Dunki Movie Review by Sucharita Tyagi -
Is it a slapstick comedy? Is it a comedic look at tragic events? Is it a tragedy addressing foreign policies? Is it hard-hitting questions asked comedically? Dunki, to its own detriment, is all the above, and then some.
The first hour of Dunki looks tragically, astonishingly callous when you hold it against the rest of the film. The first few sequences generate fun intrigue - why is Taapsee at a hospital? Who is hardy and why do they desperately want to go back to him? Why isTaapsee the travel agent telling these people they can't get Indian VISAs when they’re clearly Indian? You want to know. Loud jaunty music underscores these goofball antics which then shift to Punjab a flashback. The comedy stretches for far too long. An inexplicable 4th wall breaking voice-over starts dumping exposition in each sequence, characters are introduced and then maintained as “types”. The Punjabi are punajbing, Shahrukh Khan says “oh ji papa ji”, and “mera plan toh sun lo”, constantly dialed to 11, his acting choice hinging on little more than the Punjabi bade loud hote hain stereotype. Manu is besties with one guy who works as a barber, the other sells salwars to ladies, never explaining why in a 90s Punjab small town she is never seen with women. As long as the plot progresses, details don’t matter. Essentially everything, up until the interval, has kind of a fake plasticky sheen one sees in those lyra lyra anytime anywhere advertising.
1 scene when we FIRST meet Hardy, he gets off a train with mega excitement, gets shoved by a man, his mithaai falling to the floor. Before he can gather it, some kids start singing the national anthem, Hardy stops and stands upright. Another man steals the laddoos and leaves, as Hardy in a moment of nationalism allows what’s his to be taken away in front of his eyes. Therein lies the movie Dunki could have been, aap dekh ke bataao.

Been a fan of SRK for films like DDLJ and KHNH. Seeing him in his recent avatars, heavy use of de-aging CGI, filters, makeup, etc., just isn't cutting it for me. I want to see him look and play his age in films, acting opposite beautiful female costars in their 50s. Will keep waiting and keep hoping. I love this about Hollywood. They don't have an obsession with their stars, wherein the actor is given more importance than the character he/she is playing, or there is a constant effort to show the hero younger than he is. They write such lovely roles for the actors even in their 50s, 60s, 70s.

@@TheTwara What about Tom Cruise? He has kept his body in great shape and pushes it, same as our Khans. Does great action in films even at his age. I have no problem with that. TC, however, acts his age in films, not a CGI younger plastic avatar. It helps that his face has aged well too so is still a treat for fans. Also the action is not our gissa pitta kind, old hero fighting 10-20 goons freestyle.

Dunki is being written off by some who consider it sub-par purely because it’s a RKH product. But in the post-pandemic Bollywood era that has reserved BO success largely for mind-numbing action flicks, Dunki brings back the emotion in Bollywood. But surely it’s a subject that requires elongated storytelling and merits an OTT-backed web series. A 3-hour long movie can’t possibly encompass the arduous journeys and ordeals of multiple characters. Despite the shortcomings, the movie is still worth a watch and quite entertaining yet moving, bold and disturbing in parts. When we dismiss such stories, we effectively run the risk of perpetuating the post-Pandemic trends that encourage production houses invest in projects to pander primarily to the incel audiences.

These so called “critics” fail to understand one fundamental point that is , why a director (particularly of a caliber of Rajkumar Hirani) makes any movie. His/ her intention is purely to entertain the audience. If a director wants serious commentary on plight and pleasures of people , he/she would simply make a low budget documentary on subject of DUNKI !!! Why will she/he make a movie !!🤷🤷🤷🤷 So when it is decided that a cinema with an intention of entertainment shall be made , then there will be naturally some cinematic liberties taken (we conveniently tend to forgive the outlandish idea of Tom Cruise climbing Burj Khalifa and bash Indian directors for their cinematic liberties mercilessly). In the end , did the movie make me laugh and cry ? YES !! Did the movie stayed with me due to the string performances from SRK, Taapsi and Vicky Kaushal and great music ?? YES !! After son many stupid action movies and mindless “mass masaala” where I could take my family together to a cinema theatre to watch a movie , I was so relieved that I could take them all together and enjoy DUNKI !!! Then just because few small things didn’t add up I won’t care much. To help with what these pseudo intellectual types talk. Go and watch the movie with entire family. ❤🎉

