I like the idea of a Warlord Lich using Wraiths to create a spectral army for it. Sending it’s Wraith lieutenants outs to find fresh battlefields and spawn more soldiers for its army. I could see a few Wraiths just following a Hobgoblin tribe on the warpath, calling back the tormented spirits of the recently killed to haunt the devastation left in the War-band’s wake.

I believe the 2E shift to incorporealness was to simplify the types of undead into “Zombie-like” and “Ghost-like”. With Zombie group ranging from lesser skeletons and zombies to the mighty Revenant and the Ghost group going from simple harmless apparitions to the Dread Wraith. Making wraiths corporeal would essentially place them in the Zombie grouping and take a lot of power out of the Ghost grouping. They basically tried to give each “class” of monster a F through A tier. For those wondering, I place things like Vampires and Liches in their own group, I call it the “Sentient Undead” and it consists of any undead creature that is willingly/knowingly undead and can have an indefinite lifespan as one(Revenants don’t count in this group because of their 1 year time limit.).
@SithBy11
@SithBy11 3 года назад
Perhaps one could see the wraiths as both corporeal and incorporeal, and be come less corporeal the more damage is inflicted on their form
@draxthemsklonst
@draxthemsklonst 3 года назад
That is easy to conceptualize, and intuitive in how the corporeality vs incorporeality is determined by the hit points. Novel, yet simple & clean idea.

I wouldn’t say there is an equivalency between Tolkien’s wraiths and DND wraiths. The Nazgul, especially the Witch King of Angmar, are really more akin to Death Knights than they are to the actual wraiths. Sauron is more like some kind of archfiend, most likely a devil.
@jacobfreeman5444
@jacobfreeman5444 3 года назад
The Nazgul may be wraiths but not all wraiths are Nazgul. The Nazgul were just special because of the process that led them to where they are, not the actual end result. Also death knights have fairly strong wills and will follow their own goals. The Nazgul are famously enslaved to Sauron's will. They have the autonomy to decide how to do so but they literally cannot act of their own accord. His ambitions are their ambitions. So yeah, they are more than just physically insubstantial. As to Sauron...he is more like a demon. The devils may be evil but they still have a role in creation. They add to it. Ultimately demons bring ruin to all they touch, like Sauron did.
@redtexan7053
@redtexan7053 3 года назад
@@jacobfreeman5444 Sauron’s status I feel ultimately comes down to when we’re looking at him. If we’re talking about Sauron in the 3rd Age, absolutely he is a demon. He’s only a shell of his former self, with no personality, and motivated purely by spite. But any time before this and we encounter a categorically different being. The Sauron of the 1st and 2nd Ages is a neurotic, bureaucratic tyrant obsessed with rules, organization, and central planning to the point of micromanagement. This is 100% the description of a devil.
@jacobfreeman5444
@jacobfreeman5444 2 года назад
@@redtexan7053 Coming back to this I agree. There is even some precedent for devils to fall into being demons, so Sauron certainly could have made such a jump.

I think the most important aspect of a wraith is their ability to drain life-force 氣 and regenerate its hit points. Corporeal or incorporeal is inconsequential.
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 5 лет назад
Agreed. I also love the idea of the barbarian smashing it with a massive warhammer and the body just flying apart but the Wraith is still there, blinking red eyes at the sudden freedom from the burden of a corporeal body.
@UCSPanther20
@UCSPanther20 5 лет назад
I would consider wraiths as incorporeal as it is an old synonym for "Ghost" and was used in folklore as the name of a ghostly imagine of someone that would appear shortly before or after their death. As a DnD undead, the idea of a wraith as a black hole of negative energy and formed from the souls of evil characters who are unable to be taken to Hell is a good horror concept. For example, I can imagine an encounter with a wraith who was a tyrant's chief executioner in life, and was legendary for his atrocities and depravity. A wraith of a character based on Lavrentiy Beria or Heinrich Himmler would make a terrifying foe.

