Now there’s something about the sound of a Brass band that immediately conjures up images of a bygone era - of coalmines, pit villages and working class communities. It’s dates back to the 19th century and although the collieries have all but closed, it’s a tradition that is still very much alive. And there is no better place to see the art form in all it’s glory than at the Durham Brass Festival in the north east of England. High profile artists taking part in the 2022 event include the poet laureate Simon. Armitage fronting a rock band and Mercury Prize nominees Field music. Sharuna Sagar went along to rehearsals at Durham Gala Theatre.
