I am answering a viewer's request for a review video of this Dura Heat DH2304S Portable Kerosene Heater. I've had it for a couple years now, and it works pretty well to take the chill off my garage in the winter, so it is pleasant to work in.

I bought this same heater the day before yesterday. I live in a (very) old mobile home, wanted a way to have my kitchen & living room to be warm for my coffee in the morning & doing my dishes in the evening. I had it on this morning for about an hour. Nice & toasty warm! Thank you for your review.

Great video. I own the same model and it will get my insulated garage to 75'F in three hours no problem. If you keep on med-low, it will run 8.5+ hrs on one tank of fuel. Also installed round rubber feet on the bottom for better stability. Tak care, John A 60107.

Thanks, John! I'm sure once I get the garage repaired it will make it nice and toasty. Since I recorded this I've added a tarp over the opening to the shed portion and it warms up much faster. I like the idea of the rubber feet.

I got one of these heaters and a major help heating my garage in cold weather. Protected me from getting frozen pipes when below zero. Nice video.

Use a small fan towards the top of the unit to move the heat around better. Most of the heat goes straight up. A word of caution though; don’t aim the fan at the flames, or they’ll get too high and the unit may smoke. I learned this by accident

I ended up attaching a small chain from the cage to the shut off switch. Because when I move it outside, the slightest bump will trigger the shut off, and your entire house will stink like fuel. The handle is a pain like he said. If it's not completely centered it will come out on one side and knock the entire top off and you have a small catastrophe on your hands. Outside of that, just being careful it's well worth it. Very hot, and cost effective. I can turn off the electric heaters in my house and save on my bill. It also gives me the peace of mind knowing I got a plan 'B' if the power goes out in a snow storm.

Yep, you are dead on regarding the handle. Thanks for watching!

I seem to remember having one of those when I was little. I don't remember the cage being around it. Is it pretty efficient? I've never bought kerosene. This seems like a great alternative to a propane heater. Great review 👍

I'm sure product safety required the cage. It gets hot as hell. I seriously considered propane, like one of the Buddy heaters, but I'd used kerosene in the past and new it would work. I'm sure propane is just as good. I get about 8 hours run time on a tank of fuel. It seems pretty efficient. Thanks for watching!

I have the same heater I have been running red Kerosene (off road diesel) because the pice of k1 Kerosene jumped to 16$ a gallon where red Kerosene (off road diesel) is 5$ a gallon. I just figured my wicks might burn through a little faster but it seems easy enough to replace so why not run the red.
@trbowlin
@trbowlin Год назад
Is it working? I would think it might smell a little more like diesel, but I'm with you if it works.
@JC-uy9hs
@JC-uy9hs Год назад
@@trbowlin, it works I don't notice any particularly strong diesel smells.

I'm just prepared to have to replace the wick sooner than expected but that's still cheaper than the K1 heater kerosene. 16$ a gallon where I live is outrageous. Feels like highway robbery.

Im a complete noob, How do we use this safely in the garage? Wouldn't carbon monoxide be an issue? I have a small window and a side door, if those are open periodically is that safe enough? Will it warm up a 2 car average size garage?
@trbowlin
@trbowlin Год назад
It should warm up the garage. The amount of carbon monoxide produced is very small. Opening them occasionally should be just fine. Thanks for watching!

TR - you didn't mention the K1 kerosene: how much it costs per gallon, and where you find it? We bought a Dura Heat kero heater a couple of years ago for emergency heating in the house. But when I checked around I learned that our local co-op gas & farm supply outfit had switched their kero pump over to an alcohol-free gasoline source for small engines. Then I learned that K1 from Home Depot or Lowes ran $48 for a 5 gal can. We also have a home heating & fuel station here (Oak Harbor) that will sell K1 in bulk. Last price I checked was $8/gallon. Sad story seems to be that in countries outside of the U.S., K1 may be economical, but NOT here. It's not recommended to burn diesel or #1 heating oil in these heaters. And I have no idea where one can buy JetA (kerosene based) by the gallon. So ... nice heater, but $$ to run.
@trbowlin
@trbowlin 2 года назад
Yes, the going price is about $8 per gallon. I found that Tractor Supply has a good price on it. There are also a couple stations in my area that sell k-1 at the pump, again about $8 a gallon.

That's a shame. Keep an eye on the gas stations near you. The one near my house sells K1 from pumps. Yesterday it was $4.25 (As of Feb 20, 2022 Indianapolis). I would never use the K1 sold in stores unless I was stuck. That stuff cost a fortune.

@@saintmichael2759 Our Skagit Farm Supply (Cenex) Co-Op here used to carry kerosene in a fuel pump, but after the U.S. totally screwed the pooch (IMHO) with motor fuel, Skagit replaced the kero with alcohol-free gasoline at a higher price than E-15 mandated here in WA.

When your kerosene heater smokes and smells, it could be due to several reasons. Here are some common issues and solutions: Dirty Wick: If the wick in your kerosene heater is dirty or clogged, it can produce excess smoke and a strong odor. To fix this, you should clean or replace the wick following the manufacturer's instructions. Improper Fuel: Using old or contaminated kerosene can lead to smoke and odors. Ensure that you are using clean and fresh kerosene fuel that is suitable for your heater. Airflow: Poor airflow can cause incomplete combustion, resulting in smoke and odors. Make sure there is proper ventilation in the room where the heater is used. Ensure that the heater's air intake and exhaust are not blocked. Flame Height: Adjust the flame height according to the manufacturer's recommendations. A flame that is too high or too low can lead to issues. Carbon Buildup: Over time, carbon can build up on the burner and other components, affecting performance. Regularly clean the burner and other parts as per the manufacturer's instructions. Maintenance: Kerosene heaters require regular maintenance. Check for any damaged or worn-out parts and replace them as needed. Proper Ignition: Ensure that the heater is ignited correctly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for starting and operating the heater. Fuel Quality: Ensure that you are using high-quality kerosene that is suitable for indoor heating appliances. Low-quality or contaminated kerosene can cause issues. Check for Leaks: Inspect the fuel tank and fuel lines for any leaks or damage. Leaking kerosene can result in strong odors and a hazardous situation. Hope this helps. TR