I have used a number of these in my games. The most notable was a noble who got assassinated by a party member (evil noble doing all kinds of bad), kept coming back as a wraith until the party was finally able to trap the undead spirit into a gemstone and cast it away. The gem was later found and set into a greataxe as an adornment. When it was enchanted, it awoke the wraith spirit and added a level draining touch to the weapon needing to be fed every fed days or it feeds on the owner.
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 5 лет назад
Yikes! That is a great recurring villain. I would have a famous yet distant prophet or soothsayer or village palm reader inform the party with a cryptic statement that warns of the Axes Dark Heart feeding it's freedom... if it keeps on draining life, it will eventually gain the power to break free of the gem and rise again, or perhaps animate a corpse as a Lich, the gem now serving at its phylactery!

Perfect video. I have almost nothing to say. You got the red pin-prick eyes, you got the etherealness, you have the congealed negative energy aspect. This is EXACTLY what wraiths are. I always loved how they can just appear from anywhere in a dungeon as they can just float seamlessly through the walls, floor or ceilings. A powerful intelligent undead with the wraiths as backup is always a high lvl encounter: Vampires, Liches even Mummies. Those same wraiths could have even been the undead's companions at one point.

7:45 Once again, I hate to nitpick but..... _puts on outfit from the White and Nerdy video_ ....The Witch-King is a Nazgul(It means RingWraith in the language of Mordor), and the thing he rides is called a “Fell Beast”. The Fell Beasts Of Mordor are a class of monster from Tolkien’s world. Based of his writings they are either Wyverns or Pterosaurs that we’re corrupted by Morgoth’s(Sauron’s boss and God of Evil) power in the late phases of creation. There’s a popular theory that says the Fell Beasts are corrupted Great Eagles, but Tolkien’s out of book writings disprove that. Most people get confused by this due to Gandalf’s line “as the Nazgul flies”. It makes most people who’ve only watched the movies think he’s talking about beast and not the rider, when in fact he’s referring to the Death Machine that’s piloting the not-a-dragon. And yes, I will do this every time you call a Fell Beast a Nazgul. It’s a pet peeve of mine. Its like calling a horse a Knight just because that’s what rides it.

Interesting video AJ. Never knew about the wight-wraith-specter connection. I've always enjoyed home-brewing incorporeal weapons for undead, drawing from the Border Ethereal and Plane of Shadow. Such weapons ignore material, non-magical armor, and only strike the the living and other undead. The tanky fighters get a nasty surprise when one of these bad boys strikes THROUGH their armor, and they only get their DEX bonus! Of course, bracers of defense, cloaks and rings of protection, Shield spells, and so on all provide full defense against them.

Dementors have some light differences in that they're a different species of creature, not an undead. That and there's no need for all of the "weak to holy water" and "weak to silver" crap because Harry Potter is a much more succinct piece of literature where there's no real focus on something like combat unless it comes up naturally in the plot, so spending time describing fighting several dementors was just something that never came up. Mostly because nobody was stupid enough to put themselves in that kind of situation. There's also the fact that the only similar trait a Dementor has to a wraith is the ability to 'siphon lifeforce' which is actually a lot more vague than what Dementor actually does; simply consume a person's soul. The biggest reason would've been related to that, as the process through which Dementors eat souls is related to powerful themes in Harry Potter. Having to do with subtle and few descriptions on negative and positive emotions and their overall importance. Oh, and the Dementors don't really have that big of a role in the overall story. To summarize, she needed a facsimile of the wraith without a bunch of their normal traits and adjusted versions of their most notable. At that point, calling them something different just feels more honest to me.

As soon as the tadpole is fully booted up, it takes control and transforms the host into a victim. Otherwise, we’ve just witnessed Illithid evolution. They’ve adapted to convert hosts at an accelerated rate to mitigate vulnerability during gestation.

