Since dragons are magical elementally-attuned creatures that can adapt and thrive in just about any environment, there are as many dragons as there are biomes both mundane and exotic as well as numerous other variants which can emerge under special circumstances.

As many as their are grains of sand upon every beach in the world. D&D has a multiverse with a dozen plus near infinite universes. The world you're playing in is just 1 world of millions with portals or spelljammers being the only methods to go from 1 to the next and all without actually leaving that particular universe. With that said, just about every planet in every universe has chromatic and metallic dragons. We don't think of them as "common" since humanoids are so overpopulated everywhere.
