good party for DnD should have. The normal RPG player, who wants to be the underdog hero. The nerdy RPG Player who is always going by the numbers and plays mage. The new guy, whose getting on everybodys nerves. The guy, who only joined the party to drink for free at a friends house. The smirky and mysterious dude, who always tries to insert his own ideas and disrupts the DM. The bored girlfriend who got dragged along and has to fill in for a missing player. The guy who tries to act cool but ends up being strange and dry. And finally the guy who has to overplay the crazy villain. Everthing is here. From the half-assed story, over the clicheed players, to the "players are to bad, insert confiniend plot device too drag out an obviously lost game" DM actions. Its brilliant. ^^

I can tell Jeremy irons is having a blast doing his role XD

Jeremy Irons is hysterical in this but i will say Justin Whalin gives a lot of heart to his performance. Him screaming over Snail's death feels much more real than most "NO!" moments in other films.

The bad acting, and reference to other works, like the Indiana Jones traps? Reminds me of how an actual Dungeons and Dragons campaign might go. Where a DM borrows, heavily, from other works, to make a cohesive, and interesting fantasy. Bad movie? Maybe. True to Dungeons and Dragons feeling? Absolutely.

You forgot to mention the biggest joke in the movie: They spent $45M to make it.

I shed tears when Bambi's Mother died, when Mufasa died, when Gandalf died (Until the next Chapter of LotR), when Albus Dumbledore died as well as some of my favorite Harry Potter characters who died, when "You know who" died in the Force Awakens, and I could go on but I would be spoiling. But this: 18:37 I never laughed so hard at a Main character's death.

I like to imagine all of Jeremy Irons' lines coming out of Scar.

Incredible to think that this thing came out just a year before Fellowship of the Ring. Without the LoTR movies, screen fantasy would still be languishing in an ocean of cheese.

This is brilliant if you see it as an actual group of new players playing their first round of actual d&d. Just look at it, the cheesy dialogue, the cardboard cutout characters that seem like they belong into a different movie, the over the topness of it all...It captures the essence of unskilled, unexperienced players that got to make their first own characters being railroaded like thoma the tank engine on a generic out-of-the-book-adventure, complete with badly copied riddles and traps from movies the DM has recently seen. It's spot on, and absolute gold :D Also, in the end there, somebody clearly cast greater miracle and burned about 8.000 xp and diamonds worth about 100GP to resurrect snails. That's pretty obvious :D

Jeremy Irons, Bruce Payne, and Richard O'Brien are the best parts of this movie.

I feel like Jeremy Irons knew this was a terrible movie and just wanted to have fun sucking (he definitely looks like he's having fun xD). I think he out-Shatnered Shatner........

They are not equally terrible. At least Jeremy Irons is enjoyable. That girl is just boring.

This movie greatly represents how an actual D&D game would be.

I lost it at the "I'm Healing You" part.

That was nothing like a D+D game. That plot was far too logical, too well constructed, and there was neither unrepentant sex or pointless violent bloodletting. Or vampires... god I need a new DM.

Underacting: Cringy, pointless to watch, hoping that they almost done with thier lines. (example: evry Kristen Steward roles) Overacting: Can be Cringy or sometimes funny to watch because they look like total buffoon (example: Nicolas Cage's bee scene in the Wicked man). In that case Jeremy irons's overeacting is way better to hear than Thora Birch's underacting. Point close

It's pretty amazing to think that this film is one year apart from The Lord of The Rings. The gulf in quality is just astounding.

as a long time D&D player I think this entire movie would have ended perfectly on a shot of four kids at a table like the entire movie was just one big table top game.

2:27 -- Every time I see this scene, I can't help but to assume that Jeremy Irons modeled his performance on what he EXPECTED the post-production team to add to the visual effects...unfortunately for him, they only added a minor touch of static electricity.

When Richard O'briens character mentioned a maze I was expecting a joke about the Crystal Maze. But I guess it's a tad too obscure to an audience outside the UK. :p

For a movie based on a tabletop roleplaying game, this is remarkably like the plot of one of the sessions. Granted, those are usually made by one guy in his off time....

the worst part is that this is almost exactly how the one shot campaigns that im in go almost every time. its like someone just wrote down everything that happened in a 12 hour game of d&d and just made that the script. if you are going for realism on an actual campaign then they got it right.

its pretty bad when the dragons in How to Train Your Dragon look more realistic than one in a live action movie.

Should I be embarrassed that this was the first date movie I went to or does it seal my nerd cred? Either way, I suddenly feel old. I was 17 when I saw it in theaters and it will be 17 years this December. Enjoy your youth, kids!

That Monty Python and the Holy Grail reference was perfect

Ok, the whole blue lip thing has gone unaddressed for far too long so I finally looked it up. Apparently Damadar (Bruce Payne's character) has blue lips because they are a side-effect of addiction to a drug called Sannish. I don't know if it was ever mentioned in the actual movie in full since I only saw this film once as a kid, but there you have it.

If you look at Dungeons and Dragons players as opposed to the characters, i see a LOT of similarities to the characters in this movie. You got the Over Acting Overlord who's super invested, the Cheeky Funny Guy that is honestly just there to have fun, The Girl That Feels She Has To Overcompensate Buy Being As Snobby As Possible, The One Who Really Doesn't Seem To Belong, And The Dwarf... who really just wants to be a stereo-typical sloppy angry little bearded man. Two thumbs up for accuracy! :D

Who's here because of D&D: Honor Among Thieves?

Honestly, I hadn't watched this movie until after I started playing D&D, and it reminded me of some of the goofy campaigns that my friends would come up with. It's a little more endearing if you think of it that way. It's just some teenager nerd's campaign, complete with every cliche that you can think of. It even becomes somewhat enjoyable at times like that.

I love the Doctor Who gag at 20:23! LOL!

This is honestly my favorite Classic Nostalgia Critic review. You can tell Doug is having fun with it, and it makes it all the more delightful to see.
