I'm just loving rediscovering DD now in my 50s. I missed most of their '90s comeback stuff and had NO IDEA that they had done so many albums since then. It's really a pleasure to be able to say they're still my faves. They've got such a wonderful discography, even the undersold albums have real gems.
Same...I lost touch with them after the late 80's and recently went to their concert. It was love all over again and now I"m thinking I have so much to catch up on! Their sound and Simon's voice just brings me back...
@@Sammilicious70I never understand why people 'lose touch' with an act, as if they emigrate to the moon or something. People choose to lose touch with an act. It was all-"oh the screaming phase is over now, we're into the late 80s with crap like slagdonna, bon jovi, S/A/W and c/rap so let's not bother with them." To me, you only shrug off a band or singer if they lose their appeal and become crap, like some have, though Duran never did. In fact, their worst original album was done very much near the start-that silly record of 1983 that happens to house 'The Reflex'. I still own it and play it, as displays my loyalty, but it's pitiful compared to all they've done since, it was a case of too quickly recorded and mixed so much that anything valuable there (doubtful) was lost. Hell, their best 1983 song 'Secret Oktober' they didn't even put on it, which says it all! Way over 80% of DD's best stuff has been done SINCE their 1st so-called split when all the little girlies left them.
What an incredibly haunting, dark, and emotionally reflective song by DD. DD at their finest here. I am still perplexed over why this song wasn't a hit on the charts. Absolutely stunning sound and rhythm. The video, lyrics, and sound are simply sublime.
@@robmccluskey6906 They are very similar sounding and yes it is hard miss, but I like Suzie Q and this song alike. A great part of art I think is influence. Sometimes bands mimic sounds without even intending to or even really being much aware. At the time it's likely a forethought. The same thing happened with Coldplay's "Talk" and Kraftwerk's "Computer love" . Seriously, It's actually pretty interesting how that happens sometimes. I Think it's neat.
He does have one of THE best voices of any male singer. Once his voice truly matured-ironically on the weak 3rd album, there was no stopping him. He always performs beautifully on ballads-'A Matter Of Feeling', 'My Antarctica', 'Come Undone' and 'Winter Marches On' are 4 obvious examples, but then again, the album this killer No.1 ballad's from is the first to showcase many gentle songs-all of them very different texture and flavour to each other. A very brave move for that dumbed-down S/A/W saturated year of 1988 and Bros here, and slagdonna there and house music, and losers like Phil Collins and Paul Young still hanging about. Let's hear it then for this lovely song, 'Too Late Marlene', 'Palomino', 'Land' & 'The Edge Of America'. In fact, they're all gentle ones on Side 2, wow, never looed at it like that before, despite loving the album for decades, I guess cos they're all so different, unlike how a typical US act would do it. Brave to release a ballad in 1988 considering the year it was, though I know this charted between March and April 1989. Either way, killer song, but that's Duran. Not their fault a load of idiots don't know it. If this was from the highly fantasised 'Save A Prayer' era, be a hit all over. Things are never allowed to change for the best, yet losers are supported no matter what crap they keep boring us with year after year, decades on later. Very effing sad.
Simón tiene una voz impresionante y un rostro belloooooo Duran Duran es increíble gracias por compartir con nosotros los fans de Duran Duran este video simón, salón de la fama del Rock and roll 😘😘💋💋👀👌
All said here below. Underappreciated, some of the deepest cutting lyrics and melodies ever. Simon singing " cause I believe a little part of you inside of me will never die" across from the World Trade Center in this video is an unexpected haunting touch 12 or so years before that day.
I met DD in Chicago about the time this song came out. They were all gracious but Nick was hands down the nicest of them meeting fans. He came out and signed autographs, asking who everyone was as if he hadn't done it a thousand times before. Great memories except for the bitter cold that January day!
Nick is so down to earth and beautiful to behold, sarcastically funny and quick witted ,charming,intelligent,modest,considerate,gracious,etc,etc..... The first time I met Nick I was so excited yet fearful he wouldn't live up to that pedestal I had placed him on but only minutes into meeting him I realized that that he was so much more then I could have ever imagined. 38 years later I still get excited when I hear the words Duran Duran!
I've met them 3 times and every time Nick was the least talkative, maybe you've been lucky🤣. But they've been always kind, Simon in particular. God bless Duran Duran ❤️❤️❤️
@@ChristinaTrevino Agreed. It doesn't help when society plies you when your career is 'in', the minute it's deemed 'out', you are forgotten. But I find it easy, I mean I just collect all their records or make sure I know when they've got something out, if it whimpers, so be it, but it hardly ever does. Their brilliance, bravery and willingness to keep doing something new keeps them at the front of all the best acts out there.
I bought this album when I was a teenager and did not appreciate it until I was much older. Today it's become one of my favourite 80s albums of all time. They basically gifted fans a record that would revisit when they are older.
