Known as the Nordic dragons due to their origin in the folklore of the vikings, Linnorms are some of the most powerful, ancient, enormous and evil of all dragon kind. Many are descended from legendary serpents such as Jörmungandr and at least one of them can go toe to toe with Tiamat or Bahamut in the Dungeons and Dragons roleplaying game.

Linnorms. feels like home. Also nice that you use art from the Swedish tabletop. Dragons and Demons (DoD) and most specificly from the Trudvang setting. Nidvallir was never a realm in norse myth though. it was a mountain range. the nine realms are Asaheim (asgard) Vanaheim, Elfheim,Manaheim(midgard) Svartalfheim(realm of the dwarfs) Jotunnheim, Muspelheim,Nifelheim and Helheim
@Eldagusto

It’s debatable, for one Helheim is in Niflheim so that is a bit redundant too.

My favorite Linnorm not from Norse myth would be Glaurung from Tolkien's Silmarillion and The Book of Lost Stories, the father of dragons, the first dragon made by Morgoth, and so, so, so evil. The whole story surrounding him is so tragic for the hero, even though he manages to slay the dragon, Glaurung still gets the last laugh.

Among the monstrous creatures and dragons in Norse mythology, Níðhöggr stands apart from all others, save for maybe Surtr. As, according to the Norse myths of creation, these two beings simply have no origin. They predate Ymir, from whose corpse all other life sprang. Surtr is often associated with Wrath while Níðhöggr is often associated with Hatred. Níðhöggr gnaws upon the roots of the world-tree, Yggdrasil, in the hopes of unmaking all that spawned from Ymir, whom Níðhöggr would have seen as being an unwelcome intruder on reality itself. All the other monstrous creatures and dragons have some sort of origin myth of their own, but not Níðhöggr and Surtr. Perhaps Níðhöggr _ate_ its origins...

One way I could think of fighting these horrors is finding one of the Metallic (hell maybe even Chromatic) dragons and finding a way to convince them to fight it. Maybe even a couple dragons cause these Linnorms sound freakishly powerful. I could see Steel Dragons who like to live among humans being especially keen on fighting these things. Also Golds for their crusade against evil.

Had linnorms attack the players while on an adventure in Ysgard. They were tracking down Loki, who stole a maguffin and he led them to Yggdrasil, where a horde of linnorms would spring from the ground. I'm curious why Tiamat would not team up with the Midgard linnorm seeing as they both seem to be of similar evil nature and would probably have similar want to get rid of Bahamut or just anything else. Could be a creative team up for a campaign setting big bad.
@AJPickett

@JohnA...
@JohnA... 5 лет назад
Quite right. And most "evil" characters do tend to have very large superiority complexes over everyone, that might also make it difficult, and the thing that many evil hierarchies seem to be in constant strife with those lower trying to take over the ones above them. Still think it might be an interesting temporary partnership as a major plot line. Possibly a long game backstab of sorts even at some point because of the differences.
@JohnA...
@JohnA... 5 лет назад
You mean the "rule of two" right? But probably would be more on that line from that side of the alignment side, where those who are good do not expect others who are good to stab them in the back (unless you want to get into the "good" who go to war with others for their own gain), with the "evil" alignment side you almost always know that the ones below you and cooperating are only doing so with the intent to further their own power and probably take you out when it becomes easy enough for them and beneficial. Just like with the "rule of two", though they accept it as a good thing there.
@JohnA...
@JohnA... 5 лет назад
Its called the "rule of two" because there is 1 sith lord and 1 apprentice, though they always know their apprentice is looking for their own apprentice and the moment they will be able to kill off their own master. That rule came about in the Darth Bane series where he didn't like the sith having more of a cooperating society developed (oddly was working decently for them), so he separated and started the rule of two when he thought that the rest of the sith were almost fully wiped out.

@zionthedragon8866
@zionthedragon8866 6 лет назад
Markus Nävergård yes, as lindworms are much to stupid and feral to come from the fey, and seeing how the gods, like the dwarf fafnir, can take the form of them and loose god powers, it makes sense that they aren't true dragons, and are WEAKER than dragons. The whole "they are ancient dragons" is dumb, it makes more sense to be like wyverns, in the sense they are distant related cousins of Dragons.
@AJPickett

Zion The Dragon it's D&D lore, they are ancient and their origin is Hades. Take it or leave it.

Fafnir was never a god. Fafnir was just a normal dwarf who conspired with his brother to kill their father for the treasure. later Fafnir betrayed his brother and his greed turned him into a Dragon( linnorm) to guard it. And Linnorms in norse myth are not stupid, they are more like Smaug from the hobbit
@markusnavergard2387
@markusnavergard2387 6 лет назад
hmmm Hades eh? thats cool. I dont really know where the linnorms come from in norse myth. they seem to not been made by the gods or the Jotunns. they might all be spawned from Nidhogg though. but where does he come from?
@zionthedragon8866
@zionthedragon8866 6 лет назад
Markus Nävergård in norse mythos, dwarfs are gods, thus why I call him a god, plus, no lindworms (Not dragons) besides the transformed fafnir had smaug intelligence, and even then, smaug from the movies is still dumb, sure he can talk, but that doesn't equate to smartness.

