No i agree with you. On initial spray i get a strong lemon wasabi / pepper spice from it that actually kind of hurts my nose .

I love Icon too. But I find the pleasing citrus scent of the modern dat Edition is just right for the warm summer. I agree with your thoughts on Drakkar - it's a pleasing, sporty scent these days - not quite the monster of 30-years ago.

@@TheChapsGuide In fairness, Dunhill Edition is still good value as it holds its own against other citrus-fresh fragrances in that low price range. But do check out Rochas Moustache EDT when your Edition bottle runs out, as the initial (short) citrus burst is on the same level of Eau Sauvage EDT and maybe even Acqua di Parma Colonia.

Thats true, but they have well and truly evolved from that period now. The fragrances are surprisingly well put together and pleasingly cheap. I very much like the Icon (Silver) fragrance, but this Edition is from another era and performs rather well as a summer/warm month EDT.

For most of their history Dunhill was in fact an upscale tobacconist specializing in flawless pipes, custom blended tobacco, high quality cigars and cigarettes, as well as other luxury goods and smokers’ requisites. They had Royal Warrants as suppliers of tobacco products for much of the twentieth century, and only recently relinquished their association with tobacco (with the exception of cigarettes, which are still being sold under licence of the Dunhill name by BAT). Dunhill’s foray into fragrances began as far back as 1934 - a full fifty years before ‘Edition’ - when Mary Dunhill, a professional perfumer, released the House’s first fragrance, ‘Dunhill For Men’, which was originally a bespoke scent. It is still produced today but isn’t always easy to find. It closely resembles the more readily available (and cheaper) TABAC ORIGINAL Eau de Cologne (1959) which the German firm Maϋrer + Wirtz based on Dunhill For Men after consultation with Mary Dunhill (hence, the name: Tabac). The Dunhill is noticeably richer - even in its current formulation - but the two perfumes basically share a similar DNA. So much so, that in the dry-down, after a few hours’ wear, I’m hard pressed to tell which is which.

Glad you are enjoying my musings on chaps stuff. I always undertake research for my fragrance reviews (as well as employing the nose) and House of Dunhill is very much a favourite. I have availed myself of their club at Bourdon House in London on a few occasions and I am a bit of fan of their ethos and tradition (my head is easily turned by a British heritage brand). I have a folder full of old fragrance ads that I use for my reviews, which I have to say, make far better watching than any commercials of the modern era.
