DUNKIRK: Mark Rylance & Barry Keoghan wanted to get wet

The parts Mark Rylance and Barry Keoghan played in the film were based closely on actual people, who went across in a motor vessel called the `Sundowner`. The Skipper was a man called Commander Lightoller ,who was famed for being the most senior member of crew to survive the sinking of the `Titanic` in 1912. He went across to Dunkirk with his son Roger and a friend, 17 year old sea cadet Gerry Ashcroft, the part played by Barry .In fact ,they did just one trip ,as on their return found that the authorities would only allow boats capable of over 20 knots speed to continue .The sea cadet didn`t die ( as in the film ) ,I knew him and his wife when they lived in Brightlingsea in Essex ,Gerry died quite soon after his retirement in the early 1990s.

I always enjoy Melissa's interviews. Her interest and enthusiasm comes across as really genuine.
