I know why we cut out carbs after the D.S. - GAS!! It will put you in SO MUCH PAIN you eat different. If you don't want to be FARTING all day long - you eat right. I had a DS in 2010. I KNOW! I also take 15 vitamins a day! YES 15. The liquid/soft food diet after is easy, you'd not be hungry physically. Mentally you will be challenged. I lost, I gained back, I am losing again. It's a mental fight. Best of luck to anyone thinking of surgery.
I had a duodenal switch done 12 years ago tomorrow actually. 4/1/08 and It was the best decision I ever made in my life. I have maintained a 200# weigh loss. Today the surgery has gotten safer as well. But your vitamins are essential for long term health.
I just saw this video today, January 15, 2018. I am 16 months post op duodenal switch with Dr Cottam at BARIATRIC MEDICAL INSTITUTE. I lost 80 lbs and am at goal with no meds for HBP, DM II, Cholesterol. My sleep apnea is resolved, too!
Debra Broadbent Debra, I lived 8 hours away and arrived two days before my surgery (on a Sunday) for an appointment the day before surgery. I had the surgery early Tuesday morning. I was in the hospital two nights and three full days. I was discharged on Thursday evening about 7:00 PM. We left for home on Friday morning. So we had a hotel for five nights. I was told I could have been discharged after one night.
Debra Broadbent, side effects. I would say the most frequent side effect is gas. I do have some nausea also. I follow the dietary instructions that the office recommended. I find that it is difficult to eat enough protein. I have to supplement with shakes. The best protein shakes are by “Unjury”. You can order online. I also eat protein bars, protein plus is good.

My BMI is 38, and I am. Type 2 Diabetic, have resistant hypertension, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, and congestive heart failure. My double first cousin had RNY years ago, but experienced almost a full weight gain. I’ve heard that genetics is a good predictor if my results. I’m seriously considering the DS because I feel it’s my best hope for long term success.
I had the VSG with DS 2009 lost 129 lbs from 276 to 148. It’s 2021 July back up to 230 lbs so gained all but 46 pounds back. I had a 75cm common channel done at u of MN
Cath Johnson, did you have your surgery? I really didn’t have much in the way of bad side effects. I do get nauseated at times. I try to get in my protein early in the day with protein shakes. Sometimes it’s hard to eat enough. You are just not that hungry.
I wonder if youve previously had a bariatric surgery, if they would consider doing a revision to a DS? and what the success rate would be. Ive read somewhere that when you have a revision to a different procedure, youre outcome is not as good as someone who has never had surgery. It has something to do with a hormone that your stomach secretes that tells your brain to stop eating, without that hormone working for you, you dont feel satisfied. I dont know. I am so deficient in calcium, even taking the pills, that my bones in my feet are fracturing under the stress of my weight. I am just in agony. My body hurts so badly. Mentally, pain can put you in a terrible place.

10/03/2019 DS Duodenal Swith surgery Hi, I'm 3 yrs post op gastric bypass surgery very successful with no complications at all and none as we speak. However, I wish that I had known about the Duodenal Switch Surgery unless my doctor and hospital UNMH University of NM Hospital here in Albuquerque NM I Don't believe that it was being suggedted 3 years ago. I believe that it would have had a greater impact on my weight loss if i could have had the COMBO SURGERY DS+Gastric Bypass+Sleeve surgery and have gained quite a significant amount of weight back. My question is - I would like to know can a DS surgery be preformed after a gastric bypass surgery?
Yes. But, you may need to do quite a bit of research to find a surgeon who performs this revision. I’m in the same boat as you and checking out Dr. John Rabkin in San Francisco. This doctor does the same and is much closer to you, so I’d certainly check it out!
i’m not over weight, i fact i could use to gain five pounds, so i wouldn’t benefit in that way like everyone here,. thinking back before you had the DS, has anyone had bile reflux when sleeping or laying down on their left side? this causes a burning feeling or a feeling of high acidity in my upper abdominal area. was your poop a dark green at different times and at a stretch of a month or so each time? did any only have H. Pylori? if possible, i would love to know the answer to the laying down most of all … please and thank you! i’m glad everyone is doing better, i can honestly say i feel your pain.
I seen my surgeon yesterday and He'll be doing this procedure on me. I'm seeing Dr. Legrand in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Though I wanted a traditional bpd-ds, he informed me the loop is safer and provides the same amount of weight loss.
Do you have to shrink the stomach? I work out alot but don't lose weight but I would need to be able to drink a gallon of water a day cause I'm still always dehydrated even with that much water.
I had the gastric bypass over 10 years ago and I was fine until I got sick where I was on dialysis and then led to a kidney transplant. Since the transplant, the medication that I have to take for the rest of my life, I have seen an increase in weight and I am uncomfortable. I eat mostly salads, vegetables stuff that will keep me healthy. I am still not a big eater but the weight just keep coming on. I have started going to the gym but the weight. Is there a procedure that I can do to reduce the weight gain?
