This movie was ABSOLUTELY worth every penny and fun for the whole family. I sincerely hope there is a sequel or at least many more D&D movies like this with the same directors, writers, etc.
It's fun, and quirky, and action filled for the whole family. This is a film with an appreciation of good story telling with an excellent script, cast, comedy and action. A definite good night out to relax, and to get lost in story and fantasy for everyone.
Surprisingly a great film. I thought the pacing was great, the combo of characters were fantastic, and they tied up all the plot lines from what I can tell. Fun movie for sure!
As a 5e Dungeon Master and Screenwriter, this movie was a perfect combination of the table and screen. Im also currently running Out of the Abyss which is the published adventure which features that big fat red dragon Thembrechaud
@@MrMartinSchou Paladins are just this kind of people, mentally as flexible as stone golems :D :D Im a DM and went to see the movie with my fiends at the table (one of them a Harper Bard ;D ) and had a blast.
That dragon was so funny. Clever and witty inverting of a typical 'scary' dragon. Made me think of poor old fatty Puss in Boots in Shrek Forever After.
I barely caught a glimpse of Eric when they were shown in the arena the first time and immediately knew they were giving us adults a walk down memory lane
I played tons of D&D set in this same 'Forgotten Realms' world setting, and read even more of the novels based in the same world. Hearing them drop references like Faerun, Icewind Dale, Underdark, Waterdeep, Elminster, and all the other easter eggs jammed into it, was pretty satisfying. It would be amazing if this franchise became a cinematic universe much like the MCU. There is so much lore to explore ...
I enjoyed it when they were like "the vault is protected by Mordenkainen's...something." and Simon just went "Mordenkainen? Well we're fucked." I'm of course paraphrasing, but it was hilarious.
It's an excellent movie. It should be performing better at the box office and that is not fair at all. Hopefully it will make more mony once released to DVD, streaming, etc. A second part would be nice to have.
Or even without an actual sequel, it would be nice to see a message sent to movie-makers that not everything has to be a Marvel movie or some other Disney remake.
i took my kids to watch this with me. dragged them to the theater and in the end i cried and they laughed and told me they enjoyed it too. now i'm eating mac and cheese. Good times.
My dnd party went in place of playing on Saturday. We honestly had quite low expectations and went just to have fun. all of us thought it was great laughing the entire time. We some people brought significant others and spouses who didn’t play and they equally loved it. Over just good wholesome fun
Yeaaaa that was so unexpected but when i saw them i knew instantly who they were!!!! I had a hardcover AD&D story book i read several times like 35 years ago haha
A couple of other references: One of the other parties that fight in the stadium are dressed as the 90’s cartoon characters. The sorcerer uses prestidigitation to create a Fresh Cut Grass smell to distract the townsfolk. Fresh Cut Grass is the name of a character from Critical Role’s D&D livestream While the bard doesn’t cast any spells, he does inspire the others to continue on their journey. Inspiration is an ability bards regularly use.
I was talking to my wife about it after the movie and I think Chris Pine was playing a high-charisma rogue, rather than a bard. He never cast a spell, but he did get a couple sneak attacks with his lute. He probably took expertise in Persuasion and Deception.
Just watched this with a group of friends 12 of us actually. We loved it, my wife went who is not a D&D player and thought it was a good watch. For the rest of us, it was an AMAZING movie! Those who play or have played D&D this is a must watch! I love the characters in the arena cage paying homage to the D&D TV cartoon from the late 80's early 90's. They were all wearing the same gear from the cartoon.
Being an old school D&D player I had my doubts but the movie was a blast! Scenes were epic and story interesting. Seeing an Owlbear on the screen was very cool!
I haven’t got a single bit of knowledge on D&D but I think I would watch this movie, the trailer didn’t look too bad, to me it’s something different than what’s going on atm, like I said I don’t know the lore so it’s a completely fresh take for me, I have nothing to go on and compare it too! Let’s see if Heavy Spoilers can convince me
As a long time DnD player this movie was incredible! There were so many little easter eggs and nods I know I didn't see them all the first time. Have to go back and see it again and again.
Loved the film, and understood why for this film why they didn't have CP's character or the Druid use magic. But I do hope if they make a sequel that we see them at least start developing their magical abilities.
@@kieran10202 The stat block for Edgin on dndbeyond shows him as a bard and he even has spells and all that. But him being a rogue makes more sense to me. If they make another movie with them I hope they clarify his character more either showing him use magic or being more rogue-ish
@kieran10202 totally agree. They should have had edgin use magic as a bard, if he is a bard. Great character in a fun good movie but I feel like he was under utilized regardless of his class
After 40 years of D&D I was very nervous but I loved it! Expectations were low given the unfortunate history of the previous attempts but they delivered something for the newbies and the OGs alike! Will definitely go see it again with my current party! Tangent Force goes to the movies! 😁🤘
This was a great movie for individuals that like D&D or RPGs, families or even couples. It's a wonderful movie *BECAUSE* it's not a sequel, remake, or even like other movies. It's unique in that it's a heist movie, but the stakes arent "we just dont get the money" like an Oceans movie. If they fail, the main character would lose his daughter and the world would be conquered by evil necromancers. What heist movie have you seen that's also pretty much an Avengers movie?
I really enjoyed it. Lol the NPC joke completely went over my head when I watched it but now that you brought it up I’m laughing my head off. I’m no big D&D fan, to be honest I went to see it because of Rege-Jean Page (oh my such a crush 😳) but was overjoyed at how entertaining it truly was.