Yeah. It was such a drift from whatever they were doing earlier. But they wanted to drift apart from the boy band image and they did it. Eventhough cost them a few fans and álbum sales. But looking back it was something that needed to be done. Nowadays i look back and it think is q good álbum
Like many of the other people commenting here, I don't understand why this song was never a hit. The music, the lyrics, and the video are so beautiful, haunting, and meaningful. I also love the fact that the video shows a lot of Nick, as he is my absolute favorite, and is especially beautiful in this.❤ Everything about this song and video is a true work of art!
One of the best songs of a criminally underrated album. This was one of the only two post-Andy Taylor albums that I actually liked. I really liked how they were trying to redefine themselves and take a new path, and it's a shame nobody else seemed to get it.
Larry Wilson And otherwise, in a regard of the "it's a shame nobody else seemed to get it", that's quite an inaccurate assertion. I know where you are coming from.... the guys weren't as stellarly successful as in the early '80s, but the Big Thing album still managed to sell over 1.3 million copies in the USA alone and is certified platinum. Which is still a superb achievement.
Larry Wilson It is my Favorite Album too Larry! Palamino is a Beautiful song and Too late Marlene is also another Fav!!! I think if they brought it back, with more Air time, it would be BIG!!!
I recall reading an interview with Simon LeBon many many years ago and he was perplexed that this song didn't perform well in the charts. I think he and the band were floored that it didn't do well. I am old enough to remember when it was released, they had been around for about 8 years at that point and I think it was that moment in every band's career where the public is distracted by new things and start to move on. Their next album "Liberty" barely made any impact at all, though I recall the single "Serious" being played and I still enjoy that song greatly. Hard to believe now but they were bordering on being uncool at that time, especially in light of the great new stuff coming out of Manchester and of course grunge happening in the the States. But then they released "Ordinary World" and accomplished what is probably the greatest comeback in rock history...
Some Duran tracks are underrated and deserve a second chance and dusted off for the world to hear. This is one of them. Great lyrics and it's a different kind of vocal for Simon Le Bon to sing.
This is the song that made me a Duran Duran fan this year when I accidentally discovered it. There is something about Simon's lyrics and voice, combined with John's bass that just resonates emotionally with me in a way I can't explain. I've now discovered so many other gems in their catalog thanks to this song.
Without a doubt one of Duran Duran's most underrated and overlooked singles. A beautiful melody, incredible lyrics and the recording itself is absolutely sublime. When I read that they had to credit other songwriters simply because of the chord progression (which is honestly a fairly ordinary blues progression) I was incensed.
@@ilmaurizetazetaerreit's not by CCR. They made it famous and in a bluesy mood but original credit goes to Dale Hawkins. This is deffo one of DD's overlooked singles. It's a wonderfull and very deep, personal song. But because of it's typical blues-driven flow it does remind of Suzie Q. I remember back then when I heard it for a very first time, immediately reminded me of Suzy Q.
Sorry Rob, I wonder : are you by any chance the same person I had e-mail contact with earlier 2020 about father / Canadian war veteran? That would be too much coincidence I just have to know. GBye from The Netherlands
I came back to DD recently and found this song 2 years after my brother's suicide...It really fits, as does Ordinary World, seeing what led Simon to writing them...The guys have a way of doing that, creating songs you can relate to or give you the escape you need...
Yes, they’ve literally saved my life several times. I know exactly what you mean. Try not to go away from them again...there’s always something on each album that speaks to you in your own personal way.
This song is beautiful, and it is especially meaningful that Simon Le Bon is shown with the Twin Towers in the background while the words,”a part of you inside of me will never die.” So perfect.
Simons voice on this track is so crystal clear, truly powerful and high class. Always been a favourite of mine, I come back to it time and time again. Stunning.
Same here. I have a Pinterest board with almost 200 pictures of him LOL, and he's still as handsome today as he was back in the 1980s. It's not just his handsome looks though- his synthesizer sounds have always been my favorite part of DD's music, and what drew me to their music in the first place. He's such a gifted and innovative musician, just outstanding in every way.
He was clearly the star of this one. I think they were featuring him especially because he had the most recent loss. His dear friend Andy Warhol had been murdered while they were doing Big Thing and so Nick's part of the song was his homage to his old artistic mentor.
Brilliant on every level. A couple of decades later and this song still pulls at some heart strings inside of me. Simon's vocals are so melancholic and the song is pure magic. Defining moment for me in my life this song. Thanks DD.
I bought the album when it came out (God! I'm old!) and this is the first time I see the video. Damn! that Nick Rhodes could be soooo beautifully aesthetic! He was always the one to get my full attention everytime I saw a Duran Duran video.
ndoris Too fem,. I mean, if you like feminine guys then I guess so, but he pretty much just looks like a girl. If you're into mean actually looking masculine then I'm thinking Roger or Simon would be choice.
Ha!! 3 years after you posted this and I've got to say, this is one of my favorite albums too, AND the first time I've ever seen this video! I agree that Nick just screams "artist" in every frame you see of him, but, since he was my first celebrity crush, all I hone in on is John. Did they do a video for Too Late Marlene? Hmmm, off for a google search.....
@@masonhyden3628 if men had half the balls as he did to look that good now a days they'd hardly be "fem". John looks very frail and Simon looks unhealthily over weight. Nick looks like a modern day David Sylvain in this and its gorgeous.