AJ Pickett Something else I’ve realized is that since this is an official 5E game, they now have to make an official ruling on whether psionics/psychics are a form of magic for 5E or not. They’ve kind of left it ambiguous up to this point by still calling Mind Flayers psionic but offering no mechanic or differentiation between what constitutes psionic powers from spells that deal psychic damage or effect the mind of the target. We get to see how they deal with it in a campaign where Illithids are the main antagonists. Does a Ring Of Mind Shielding stop Mind Flayers from breaching one’s mind? Does an Anti-Magic Field prevent psionic abilities? Does Dispel Magic cure Ilithid mind control the same way it does for charm spells like Dominate Person? These are the questions that come to my mind now that the Mind Flayers are taking the main stage for the new game.

Hmmmm. In light of this then wouldn't the wraith be a halfway point between corporeal and incorporeal? Their sheer power and presense giving them a physical presense but not actually needing any body that may be left over? Indeed, almost like a wights final form. I can see them being resistant to any normal weapon, requiring magical, silvered or...maybe even cold iron? Not all being who fear the touch of cold iron are faerie.

I put a picture of him fighting there in the video :) There was a lot of plot going on between Gandalf, Saruman and Sauron before it all boiled over into open warfare, with Sarumon hunting for the One Ring just as hard as Sauron was and Gandalf cautiously manipulating events to kind of keep Saruman distracted from his search. In the end, Saruman's fate was inevitable.

As you can imagine I love this video A.J.!!! Lol I exclusively have played a rouge/assassin PC in every D&D game I've ever played and learned a long time ago that the wraiths abilities go great with such characters. Also those abilities pretty much make your PC overpowered in most cases and you can have a lot of fun messing with the DM in combat encounters. Nothing more enjoyable than watching a power mad DM pulling their hair out when you've got a ring of etherealness and can just waltz thru an encounter with higher level CR monsters they thought they could hide sweet loot behind as a way to taunt players. Incorporial movement followed up by backstabs with an energy draining dagger can make most fights a breeze. And yes I'm aware it throws the game off but let's be real, we've all had that one sadistic asshat DM that loved making the game about himself and forgot we're all there for fun and deserved everything you could do to mess with them. Cheers and looking forward to your next video.🍻

This begs the question, with so many super natural predators, that require specialized weapons to kill them, how would anyone survive out side of being a magic slinger themselves or knowing one. Do families hire the local wizard, druid, or clarric to fortify the house hold or is it like in the Dresden files where a threshold, that blocks spirits and spell casters from entering or using magic, naturally develops.

The forces of light are EXTREMELY powerful, most of the time we don't mention that the worlds are a patchwork of protectorates, with Harpers, Lords Alliance, adventuring guilds, clerical orders, knights, good-aligned races that are less common but no less active than the civilised races, the aquatic races, outer planar travellers, Underdark races, and the frequent two and fro traffic from people being raised from the dead to carry on their quests... it is a dynamic world and just as dangerous for the forces of evil, more so because they don't generally benefit from teamwork and alliances.
@jacobfreeman5444
@jacobfreeman5444 5 лет назад
Also remember the stronger creatures are more rare. This is why it is such a big deal to discover a lich. This is a singularly powerful being that most have little to no knowledge about. And evil beings tend to be backstabbing. Thus evil tends to be self limiting. Your common person almost never meets anything more interesting than a kobold or goblin. Sides, why would most people go looking for trouble? When a beastie they can't beat eats someone most would just agree to not go to where they found it anymore. Having adventurers show up to deal with it would almost a god given miracle.

Great video and thank you for doing it! I home-brewed the sh^t out of this monster. My campaigns involve a LOT of story focus, more so than combat, so the monsters have grey areas. You perfectly followed what I did between Wights and the non-corporeal Wraiths. Thanks AJ, but originally the wraith was in corporeal in the foster ed. AD&D. Check out some of the old first ed adventures by TSR. I know it was originally corporeal in the old D&D booklets. But TSR was using the incorpreal for years before 2nd edition. Also look into the old Iron Crown Enterprises Lord of the Rings. They where the one gaming company that kept to Tolkien's original view of the Ring Wraiths. I say this because there were lesser wraiths that weren't has powerful; usually created by being killed by the Nazguls weapons.
