My father was a British MP at Dunkirk, unable to leave the beach until 'every man for himself' was declared.

Let's not forget that an large part of the BEF was able to leave Dunkirk because of fierce fighting and resistance of the French army especially in the pocket of Lille : « These Frenchmen, under the gallant leadership of general Molinié, had for four critical days contained no less than seven German divisions which otherwise could have joined in the assaults on the Dunkirk perimeter. This was a splendid contribution to the escape of their more fortunate comrades of the BEF » - Winston Churchill, The Second World War. vol. II. Their Finest Hour, Cassel & Co., 1949, p. 86 The pocket of Dunkirk equally played an important role. Once again, French soldiers defended valiantly Dunkirk and outskirts. Between 35000 to 40000 French soldiers were captured on the 4th of June when the Germans entered the city. On the other hand certain British regiments were ordered to stay behind and fight to the last bullet and then surrender. This enabled thousands of the BEF to reach Dunkirk and evacuate. One cannot change history and it would be unfair to say that the French army did not pay an important role in allowing the BEF to evacuate from Dunkirk. This is just a question of opinion...

Who do they get to write these things? 'Wehrmacht' refers to the German armed forces; 'heer' is the army. And how outrageous to say they marched into Poland 'unopposed'.

@@johnbobson1557 The non invite to the victory parade was an unfortunate decision. I wouldn't characterise their treatment as appalling though. All Poles were allowed to stay in the UK after the war and were granted British citizenship.

@phlm9038
@phlm9038 10 месяцев назад
@@philipmadhatter4006 Well, the French couldn't defend their country anymore because of the gaps left in the defense after the departure of the British, plus the surrender of Belgium. You might have been told that the French and the Belgians let you down. But they didn't. They were preparing a counter attack which couldn't happen because of the departure of the British. I have always thought that the British soldier was a gentleman wearing a helmet instead of a bowler hat.

@@phlm9038 why did they need the British army to help ? They should of been more than capable on their own
@phlm9038
@phlm9038 10 месяцев назад
@@philipmadhatter4006 The UK declared war on Germany after this latter invaded Poland. The UK declared war on Germany FIRST, after having made sure that the French would do the same. The UK wanted war with Germany, I think so far we can agree. The UK decided to declare war on Germany, nobody forced them. The UK didn't want this war to take place on British soil, did they ? They wanted the war on French soil, and on Belgium soil when the Germans violated Belgium's neutrality. The only way to be allowed to fight on French soil was to get them involved. Plus this is what countries do when they have an alliance. There was a very simple way to avoid the war in 1919, at least in western Europe : allow France to permanently occupy the Rhineland in order to prevent another invasion. But what is done is done, or maybe I should say in that matter what was not done was not done.
@user-mg3xr9tz7m
@user-mg3xr9tz7m 10 месяцев назад
@@philipmadhatter4006yeah because the Brits cowardly retreated with no engagement from the battle of france and then promised the french to take those french divisions with them but left them behind. You might do Hollywood movies to hide the truth but its out there and you cannot destroy it like you try to do every year with your archives about your colonial genocides