A wonderful song, with magnificent lyrics. A real gem. This song from Liberty helped me a lot when I lost my mother in 1988 when I was 18 years old. And often the words "'cause I believe a little part of You inside of me will never die" help me to continue.....
They actually became very serious even the more "upbeat" songs deals with dark subjects. and yeah maybe they moved away from the "new wave" style but it was worthy...or at least in this album because liberty was the first average album they did
Tremenda canción, una de las tantas joyas que nos regaló y regala aún mi banda de siempre y digan lo que digan "big thing" es una maravilla de álbum, grande DURAN DURAN y regresen a Perú
Rob McCluskey yet still ten times better than Suzie Q. Also it’s only the vocals of the verse that have a similar tune. This is song is not a direct copy. Michael Jackson did the same to Duran themselves while having a similar tune to a part of the verse in Black or white to Hungry like the wolf
I know the origin behind this song, and now listening to it after the passing of my husband -- whom I met when we both lived in NYC -- it just moves me even more. "A little part of you inside of me will never die."
Such a beautiful song - One of my favorite Duran songs of all time!!!! I always feel 'good' and inspired and just overall happy when I hear it for some reason.
I remember MTV making a big deal about Chen Kaige directing this video. They showed a small clip of the making of several times on the MTV news. Then they played it once! Just once!!!!? It was 1988 and the downfall of MTV was already begining to show........
I don't think that I've ever heard a song when Simon Le Bon's voice wasn't beyond incredible. Duran Duran are one of my favourite bands. They are solid and talented musicians, great writers and Simon Le Bon has one of the best (if not the best) voices in rock and roll. Their early work which was very popular is still great to listen to, and even now at 56 years old, I can put on some of their later works, and it stirs up my deepest emotions. I am acrazy person whose world (in both thought and feeling) has been turned upside down and pretty much stolen from me - but thank good tht embedded in music is something that can momemtarily remove my thoughts and emotions cfrom the never-ending cruelty and chaos here 24-hours a day. Truly talented singers, in my opinion have music in their voices, and soemthing else that I don't have the words to describe - and it is in these moments when I realize how truly talented they are as a band and how many peoples lives they touched. From album to album, their sound and style matured. "The Winter Marches On" was a song on Notorious that blew me away; I was working in a t-shirt shop on the Wildwood, New Jersey Boardwalk and I would listen to the entire Notorious cassette at the time, and I would stand at the front of the store that was built on the actual boardwalk and stare out to the ocean and travel in my thoughts and emotions to the most beautiful and tranquil place; and on days when the sky was filled with the most incredible rain clouds of all shapes sizes and shades of greys and blue's the sky would appear to be glowing and almost playing in harmony to the music. And their following album Big Thing - when I listened to Side Two of the album/cassette and disovered the the song "Land"..I remember saying to myself in the most profound way "no way; but no way in the most incredible way, and thinking that if g-d/god actually exists or their is a heaven somewhere beyond our earthly perceptions, that Duran Duran's goes music transports me there (in heart, mind and soul); kind of like Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven does for so many people. Thank you Duran Duran for so many, many times throughout your entire career, making music that makes me happy to be alive, and reminds me that the world was once a brilliant place, that was not built on fighting and crazy viruses; and most sadly - fear. Love, gratitude and warmest regards, GarySamuelBesner - Casa Grande, Arizona 85122

roxette2...Simon's childhoos friend David Miles who died of an overdose. JT explains here that the dedication was later made to Miles, Warhol and Sadkin too...but the original inspiration was David Miles's death..one of three songs SLB wrote in tribute to Miles..the other 2 being Ordinary World and Out of my Mind.
I love this video. I have all their CDs, but I never really gave this song much attention until I watched the video for the first time a couple months ago...now I love the song. Their videos have always been beautiful, sometimes sad, but always artistic and entertaining. They have always been unlike any other band from the early 80's 'til now...that's why they have been my favorite band for 33 years.
Do you believe in love? Do you believe in shame? And if love can conquer all then why Do we only feel the pain? I heard you speak my name Heard you singing The Stones Maybe heard you laughing in a line of static On my telephone So why your eyelids are closed Inside a case of rust? And did you have to change all your poets fire To frozen dust I try to justify it To learn from your mistake But where's the stupid lie that has to make its point With such a pointless waste? Come out Do you believe in shame? Do you believe in love? And if they taste the same would you love again Or abandon both? I don't think I ever can believe my friend is gone Keep saying it's alright I'm gonna bring you back But I know I'm wrong There's nothing I can say There's nothing left to do It's just that lately I've been so damn lonely when I think of you And it may seem selfish now but I'll hold onto The memory until all this fear is washed away Do you believe in love? Do you believe in life? Cause I believe a little part of you inside of me Will never die Cause I believe a little part of you inside of me Will never die Cause I believe a little part of you inside of me Will never die Cause I believe a little part of you inside of me Will never die Oooooo-hey Oooooo-hey Oooooo-hey