I do agree with your opinion about this movie but come on! The movie has the biggest superstar of Hindi Cinema where the woman is literally the main character and you still don't praise it for what it did in terms of writing the female character. It had one of the strongest female characters in major Indian cinema and you make a point of pointing out the film's other shortcomings. You might say so what, "kuch Ehsan Nahi Kiya", but you went after Animal and it's director for the kind of movie it was but you didn't do the same for Dunki for what it was in terms of a well written female character. Looks like your selective opinion only applies to something that is wrong but not for something that is right.

@drashyagoel5782 8 месяцев назад
I don’t know what movie you watched, but SRK was definitely more “main character” than Tapsee. For one thing, he definitely got the most screentime. For another, he’s doing all the savouring, while Tapsee just damsel-in-distresses her way through it.
@clinteastwood5269
@clinteastwood5269 8 месяцев назад
@@drashyagoel5782 That's where you are wrong, and your takeaway of Tapsee was just damsel in distress shows how you didn't understand the movie at all. SRK definitely has more screentime but he is there supporting other characters. Hardy and Manu are co-leads. It's not Hardy's story, not his journey. Tapsee is the fulcrum of the movie, it's her story, it's her journey. In today's time a female actor having an equally impactful role as a superstar is a huge deal. That's why I said the main character.

I watch a great movie, find it absolutely fantastic and then when I come to watch her review I find out I was completely wrong. There are so very few thought provoking movies made these days, and Dunki was such a fresh concept. But I feel like she can't do without finding flaws in every miniscule thing in any movie. So I'm not gonna watch her reviews from now. I loved the movie, made me laugh and cry and think a lot! I'd rather take that home than somebody poop on my parade by telling me how a "perfect" movie is supposed to be in fancy vocab. They made a great refreshing movie and srk & tapsee were so good in it.. it's as simple as that!

Tapsee's character was not written well. I am unable to sympathise with her character at all. Watch Namaste England which has similar story and you kind of feel for Arjun Kapoor's character why he is so desperate to take the extreme risk to go to England to meet his wife. Dunki lacked that conviction

While I fully agree the screenplay was inconsistent, stretched and lacked depth. The film also made a lot of us seen who leave their home for a better life without truly knowing what lies ahead of them. Such is the delusion and desperation for a better life. They need not show why some of us don’t get employed in India. Both money and respect are highly dependent on getting a job abroad in many rural areas of the country. The movie made me tear up multiple times and reminded me of my uncles and cousins who have spent decades away from their families. I do wish they spent more time exploring the ‘why’s’.
@okayaresd
@okayaresd 8 месяцев назад
India has competitiveness, we need a thick skin to survive here be it college or work but people aren't ready to accept that fact, they feel how can our own home country feel like this and thus move abroad knowing that they might confront the same twisted circumstances but atleast that's a foreign land so it's kind of obvious. No expectations from people who don't speak your language or look like you thus makes it easier for them to focus and work.

I’ve just watched the film and I have got to say that I found this film problematic on many levels. The biggest problem this film has is that it fails to convey a core message. In one token, it’s critical of foreign policy regarding strict immigration, and on the other token it’s trying to convince you not to leave as grass isn’t greener on the other side. Which one is it? It also spend far too long on the comedic first half, reducing the actual dunki journey to a largely inconvenient yet doable journey. The courtroom scene was infuriating and insults your intelligence. The emotional ties with these characters just simply do not land because their motivations to leave their homeland are arbitrary. Overall the film is formulaic and predictable. What a missed opportunity! I’m actually upset and how a RKH and SRK combo has resulted in this.

