For effect 19 on the table: There is a 9th-level spell called Storm of Vengeance, which is likely a direct 5e parallel to the effect.

When reading the 2e Cataclysm table, keep in mind the differences in time keeping. 1 turn = 10 minutes. 1 round = 1 minute. 1 segment = 6 seconds = 1 modern round. There are 10 modern rounds to 1-2e round. The long effect is in line with the idea of cataclysm too. Loved the presentation!

Im saving this video. not for the armor. but for the disasters. Im definitely going to use that in some way... maybe as a final stroke of the BBEG. Players defeat the BBEG and he gives some speech about how his death will bring untold disaster. They have to decide to let him live (hopefully with some clever binding punishment or contract) or slay him outright. they slay him... and the heavens cry out as the BBEG was in fact the tool/child/plaything of some greater being who responds with one of the disasters. Or maybe the players reach the inner sanctum of some monstrous lair. They get the monsters loot but an artifact sits in a room, mysteriously undisturbed. A poem reads that untold glory and great disaster awaits any who take the artifact. They take it... ominous gong, the light of the world seems to darken slightly... nothing else happens. They short rest... nothing happens. They make their way out of the lair.. a few small animals skitter past birds fly overhead. They start talking about where they will go next and suddenly an Owl Bear tears out of the forest charging straight at them, they roll initiative but strangely combat consists of the Owl-bear simply charging past only making passing attacks at anything that gets in its way. as they sit there wondering whats going on a screaming sound draws their attention to a troll that crashes out of the wilderness 100 feet away, covered in centipedes, regenerating even as it is consumed by the writing mass that infests its skin. and thats when they hear the growing sound of the creeping doom coming for them. HAHA... gonna be epic.

Dming over the years you tend to really remember player classes/races and monsters. But a ton of people forget the magic items that are not in every single campaign. Relics like this and the lore with them should be documented in guides just like any creature or castle. Great job, these types of videos are my favorite from you Mr. Pickett.

Many of the anemic and seldom selected damage-dealing spells in 5e suddenly become great out of combat threats for players and NPCs alike if you scale up those pathetic areas of effect to "one square mile." >:3

Hey AJ, sweeet artifacts video. Now that is "Old School". Arnd sounds like a fallen angel or a deity trapped in the armor. It also reminds me of excaliber, the showing up when needed part. That acid rain would be a nightmarish event. A cave is the only thing that would save you. Buildings wouldn't last long. The surrounding horror would require some type of saving throw. Were else can you get epic level lore, only here. Thanks AJ & have a non-cataclysmic day.

Had something like this in a campaign, years ago. Not a cursed item, but the construction was flawed; not fatal, though, player survived finding out the issue. Swords, axes and even a giant's club would glance off the armor due to magical protection, but, smaller weapons, daggers or smaller animals with claws, etc, did 3x damage.

In a 3.5 edition game where I transported my players to Dark Sun, a very greedy ("oh, I found a magic item before anyone else saw it? I'm going to put it in") gnome assassin encountered a similar but darker suit of armor that I homebrewed. Being Dark Sun, it was leather studded with petrified wood instead of chainmail. I didn't give it this kind of depth of back story, but the spirit within this armor was an ancient barbarian who no longer had any sanity left, and its only purpose was to destroy civilization. The assassin was so excited to find obviously powerful studded leather armor that changed size to fit him, he grabbed it and put it on without any concern for curses or side effects. From that day on, any time that gnome entered a walled city, and each hour he spent in a walled city, he had to make two saving throws to resist the armor taking over. When the armor physically took over, it would psionically polymorph him into the potent aberration (I don't remember what creature it was) that the armor's leather had come from, and rampage through the city. When the armor mentally took over, it would put him into a barbarian rage modified in that he could no longer recognize friend from foe and the rage would last as long as there was a building, wall, or man-made structure within sight. The gnome assassin eventually multiclassed as a barbarian because he didn't want to give up the other beneficial properties of the armor.

This. This is what I truly love about your research and effort. Some people do not know that - actually, many 'items' actually have much more robust backstory and depth than say, generic monsters in a given setting. I will be adapting this this to my current campaign, although it will need some work, as my world is a homebrew inspired by Al-Qadim. So good to utilize for my cleric of Law, I think. Any thoughts on how to tweak it for a non-metallic armor for a non-deity artifact? Love from South Korea(we're all native Koreans, so all these in-depth lore really help us alot!)
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 4 года назад
Have the armour formed from links of pearl and jade, so there is no mistaking it was made by a god. Also, perhaps incorporate the symbol of the god in the chain patterns. The coat may be so old though, the god might be from a long lost culture.

@@AJPickett AD&D 2nd ed. rounds were longer too. Instead of a few seconds, each round was a minute. "A round is approximately one minute long.