I have to say!!! Michell Rodrigez WOW! What a fantastic job staying in character! What a fantastic movie altogether! I hope they all come back for another. This movie made us all LOL😅
As a sword and sorcery film nut, I enjoyed it. As someone who plays DnD truly loved tons of this movie. It felt like watching a DM plan a campaign in their head taking in account how players always seem to endlessly screw the plans up, and just go off cuff but still manage to clutch it in the end. It leaves a multitude of options open for a second film without directly needing the cast of this one to pull it off.
We saw it in the initial limited release and LOVED it! I played some D and D when I was in college and enjoyed it so the movie was a breath of fresh air! It had great characters, familiar monsters and stories, and didn’t take itself so seriously. In this when when so many movies are overly serious about themselves, this one was just fun and the actors clearly had a blast with it.
MAJOR EASTER EGG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i guess i must be a GEEK , i played D&D in the 80's and the cartoon was somthing i was into no one has picked this up ..?????? MAJOR EASTER EGG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the original charaters from the 80.s D&D cartoon the Cavalier the Ranger the Magician the Thief the Barbarian make a "cameo" in the maze you see them all in the cage and bit before horn is the same plot device from cartoon " Venger's HORN " i am sure the directors put this in as fan service
Absolutely did not go over my head! In fact, there is a featurette that shows the maze scene and they are all clearly visible throughout. Kind of a crazy thing to spoil in a featurette, but...well...I'm making the comment on a Heavy Spoilers video!
FSK as soon as I saw green robes, and a red cloak I knew it was them. It was a pleasant omaj for us 80s babies 😅😅😅. I wish they had more Saz Tam hopefully there will be a pt2 or better yet bring in some of the well-known forgotten realm charcters to fight him.
If you haven't listened to it yet, the creators go over what the ending would have been. Fans even made a cartoon of it, Requiem. Here on RU-vid somewhere. Better than the car commercial ending.
I absolutely loved this movie! Saw it opening night in full IMAX glory, with a packed house of enthusiastic movie lovers. Most surprising: my wife also enjoyed the film! It’s funny, the pace just whips along, and has a heart.
I love the use of pratical effects. i saw this movie twice and I am going to see again. Good thing is there is soooo many good storylines they can use. Can't wait to see more of it.
There was a post creds scene? I saw it 2 weeks ago at the many pre screen dates but didn't really think it would have one of those. I guess I should expect every movie gonna have one.
@@thecunninlynguist It's nothing much, not even a spoiler, the dead guy they walked away from just wanted someone in the audience to ask him a fifth question.
Watched this film with my kids on Father's Day, which is - as anybody who's seen the film knows - the perfect day to watch it. Absolutely the best film I've seen in decades. Total surprise.
The Speak with Dead spell grants the corpse a “semblance of its former life” allowing it to “only” speak the answers, and the spell lasts for as long as 10 minutes. It is a funny joke though to just leave the guy there.
I've never played D&D yet I lived this film, it had a good story, good action (and didn't leave all the action to the last 1/3 like most films do) and had good comedy and good characters 👍
After watching n Reading the comment's I'm Defo gonna watch this! I haven't got a clue about D & D and Half remember the cartoon in the 80s/90s!? So Yeah Nice One n Thanks! Cheers 🍻
Pleasantly surprised how fun this was. I do have a soft spot for Jeremy Irons and Thora Birch but D&D movies had been pretty shit until now. Even Justice Smith who was horrible in Dick Pik, was pretty good here.
The thing that I recently learned that was a *fun fact*? Chris Pine is a son of the guy who some of a certain age might remember played the boss of John and Ponch from C.H.I.P.S. TV show from back in the day, Robert Pine 🤯
It was a movie written by people who ACTUALLY PLAYED D&D... which is a rarity in modern fantasy movies since a lot of fantasy directors state "I have never read or watched anything affiliated with this property, I think this makes me more able to make a movie based on this..." And we every time end up with an absolute shitshow...
Yes but I'm left wanting to know more about that _third_ and rather less fortunate party. In fact, It'd be fun to roll up those characters for some players, knowing that, at some point in the future, they will end their career in that arena. :)
i kinda wish the post credit scene was the core parties actors geting up from a DnD table with one of the directors as the DM and thanking him for a great session however i am still happy with what we got
If your party didnt Banter like the cast then you arent having fun playing D&D. I know me and my friends always talk mad shit and have fun with the plans and attacks we deal with. Loved how the cast really felt like old friends at times and especially love Jonathan!
I think Xenk Yendar, was a DMPC. As he acts more as a guide that joins the PC, and while he gets his moment, he doesn't steal the limelight form the main party.
Looks like the creative team didn't want to confuse those with no knowledge of D&D. So Simon, as the Wild Magic Sorcerer was the obvious caster. They kept Doric to wildshape as the most popular Moon Druid feature, Holga with the rage and Tavern Brawler feat, and Edgin with the Persuasion, Deception, and Bardic Inspiration aspects. Since 4 of the 5 party members, when DM PC Xenx the Paladin is there, can cast spells, they didn't want magic to solve everything. Also, the Thayan blade apparently isn't something that can be healed with lower level spells and only the 9th level True Resurrection spell can bring someone back from it.
8.5/10 is exactly what this movie deserves in my opinion. It could probably have been cut 15-20 minutes short relatively easily, but I was surprised at the spectacular pacing so that's not the biggest downside. Sophia Lillis' character Doric was very underutilized and that was a mistake. Less campy dialogue, more character development for the Emerald Enclave Moon Druid would have increased my personal rating.
Hello. Can you please explain to me during the Maze Scene of the movie wherein The Magician (wearing green, Barbarian Small guy, The Archer and the Invisible purple woman) is there? I love the D&D tv cartoon series before. I thought they are the original ones and why they are only extras on the film?