Usually I agree with most of your reviews but completely differ with this one. I agree that the screenplay could have been better but I don't think they wanted to make a documentary style dark and grim movie to focus on why the characters wanted to escape India and the journey to achieve that. For a lot of people living away from home in a foreign land, its always the better opportunities that attracts us..we don't leave because we will be unemployed in India. So if its hard for people to understand why people leave their own country when its not stricken by war, ask the countless Indians settled abroad. I really liked the movie. Its an important subject shown in a mainstream Bollywood movie in as much humane way as possible. And its a super good ensemble cast. SRK was incredible.

Maybe because people like sucharita belong to such an elite class of India they have never come across the middle class mentality of why "Going To abrod" is such a big deal in the Indian middle class... Besides she herself is proving the point as what has been said by SRV in the recent interview, these critics people can be called illiterate in a way bcs they need a background story to know why POOR , STUCK IN MENIAL JOBS , PANJABI were seeking the opportunity to go abroad From THE PANJAB (which is by the way most famous for having family members settled in abrod from every family) and Atlast having such a fluency in English its difficult for a critic to understand the pain of not being able to speak in English In our Country, she also fails to understand the directors point of view for presenting such a serious issue to the target audience which is the Large Middle class obviously need a comic presention and not some serious dark cinema which wont atract the mass Middle class of India.

When I saw the trailer and dig what Donkey Passes really about I was expecting to find an emotionally or heart broken background story that compel the people to migrate to Canada to find a better life. However Dunki failed to capture that story and which catapalusted into another When Harry Met Sally & Swadesh comical cocktail. The characters are shown as well to do and live a very jolly which becomes a problem when there is no story strong enough to elevate or supplement what forced them to take that life threatening illegal journey

You are right. Characters lead fairly comfortable basic lives, so to risk life and limb, for what! India, is not just Punjab, I hope the punjabis are aware of this. Look at the Keralites, they are all over India. In the same way the bunch in the film could have easily aspired and succeeded in in exploring more fulfilling opportunities and better lives for themselves in India itself. Surely, the odds of a relocation to south India or Mumbai, for example, would be far better than the odds of an illegal trip to Canada??!! The film never explained why they are so stupid! Instead of feeling emotionally connected, I felt like saying, "you deserve it for your stupidity and greed."

Bro the characters were not 'well to do' but their plight was presented in a light hearted way which is a Raju Hirani style of presenting serious issues with a touch of humor, remember Raju Rastogi of 3 idiots. His financial condition too was presented in a light hearted and comical way. But I do agree that Donkey route is a much vast subject and a deep issue to be catered in a 3 hour movie. It could have been made in a 2 part movie like Gangs of Wasseypur as they wanted to show their whole journey back home and taking Dunki route just being a part of it. This way they would have got a privilege of more screen time to elaborate each part in more detail. But I do beleive that Dunki will have a longer shelf life and will resonate more in the coming years as rewatching it will make its characters more familiar and relatable.

What is everyone talking about in this comment. I don't agree. It seems people don't read about real life issues in newspaper these days. Most of my friends who moved to canada or Dubai were from well to do family and they only followed the trend. Some even sold their land in crores just to move outside. They didn't lacked money. They just want to follow the society and status other follow. Similar way many Gujratis move to USA and then other who were earning in lakhs in India were never satified and followed their community to move to US. Some stopped business and some took loans in crores even though they had a proper business at home. Most of the people who died while crossing were said be from well to do family who only wanted to live a lavish lifestyle or were jealous of other people with better social status. They just wanted to prove they can go to US and buy iphones or big cars and give money to others. In college my friend sold his 1 year old Iphone 5 to a office worker who mentioned that reason for buying second hand iphone is that he can't afford a new one and most of his relatives and company workers have Apple products and sometimes makes fun of him for not having a good phone. Even when people are earning crores in India they don't want to stay here as proved in new survey which mentions how many millionaires have settled in foreign countries last year. And why do we think a person earning in lakhs will be satisfied with his life when their community is living a better life outside of India. Be it Gujratis, Punjabis or anyone from the south. There is no big reason, a simple reason is enough for a person to move outside of countries. You can see even though it was Britishers who ruled India, now our people talking more like Americans and their lifestyle and culture have influenced Indians too much. Even NRI's in India are considered god as we can see schools and temples are built in their names when NRI come back and donate money for the welfare of their community. You can see temples and many important building in names of NRI in Punjab, Gujrat and other regions of India. People just get inspired and aspire to become like them even if they have enough or more here in India they don't give up on idea of much better life. And this idea also fill pockets of real and also fraud agents. You can see how many posters of immigration agents are there in some areas of India. So people don't need to find excuse to go outside they just follow the trend. Most of the poor people who want to go US or Canada are from Nepal, Mexicans, Venezuelians and other regions. Poor Indians who go there are victims of agents. @@Anione111

