@Adam Davis 1) I barely know the circumstances around that and from what I do know, I thought that issue had been resolved. 2) Even if that was something I was up to speed on, it's not tied into this movie in any way. Something I noticed and appreciate about this movie is how it utilizes the DnD campaign formula so well in the movie. It feels like a fun adventure, with good humor, fantastic characterization and plot development, and as you mentioned the structure of the movie is basically a DnD campaign. THATS how you use IP right there. Very excited about this film
@awsomeman350
@awsomeman350 Год назад
Im so glad they went the route of the feel of a DND campaign with friends, but not the actual content or lore of the game. imgaine if this was completely series and true to the source material. it would feel like a dnd world, but not a dnd campaign
@leestamper4627
@leestamper4627 Год назад
To be honest I’m exactly the opposite. I’ve played plenty of DnD but taking the jokey not taking it serious nature of a play session and setting it to a film feels the movie is a parody of a story that has never been told. Like if last of us was about playing a video game instead of the story. Definitely putting the lore directly on screen would have been unwatchable but I wish they just found stories they wanted to tell within the setting if they want to use the ip kinda like how Arcane did. That said it’s just a subjective opinion and hope you enjoy the movie!

All the other reviews have been positive too. The only negative criticism I have heard is the shoddy CGI in some places but that's just a minor nitpick and not a real criticism cuz even many recent superhero movies had weak CGI. D&d is a mid budget film and they just couldn't afford the gamble of spending more on CGI especially after the last D&d movie bombed.

I’m not a gamer, but the clips Dan showed reminded me of those movies too. Even though I don’t have a D&D background, it really gives me joy when a movie or tv show manages to get it right for an IP that has such a huge fan base. Not only is there such a positive vibe in the theater, but when that many people love the original IP I’ve come to realize that is indicative that there’s something special about it. One of the biggest surprises in recent memory. I have been able to predict punchlines in comedies for so long, and in D&D even if you see it coming they still executed it very well. The movie was able to make everything feel familiar without needing to give audience tutorials. I haven't had so much fun watching a movie in awhile. Even some of the jokes being spoiled in the trailer, they still manage to not fall flat during the screening. The writing was impressive and the plot pacing was fantastic. @@FellaGuy2 I mean Bards, Sorcerers and Paladins focus on Charisma, and only the Paladin has a use for Strength. I feel its quite possible, the people pusing that narrative are the same crowd that gets upset any time there's a female in an action role. They do show some of the big action moments in the trailer. It doesn't quite show the character conflicts and the motivations of the leader of the team as well as what the characters' journeys will be. Pine is, and will always be, my favorite Hollywood Chris. He's got the talent, the swag, the vocals, the humor, and the self-awareness that makes him seem much more relatable and down-to-earth than his other Chris competition (with Evans a close second.) Sure, he's a nepo-baby, but he isn't afraid to publically admit his faults and similarly doesn't care if he's conventionally stylish or hip. Plus, let's not forget he's a great voice actor (ex: Rise of the Guardians) and does one heck of a car commercial. All this is to say, I was hype for D&D right from the moment I knew he was cast as a Bard - but now with this review, I'm even more excited for the entire thing (especially to see Pine get some more love!)

I think a lot of people underrated Chris Pine. I can't remember who said it, I was reading an article going back through his films and they were talking about how he's become a lead but he seems to have a lot more fun playing in things like Smokin' Aces or Horrible Bosses 2. Basically he's a character actor with the looks of a leading man. It was one of the best summations of the actor I can remember. He's able to poke fun at himself, he doesn't ever feel self conscious about looking silly or playing against type. For awhile they were trying to put him into more typical leading man fare but to me it feels like his more recent work is letting him play around a little more and he looks like he's having a blast doing so in this movie.

I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about this movie. My friends saw an early screening and they said it was a very fun watch. I’ll catch it when it releases soon.

I find it funny that many see Chris pine as the weakest of the Hollywood Chris's. Imho he has always been the most charismatic and dare I say...most willing to take on deeper roles. This movie had me laughing out loud. 10/10

I'm glad this looks good. I can imagine it was a difficult pitch. It would appear that some people are tiring of superheroes, so there was an opportunity for something new, but to go to magic and fantasy? That was what was in before superheroes, and "commit to the artistic vision"? Rather than the prince of persia/clash of the titans/gods of Egypt garbage? I am now quite hyped for this one

I got to see an advanced showing this weekend and my friend said the same thing! That it almost feels like they had watched something from years ago where they just had an absolute blast with it. I absolutely loved this one. It was just sooo much fun in a movie, and the whole theater was having fun too!

I went to see this today, largely based on your enthusiastic review. I thought it was really fun. It was cool to see a fantasy movie that, even though it is inspired by existing IP, featured all new characters and a new story. There was a lot of creativity in the action, the magic, and the way things were shot. I enjoyed the humor, especially the parts with Rege-Jean Page. As far as specific moments, I especially liked the fat dragon, and using the portal into the cart was cool too. It would be fun to see more stories in this world, especially if they bring back the same heroes but put them in a new part of the world with new challenges and adventures.

Best guess as to why it's releasing now, is they're ramping up the promotion for the next edition of D&D coming in 2024.

I am totally on board but, again based of how I ingest media in 2023, I had NO IDEA it was coming out already. So, a big win for Paramount that you are reviewing it. It means now I know it's coming out and I may venture into the theater for the first time in a while.

I laughed a lot throughout this film. Can't seem to pin down which Chris Pine joke you are referencing though! Also, I used to scream Pine during the Hollywood Chris debates back in the SJU/Movie Fights days. Glad y'all came around.

As a DnD player I'm surprisingly hopeful for how this film will capture the energy of the game, as goofy and corny as it might seem. I look forward to seeing fantasy mayhem that does act ridiculous enough that you could come up with it on the fly alongside your party of friends. Looks like genuine fun and I hope DnD fans don't dodge it immediately because it's not instantly as dark, epic or serious as LOTR but instead plays with the charming fun of the tabletop game.

Me and my partner walked out of a screening last night, about half way through. Which we've both never done before. We didn't find it a blast, the script wasn't funny, Chris Pine sucked, it didn't come together for us, it felt like a film I would watch on Netflix randomly on a Sunday afternoon and turn it off after 10 minutes, some of the effects earlier in the film were frightfully bad. This is our opinion and we're both super annoyed because we were really looking forward to this!

true you dont need to have played ad&d to understand the movie. but for those who have played you can easely recognise the game actions and creatures. like the displacers beast, the mimic, the gelatinous cube and the various spells and the realm they are in. for me watching the movie is like im back in a roleplay moment. and out of the 4 movies that was made this is the one that comes the closest to the real thing

I am really happy that this film is getting positive reviews. My big worry is that it is going to be released to close to John Wick 4 and that will kill the box office for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, as I suspect they will have a similar audience demographic.
