I had the sleeve 7/29/16. Processed foods taste nasty now. I lost my weight in 7 months but I was not happy with my body. I started hiking 4/14/17 and went from a size 10 to a size 4 in 7 months.I hike 3-4 miles at least 4 times a week. My weight regulates itself and I don't worry about the scale. One MUST exersize AND diet....there is NO way around it. Milk and soda is a no-no for me. Surgery is not the magic bullet but it is a most excellent tool

@JeniLamberto

@@silverlining2794 That's so exciting!!!! My advice to you is do that like it's your job. Start now because it will give you the best start and habits. Follow the preop like it is your only concern at the time. Eliminater any need for caffeine and carbs before the surgery. Then, when you have the surgery stay on total food lockdown for 2 to 3 years to establish your habits. A lot of people are in a hurry to eat more. My feeling is just keep your food and animal protein at 3 ounces and under forever. I still weigh everything in my home and even though I can technically have 3 ounces I still listen to my hinger signals. Sometimes that means I only eat 2.4 ounces of proein at a time. Does that make sensnse? I am 3.5 years postop and still mainaining around 2121 pounds. My IG accounts are erniesmom863 and vsg.keto.timetoshapeup. Please feel free to dm me anytime. I am so excited fgor you!!!! And stay away from processed foods. That's the number on rule!!!!!

I love your videos and have your book, you help keep me focused and I pass your info on to so many others. Would you please make another video about the crazy idea I hear and see all over FB of "The 5 days pouch reset test". Makes me crazy when people believe some "trick" can get them back on track and losing again. I think they have moved to processed unhealthy food as they ate before, and the reset is just healthy food that makes you feel satisfied and back to good eating. Such false info out there about the details of surgery and weight loss, love that you address so many of those details and give us a better look at the real big picture. Thanks so much Doc.

Thanks for this video. I'm almost 2 1/2 years out of sleeve surgery - and I've suspected for the last 6 months that the food was leaving my sleeve very quickly. I do eat a predominantly plant based diet and have for the last year and a half. I had a hysterectomy 5 months ago and healing has been a little slow. I had to stop everything for another month back at the end of Jan. and I'm now back to spin classes and very light lifting. I gained only about 5 pounds but I don't want that to turn into 15-20. I just told myself - no dieting - if I want something to eat it just needs to be veggies, beans or fruits. Thanks for this video it affirmed what I was thinking. Looking forward to your new book. Take care. Connie

Thank you so much for this video. I am about 5 and 1/2 weeks out from surgery (VSG) and I was cleared to eat solid foods, I feel that I am able to eat too much at a time (3-5oz) and have been worried about it. Thankfully, I've been eating healthy foods that I've prepared myself, but this video was a good reminder to really focus on not letting myself slide back in to my old habits. I've been craving pizza and goodies lately but this video helped to put me back in the right mind set!

Glad to hear it - the sleeve is primarily a set point lowering surgery, the amount of restriction does not equate to weight loss. Don't worry about your portion sizes and focus on making healthy choices.

Dr. Wiener, I'm so glad I saw your vid. I'm 2yrs post op and lapsed back into unhealthy habits which have resulted in weight gain. I've been considering asking my surgeon to X-ray my sleeve because I can eat a full plate now and even when I was at the puréed stage I was eating much more than 2-3 oz of food. Listening to you has helped me to understand the need to take my focus off of the size of my sleeve to rather what I am actually eating. I'm starting a pouch reset today..going all liquids to shrink my stomach and reset my mind that I am a Bariatric patient that had surgery to lose weight. I've been eating almost anythin I want, but still though I would lose weight because of a smaller stomach. sooo not true. I lost 50lbs then gained 16 recently. top weight 260 now I'm 226. I take Latuda, but I'm told it's not supposed to cause weight gain. ?? Also, I have back pain so I haven't been exercising lately. I'm not giving up though. I will do exercises as the pain lets up and I will focus more on what I put in my mouth.

Wow- I am so glad to find your videos. A lot of my concerns are addressed in them. I am 6 weeks post gastric bypass surgery. This video was good for helping with possible regain of weight, but I am having trouble loosing it for just having surgery. In my 6 weeks since surgery I have only lost 18 lbs. I am doing everything right with protein, calories (only about 575 a day) and walk over a mile plus on my feet a lot throughout the day. No snacks and of course no sugar base foods. Mostly protein meats (no red meat), cooked veggies and protein shakes. My doctors office said “don’t worry it will come off. Just give it another week.” In over 3.5 weeks, not weight loss. If fact it jumps up a pound, then will go down again. Still the same weight. Have you encountered this with other patients so early? If so, please give me some suggestions. Thanks so much!
@apoundofcure