I disagree with your review. I did think the movie jumped genre from slapstick comedy to dark too quickly. It did stretch a bit. I thought after they reached London it should have ended, it felt that it prolonged a bit after that point. But it was overall a very heart warming movie with lots of laughs and some tear jerking moments. Shahrukh khan is amazing as always. He is truly last of stars. Taapse did a fantastic job too. At the end of the day, it is just a movie. You are dissecting the movie a bit too much and that does spoil the fun. At the end of the day , a movie should make you laugh or cry. And, it did that. Content wise it was a better movie than Pathaan. It was amazing from that standpoint. I enjoyed my movie outing today!

Had it been a different filmmaker and a different leading actor, this movie would be judged differently. But I still maintain the current reviews are on point. @@ssdheeps2195 it's a very nonsensically written movie. Why didn't Vicky Kaushal get a tourist visa? Why is a man on army pension having trouble with visa? Where is the social, political or economic reasons? Why didn't Tapsee call back home in 25 years and talk to SRK who was there all along? If this is woke shit, I assume this is what Pakistani Hindus go through and them seeking refuge in India is also a similar joke to them. Also, I don't think you know movies well enough, and that is why you listed technical grounds but you can buy technically sound people in India for cheap. There are a dozen a dime trained technical crew members in India. Rather than a superficial criticism that "oh, why are Tapsee and SRK talking in front of a green screen", you question why the poor quality of research has gone into this movie by the director and writer team.

I take IELTS classes and let me give you a reality check here. Why aren't people looking for employment in their country? The question should be, where are the jobs? It's a lot of discrimination against the poor and the added nepotism in the job market only makes it worse. The students I teach are exactly like the characters in the movie. They are talented but are marginalized here. This is why they want to go abroad. I think the movie portrayed these things beautifully. This is not a film for the masses but those who are trying to go abroad at all costs, they'll resonate to it. There are faults in the film, but it's really good and a family film. I loved the film for its authentic message.

Truly well researched and written and exposing economic woes of India and why almost every family has a member running away from India to greener pastures. I wish all the Bangladeshis and Nepalis will take the Donkey route instead of Indian cities such Bengaluru. A very well thought out and researched by PK Hirani. No wonder the theaters are doubled every single day across India. Love the way Hirani showcases India and Indians so naturally authentic. Pure masterclass.

A lot of folks think fatphobia is just outward and obvious shaming. More often, the repulsion of fat bodies is how they are portrayed with subtext. Was it necessary that a goofy, silly character has to be fat? Is it crucial to his identity or to the plot or dialogues? It’s how they are depicted as objects to be laughed at, without much being said that adds to societal stigma. There was a reason why Guddi Maruti for instance was cast in typical roles in the 90s, how she’d be shown chasing after the hero who didn’t want her for instance. No one said anything about her weight. But it was obvious why she was an example of “why a hero would not want someone like her.”

