I'm a metal head and bass player. People don't believe me when I tell them I'm a huge fan of Duran Duran. Their songs are great and thanks in big part to the bass lines. John Taylor is a great player.
i'm also a massive metal man but also love the bass lines. bass has made me appriciate tons more music........been laying down lines for donna summer ffs lol
Same here. Duran Duran was just something else. And these John Taylor bass quarantine tutorials from the past year are just awesome. I've been listening to Duran Duran since I was about 7 years old so around 1985. My wife knows the drill when we go on road trips.. night time driving music is Duran Duran.
I have no idea why people sat Taylor is under rated. Every bass player that is worth his salt knows this guy and his riffs. If you mean uderrated because his name is not splashed all over the place well I can give you some other great examples. Paul McCartney -- Listen to Geddy Lee gush over his bass playing in the 2 part interview here on youtube.
Callsign Static in almost all “best bass players” rankings I’ve seen, Paul McCartney is in the Top 10 or higher. Never seen John Taylor in any of those rankings. That’s why I say he’s underrated as a bass player.
I must agree. Not just that Roger Taylor is scarsely mention in best player lists of the last "x" years. However, Paul McCartney is sometimes listed in the first 10 of all times ... what the hell??
I have to admit when Duran Duran came out in the 80s I didn't like them because it was a bunch of pretty boys playing "chick music", but as I have matured I have really come to respect the musicianship, especially John Taylor's bass playing. He really expanded on the role of the bass player. Duran Duran would not have been the phenomenon that they have become without him. That's why I think you're very talented. It's not just playing the notes, but you capture the feel as well. Fine job.
SayonaraSixString it wasn't just John and Andy - who left to form Power Station - it was really the whole package that was Duran Duran that I came to respect.
Ah yes, definitely. It's a shame Andy left (or was he kicked out?). Warren Cuccurullo is undoubtedly a great guitar player, but Andy really brought something special I thought.
Thanks for sharing. I think a lot of folks felt about them as you did. I was around 18 when they broke on MTV and I loved them--could not figure out why. Today I am still a fan and I realize that the infectious bass line was the key. Bernard Edwards would be proud.
I saw them live a few years ago. My wife got me tickets. She wasn’t a DD fan, but was blown away. They played for almost three hours, and were killer! After the show, the first thing she said was, “they really can play!”
Actually, Nick Rhodes is not that talented as a performing keyboardist, his talents lie in the production end of things and finding those timeless sounds that he plays, which is why his band nickname is "the controller" - but actually playing the keyboards? No.
You are the closest bassist to hit John Taylor’s style of play. His sense of timing is what makes this song so amazing. You my Dear have nailed it! I really enjoyed this very much.
As a pushing 70 bass player, I picked up my first bass in 64. I see that you have a good 4 finger technique, which is very good. When I would get tired on a set, I would transpose a, say G to F and alternate 3 finger to 4 finger for the interval, which is called the cup. Sort of a break. I learned a warmup from Dave Larue, called the spider. Start with open E, run all four frets, then alternate to the A string one fret up. Run the neck, then invert and descend the entire neck. It will warm U up and get you ready for the gig. Best wishes and may you have a great musical career, oz
It's fine if you have quality gear to listen on. AirPods works great for low end. Very distinct bass lines. I listen to his lines so I can cop his style in my band.
I keep coming back to this video when I need a lift, such a great job of nailing the bass! A fantastic song that sounds easy but is so complex, and played so well. Thank you!!
You are very good, and fun to listen to this bass line ... great choice .... one of my all time favorite pop songs, from my favorite band of my lifetime! :) Thank you!
lol, I saw you smiling at 4:12 when you were expecting the change up. Don't feel lonely, I have done that dozens of times. Your brain really wants that change to be there instead where it is. Great Job
Wow! I have listened to this song so many times over the years, but never really heard the base line that clear. It's very complex but you have done a fantastic job playing it! Really enjoyed that, thank you...
you truly have something that cannot be taught I think as well as being a superb musician you have the gift of being able to put feeling into whatever your playing really nice job
When I was about 11 or 12 I became obsessed with duran duran. Bought my mums dd greatest hits dvd and played this song alot with my friend jess and we would put this song on repeat and dance like the backup singers on the reflex video. She still loves duran duran too ❤️
Thank you kindly Alessandra for your very friendly & beautiful playing of the Bass Guitar. You are a true prodigy, not because you 'play-so-well', but you're not afraid to both learn and make the mistakes it takes to become better, in front of us all, your listeners and fans. I am truly a FAN of yours. - BCRadio
Just now seeing this Aless, I love it! I am a lifelong John Taylor and D2 fan. Great cover. It's great to see a woman playing the bass...so well. My dad was a bass player. John should be proud. : )
This is gorgeous. I remember, as I came out of my musical snobbishness as a Prog Rock teenager, appreciating the music of Duran Duran and this song and its bass line in particular. Alessandra, you have really captured it. I love your warm but funky feel. I wish you were in my band. (I do not currently have a band.)
Fantastic. I was 10 when this song came out and it was my favourite song. Unfortunately we didn’t have mtv in Australia so I was really starved of it. I just love the bass during the chorus. I wish his bass was higher in the mix in every song of theirs. Thanks.