I wonder if the Godzilla world’s Manda could be a legendary tier Linnorm
@mrgilgamesh4252
@mrgilgamesh4252 6 лет назад
Sadly not, they would definitely be able to take one on in a straight fight, but they would not win. Manda is closer in design to a Chinese dragon and they are noted as being a water dragon, so their main strength would lie in their ideal environment (water). Plus they fight like a snake, focusing on their constriction and occasional sonic attack. Against something that could spew fire/ice/acid or similar, as well as power capable of fighting of their kind gods, it wouldn't really stand much of a chance. Out of all the Kaiju, Ghidorah is probably the closest in strength to a Linnorm and even then it probably doesn't come close.

Ah, Godzilla could probably take one on, but I don't think he could beat one by himself. If a Linnorm can fight with one of the creators of their kind, their power is on par with the beings that created them. Godzilla fought gods, demons and kaiju, but even he struggled with King Ghidorah and Destroyah. Both of which are probably similar in strength to a Linnorm. So I imagine he'd struggle to take one on by himself.

That could happen. Maybe when the linorms go extinct. Yet there could be an alternate plane. I'm sure the Forgotten Realms has lots of mysteries and lost legends. For exanple there could an ancient white dragon deep within the Spine of the World who was turned to stone by a mysterious bard. Now said dragon could be waiting for a hapless adventurer to accidentally lift the curse. Then the dragon decides to enslave the dwarves in the area. Now imagine if the dwarves had to be rescued by orcs and the PCs. Now that would be an adventure.

All gem dragons have been covered, UNLESS you are talking about the Asian called "dragon" lungs, like the jade lung, pearl lung, amber lung, etc. Also, what do you mean never got updated to 3.5? That issue is for 2nd edition.
@firetarrasque4667
@firetarrasque4667 6 лет назад
That's... That's what a gem dragon is. A dragon named after a gem. I'm not talking about the Dragon Rulers, it's the three in "That's not in the monstrous compendium!" Pearl, Jade, and Jacinth. If you want to get REALLY picky, they are never outright stated to be "Gems dragons," they are "Neutral dragons" "Named after gems" of the same family as the gem dragons. And you didn't know? The other Gem Dragons were updated for 3.5, along with the introduction of the Obsidian dragon.
@zionthedragon8866
@zionthedragon8866 6 лет назад
@@firetarrasque4667 yes, thoughs dragons are seen just how the metallic's steel, cobalt, and iron dragons, the chromatic's yellow, grey, purple, brown, and orange are all seen: official-Unofficial knock-offs of the main cast, and most players regard them, and even then, they aren't TRUE dragons of that class, even though they share the same traits, sure they could be considered part of that class, but some, like the jade dragon, is just some creature "related" to them, or MADE from them, thus not being truly a naturally dragon god made dragon. The jade is literally an Asian lung with wings, WHICH AREN'T DRAGONS, LIKE LINDWORMS AREN'T. Related? Yes, a dragon (jade) No. And the pearl EATS the pearls, and no, the other dragons aren't named for what they eat. Plus, other than crystal dragons, the REAL gem dragons don't have specific lair areas, some of these dudes(the ones from the magazines) are trying to either be like metalics(jade), or chromatics (Jacinth, and obsidian.). Pearl dragons aren't even pearl colored, they are grey from what I have seen and read. Plus the obsidians (WHICH ISN'T A GEM) Where an attempt to lead up to a "gem" equivilant of Tiamat, which the devs. Later realised how lazy that would be, and thus, as of now till other wise, canned the idea, plus, the obsidians, if they do return, need MAJOR nerfs, along with maybe a name change to one like Onyx (WHICH IS A BLACK GEM), and have them smaller and WEAKER than the rest of the gems. Over all, he might just talk about them in a later vid. Plus, he gives every minor dragon that don't originate from the main pantheon, of which it is added to, their own vid to get a better understanding of them.

AJ! Your reaction to the Funnel Web Spider sounds about the same as the one that I had when I saw a huge spider, either a Wolf Spider, or a Hobo Spider, run out from behind a small stack of stones that we had next to our front door, our only door actually, to grab some poor insect that landed on its web. Sadly, I was on the phone with my grandmother, and it was enough to cause me to drop an F-bomb, very loudly, for the first time in my life, in front of her. I apologized profusely, despite being in my twenties! But I explained that had she seen the monster run out of it's dark lair as I had, she'd have likely had the same reaction! It freaked me out more to realize that we had walked by it, within 2 feet, dozens of time, without knowing! Later that evening, I poured a 3 gallon pot of boiling water in to those rocks! It either left, or died! Hopefully the latter! I usually dont kill spiders outside of our house. Ive even been known to toss crickets on to their webs. But that one had to go!

@@dragon200ism Oh, not a malicious tone, more of a "I have more than enough lore to learn with one game system, so I will concentrate on that one thanks" tone :) From my perspective, Paizo was dragon magazine, so I love them for that, but Pathfinder has never much interested me because it is just a continuation of an old rule system, which is FINE, I understand totally that there was a market for it when 4E arrived and was not well received, but, I was one of the people who played 4th edition, and enjoyed it (not so much the lore, but the system itself was boldly innovative and great for new players particularly). Anyway, because of that, I just stuck with WotC and never invested in Pathfinder, thus, I only have a passing interest in it's take on myth and lore, because it can get pretty confusing if my brain accidentally crosses the streams.
