I'd say some of it has been discussed but indirectly after the initial hype period. I had questions in my mind from the launch, just took a while to get the set from the tour.
@@PaulWasabii the "indirectly" part is what probably makes your review even more interesting, since you go straight to the point. Hype aside, I still find the set delightful and use it almost daily. There's something interesting and cozy there that clicks with me.
Most useful review of the Davinci I've seen. Glad this came out after the air had cleared from most of the initial reviews. I do like the pebble analogy, I already have several iem's that fit that description so I can pass on the Davinci.
not that the dynamic driver is too slow (it cannot be fast if it isn't even responsible for higher frequencies in the first place), but just that the bass level is too much in relation to the upper mids/there is not enough upper mids/treble in relation to the bass. consider fourier transform. transients of the bass are actually realized with mid and treble component frequencies. if those don't have enough amplitude with respect to the base frequency, then it is going to sound soft. Increasing the bass quantity "always" decreases tactility, texture, rigidity, etc, if you keep your upper mids and treble the same. The automatic inference about a set that has more bass quantity than its competitors which are similarly tuned in the mids and treble is that the bass is going to be softer.
I think you can argue it both ways, there isn't enough upper mids/treb for the bass level or the bass level is simply too high for the upper mids/treb. Which do you want to hold constant or change. Which bothered me more? The one I tend to EQ. Thank you for taking the time to comment. People will pick up Davinci in a couple months and try to figure out how to EQ or want to get a better idea of what they are hearing.
The treble problem for davinci is that there is a large peak at 12khz, if you look at its bk5128 measurements by crinacle. That peak follows a dip from 8k-10k. So, instruments that span 8k-12k, like some cymbals, will sound off, timbrally.
Yep, I probably should have just looked on the graph. It is still tricky as I am not sure how many people really hear peaks in upper treble or know what it sounds like. That is why I tend to poke at it in EQ, it is good practice even after hearing lots of KZ sets with similar large peaks in the same area.
I really liked seeing the response graph together with your adjustments and that shoe pebble analogy was great. Learning about driver implementation was also interesting. I thought Dunu used two typical 10mm dd's, not a 10 and an 8 for different parts of the graph. Well done
There are a lot of variations of how brands are pairing DDs and Dunu seems clear on the range of each in this case. I don't have a perfect answer to all the bass complaints but its a place to start if you want to tweak it.

Cool set to try. Around the launch period, a lot of people bought them and then listed them on Head-fi/reddit. Not as much now, but for a while there was a decent supply of used sets out there.
I had used the Topping 50 III pair that I reviewed after, but I have a Topping DX5 and SMSL SU9/SH9 pair too. So what I will say on the flat midrange is what you see on the impressions, good mids, but if you are bothered by the bass, doesn't make a diff if you have flat mids. You have to remember Timmy said it was a bass forward set that happens to look very U shape, but I think you see the same comment about the mids, people tend to prefer Chopin who don't like all the bass. I haven't heard Hype 4 or Doscinco, but you hear less complaints on the bass. Different drivers, different levels of presence in the mix. DaVinci is tough in that respect, you need to accept the bass level and how it affects everything else
First of all, the IEM is good. But I bought this IEM expecting the wonderful bass that several reviews say it has. Unfortunately I didn't find anything special. I probably thought this because I'm very used to warm and/or basshead sound. This same thing happened with the Dunu Falcon Ultra. All reviews says how the bass is good. But I didn't find anything special in this one too. Davinci is basically the Dunu Vulkan. There is just a little differences here and there. To my ears the SA6 MK2 has a better bass. Recently the 7hz Five arrived and I'm liking it more than the Davinci. I will spend more time with the DaVinci and decide if I will sell or stay with it. As always a great review Paul 😁
I agree, I tweaked the bass a few times and sometimes it pops into place, and sometimes the driver is just not right for what I want to do. As I said, good bass means one thing to one reviewer, something else to others. I agree though, I had the same expectations since I am hearing it months later.
It is not so much there is a perfect dac, you can get an Apple dongle and enjoy it. Just be aware if you are buying a warm sounding dongle, it will add bass to an already bassy set.
Devinci sounds suprisingly well from smartphone, nothing special with dongles and the best with desktop solutions like Beyer A20 ( high output impendace amp) and Xduuo t-26 ( otl amp) with 70 Ohm Dunu adapter on both. With Fiio k5 pro and Xduuo t-22 sounds ok and with Topping A30 pro steryle. So in conclusion, with decent desktop dac/amp combo this is only iem you need, on the contrary without good amplification there are better solutions. Thanks for very nice review.