YES !! Did the movie staye with me due to the strong performances from SRK, Taapsi and Vicky Kaushal and great music ?? YES !! After so many stupid action movies and mindless “mass masaala” where I could not take my family together to a cinema theatre to watch a movie , I was so relieved that I could take them all together and enjoy DUNKI !!! Then just because few small things didn’t add up I won’t care much. To hell with what these pseudo intellectual types talk. Go and watch the movie with entire family. ❤🎉 😊

I agree almost 100% with this entire review. I wanna also say that while I understand that some may miss the breakneck speed and cheekyness of the older "not reviews" on this channel, I absolutely adore the new format and pacing. This is so methodical and thoughtful, it has become the review I most look forward to after watching a movie! Back to the review itself, and really, Hirani's style of moviemaking in general, which I think is what sorta caught up with him in this movie in particular. There are moments in 3 idiots and in PK that foreshadow the problem this movie has. Moments of incredible shock and tragedy and injustice that are just sort of chucked at your face in the middle of what is for the most part goofy movies even though they have serious messages at their heart. But they are aspects, details, moments to punctuate the story -- they aren't THE story. In Dunki, you have a few moments like that, too. Moments that are so blunt that the bluntness itself appears to be the point, but there's little real substance or context beyond that. Those moments can't topple an entire movie, and don't in Dunki either, but Dunki doesn't just have tragic moments, it is a tragic STORY. And yet this entire story lacks convincing context! It's very odd, but the tendency is sort of visibly there already in Hirani's other work. Where I disagree a little with the review, then, is with the movie needing to pick a lane. I think the juxtaposition of humour and emotion and tragedy can work tremendously well. In this movie there are so many moments that are a finely tuned combination of all three at the same time, having you laugh at something only to see someone's facial expression or somebody pause, and the moment is given a different meaning. I think that's Hirani's strength, and I would even say it works the best it has ever done in this movie. It's not nearly as forcefully jarring here as it is in PK or 3 Idiots to me. I think everything with the english class manages to be hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. Of course thanks in huge part to Vicky's performance, but not exclusively. But the lack of storytelling when it comes to selling the urgency in the overarching plot of the movie is really damning. I think it somehow still almost works, because the performances are just so likeable and engaging on their own, and there are plenty of quirks and details that make you superficially attached. But there isn't a single major heartache and sacrifice in Dunki that is properly motivated or set up. You have to simply not think about it and get swept up in the movie magic of charismatic people and Pritam music. :) It could have been amazing, though. I think Hirani can happily operate in several lanes at once, but they need to be soundly constructed for it all to work in unison, and there he needs to improve.

I believe the topic of Donkey passes is a realtime persistent issue! So kudos to Raju Hirani for having the guts to initiate discussions about this sensitive yet important topic by making a movie on it. The problem with the movie was as some have pointed out is we are never really shown or no real hints are given as to why the characters choose to leave India and go and settle in a foreign land. But in reality I have met many people who for no valid reason want to settle in a foreign land just because they feel enchanted by the very idea of going abroad! So maybe some of the characters in the movie just wanted to go abroad just for the sake of it! But then I totally agree with the fact that the emotional quotient of the movie fell short of making us feel deeply for any character! PS- Kudos to Vicky Kaushal! Yet another amazing performance by him...

Dunki is a dangerous movie. It presents the idea that people are becoming refugees and seeking political asylum for the flimsiest financial or socio-economic or political reasons or even as a joke. Also, Vicky Kaushal's entire narrative is so nonsensical because everything he wanted could have been resolved with a tourist visa. There's so much fake tension, you just don't buy it. Tapsee could have called her home in the 25 years, she didn't. But they needed fake tension around Tapsee and SRK. Once given asylum, Tapsee could have also married SRK, and so on and on without him lying at all. Also, SRK is a man on an army pension. He should have little trouble going to the UK, post retirement at an early age. Anyone who vaguely understands what the subject matter is, would realise how dangerous its presented points are.

For me, the two, or only two memorable comedic scenes were the IELTS exam and the twist at the end. The first hour was really dull, something I never found in any hirani film. The IELTS exam came right when the film felt like its lost its grip. The second half is where the actual film begins and as rightly pointed out by Sucharita and Anmol Jamwal were lack of empathy and the disconnect.