Darla Lawson People lose at very different rates after surgery and there are many reasons why. First, your starting weight has a big impact - if you start at 350 lbs, you'll lose a lot more weight than someone who starts at 250. Also, if you lose a lot of weight before surgery, we often see less weight loss in the first few months after surgery (yes, this is counter-intuitive, but true). This video may help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eZcUtdgt3fs.html

Dr Weiner, you're truly amazing! I love all of your videos! A question about eating dairy and meat with regards to weight regain. I am 9 months post op RNY and I love eating my Icelandic high protein yogurt with some fresh fruits added (rasp, blueberry, strawberries). Are you suggesting that I can gain weight from this? And I love that I can eat chicken, turkey and fish but I'm hoping that won't put weight on me? Just curious about those two. Thanks so much!
@apoundofcure
@apoundofcure 8 лет назад
Typically yogurt does not cause weight gain, but beware of flavored yogurts as they have either artificial sweeteners or added sugar. I recommend plain yogurt in the blender with fruit. As far as animal protein goes, a little is fine, a lot is not.
@25agk

+Dr. Matthew Weiner thank you so much for getting back to me. Yes I choose plain yogurt with no sugar and I add a small amount of fresh fruit. So I guess what you're saying is the amount that we're eating is important and that makes sense.

I had my surgery 8 months ago lost 60 pounds, but never lost any weight in 2 full months. I need another 40lbs off to reach target, not eating that much and I’m on the treadmill everyday for 40 mins. I think my under active thyroid is slowing me down. I drink kale, cucumber, celery, apple, green juice everyday 500mls. Just don’t understand my body how it’s not losing anymore. Stuck at 12 stone 11 lbs, I need to get to 10 stone

Dr. Weiner, I have a question, an important one: my sister had the gastric sleeve and lost 50 pounds to gained it back again. She has Hashimoto and it is very difficult for her to lose weight. She eats very healthy but still it is a huge struggle to lose the weight even when she walks daily. Would she be able to lose more weight in the future? Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter. I appreciate it.

Lots of factors like the consistency of the food. If your weight loss is on track, I wouldn't worry about it, but if not, it should be evaluated further.

Dr. Shermann Yu takes my insurance. He is going to do a revision with GBP. Do you know him? Thanks so much for all of your videos. When I had my first Vband in 1997, I did not receive all of the training that I have received this time. I have changed my way of eating and exercise. I never regained all the weight I lost with VBand. I only gained back 20 of what I lost, I just never lost that much.

With all due respect, I came across this lecture and feel it has some factual inaccuracies that needed to be clarified: 1- The gastrojejunal anastomosis diameter after gastric bypass has been associated with weight regain. This has been shown in both prospective and retrospective studies including a study presented during obesity week 2015 in LA (ASMBS session). Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases 2012; 8:408-415, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology 2011; 9: 228-33.2- Endoscopic techniques to reduce the gastrojejunal anastomosis diameter has shown efficacy in decreasing weight regain after gastric bypass including in randomized sham controlled trials and longer term studies. Kumar N, Thompson CC. Transoral outlet reduction for weight regain after gastric bypass: long-term follow-up. Gastrointestinal Endoscopy 2015, Gastroenterology 2013; 145: 129-1373- I agree that the gastrojejunal anastomosis diameter is only one component of multiple factors contributing to weight regain including medication, behaviors, diet, psychology.
@apoundofcure
@apoundofcure 8 лет назад
+Barham Abu Dayyeh I'm very much aware of these studies and most limit followup to one year. The more recent study, the one presented at obesity week was paid for by the device manufacturer that sells the suturing device used in the study. I learned my lesson with the lap band - ignore any study that shows clear evidence of industry bias. If there are additional, unbiased studies that support this claim, I may re-examine this issue, but I think using this study to change my practice would be a huge mistake. Although I acknowledge that there is some debate in the community that the GJ size does impact weight loss, it does not explain the wide variation we see in success after surgery. Lee Kaplan's work on the genetics of postoperative results is much more convincing to me.

+Amanda Ruden the cause of obesity is the interplay of our genes and environment. Sometimes changing your food environment is enough, other times it requires more drastic steps like surgery.

Yes, I agree with Dr Weiner. I lost 55 pounds on my own and could not lose any more. I tried for almost a year. So, I decided to have the sleeve done. I'm just a month (7/25/18) out and do not regret it in the least. As many have said "it is a tool to help you lose the weight" not a magic bullet. We still need to be mindful of changing the bad habit and making new ones along with making good choices. And exercising. My go to is water aerobics. I also want to start yoga as I feel my balance is off. I'm 64, highest weight was 308 and at last weigh in 234. My goal is to be as healthy. So, I can be t around to enjoy my children, grandchildren and maybe even some great grandchildren.
