Uff the durian has a bad reputation of bad smell, the more mature it stinks, I do not have the whim to try it, I prefer the white or black Sapote, greetings!

I grew up in Singapore, and I never really liked durians. However there's one variety of durian (the most expensive one) called the Musang King which I actually quite like. That one actually does taste like custard. If you have the chance I think you need to find someone who can introduce you to a good Musang King.

Durian tastes especially good if you refrigerate--it tastes cold, sweet and creamy, just like ice cream. In Singapore, we have durian-everything; durian cream puffs, durian cakes, even durian pizza lol.

@@Despotic_Waffle I'm Malaysian too, I think the issue is they always want to thaw a frozen durian, I love eating frozen durian, it has a texture like ice cream not hard like ice cube, any fruit thawed will just taste soggy disgusting. and for the people who can't stand the texture of even fresh durian, have they never eaten cream sauce / bolognese sauce with some melted cheese? the texture is the same.

I almost wonder if the flavor is gene determined like cilantro or something, because so many people describe the flavor so wildly differently. It tasted like maui onion corn chips to me. Very savory. Weird..
@kamarikim
@kamarikim 4 года назад
i wouldn't doubt that. To me it tastes like slightly spoiled mango without most of the sweetness that would result from that
@zilvoxidgod

there's also a lot of different varieties and smell is SUCH a huge component of flavor, I bet if you take the fruit to someone without them ever smelling the skin/shell they'd taste it differently
@sazji
@sazji 3 года назад
I’m not sure I buy the genetic cilantro thing. I thought cilantro tasted awful like soap the first time I tried it; it was just so completely foreign to me. I was off it till I had it in Vietnamese food and appreciated it. I’ve never heard of a Vietnamese person who has a “genetic dislike” of cilantro. Or a Mexican, for that matter. Maybe some aren’t wild about it but not this visceral revulsion. Maybe it only affects people or Western European ancestry? :-)

I'm glad you gave it another try. I bought some frozen stuff years ago, when I didn't really have the money but I was so curious... Tried a piece, said "oh hell no," and stuck it back in the fridge. The next day, I decided that since I'd spent 10 dollars I couldn't really afford, I would eat it if it killed me. The first bite was weird, the second was "hmmm...not bad..." and on the third bite, it just clicked. The rest didn't last long! You can keep the noni though. :)))

Fresh durian is really amazing, but once you've acquired a taste for it, the frozen ones aren't bad either. A good durian, I think, tastes like a rich vanilla custard with crushed pineapple, parmesan cheese, and a hint of caramelized onions. It's also kind of kaleidoscopic, the flavors shifting from bite to bite. Sometimes, it's more banana, sometimes more onion, sometimes a hint of really funky cheese. It all depends on the season, freshness, ripeness, and the individual durian itself.

a lot of things are like that, you have to acquire the taste to appreciate the inferior forms. Like broccoli, you steam frozen brocoli and the place stinks and nobody likes it first try... but fry it up so it's still crunchy, people acquire the taste, and it's a lifelong favorite vegetable. Even pizza is an acquired taste, people who's first impression of pizza is greasy soggy crap from some school cafeteria are the ones who don't like it.

Next time (yes, there *must* be a next time -- haha), there is a durian farm/resort where they only serve durian that have fallen within the past 30 minutes or so. They have multiple grades according to fruitiness, sweetness, wine-notes, and numbing effect. Do I believe it's better than the frozen one I got in Chicago? Well, it certainly couldn't be worse. :)

The texture is like custard, it in no why tastes like it. And the Durian ferments from the start of its life to the end so it builds up that odor inside of its husk. So never buy one when its freshly open, find some thats already packaged if at all possible (It really helps.)

I tried fresh Durian on a business trip in Thailand, near Pattaya. We stopped at a roadside stand coming back from lunch, I must have gotten lucky... The one I tried had very little onion/garlic component, and was a delicious almost cherimoya like mix of familiar tropical flavors, but with butterscotch throw in. One of the best fruits I've ever had.

I tried durian today and the flesh of the fruit DID make a sound when I lifted it from the cutting board. Like the sound of picking up an upside down cupcake when the icing is parting from a table. I've never been that conscious of that sound, but now, in recollection, that is what the durian sounded like.

For me, the Durain is best frozen and crushed, like a forze custard. I make an "ice cream" out of it, and I learned that from a Japanese friend, actually. There's an asian supermarket by my house, and I get frozen durian all the time, but I aways make fruity ice cream with it instead of thawing it. Much better that way. My favourite are the pandan durian cakes. They're Vietnamese, and the brand I think is pia. It definitely smells like turpentine and wet garbage, no doubt, and it does kinda taste like someone put pungent garlic in my banana pudding. But I do like it.

I did anyway. He was right. I almost puked and both my roommates ran to the sink to spit it out. It said it was "chunks" of Durian, but it was a cottage cheese texture. That was sign number 3 that this was a really bad idea.

Finally! I've been fascinated by the durian for years (ever since Super Mario Sunshine came out), and even though I did find a store in Norway that sells them I'm still unsure about actually buying one. They have to be frozen to make it all the way up here, and if I buy one I have to take it with me on the bus home. For three hours. If it starts thawing they might throw me off! Also, I don't feel like eating any fruit that has been frozen. But maybe. Because my curiosity is killing me. (And I can't wait to see the NONI. More than 10 years ago my best friend at school used to drink this noni-extract every day, it was mixed with blueberries to make it tastier, her parents paid tons of money to get bottles of it in the mail and it was supposed to cure everything and make you superhealthy and even though she totally believed in it she had to admit it was revolting.)
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 10 лет назад
What does the durian do in Mario Sunshine? Is it an enemy? :) Yeahh.... you dont want to take that on a 3 hour bus ride... unless maybe you have a really good cooler. They still might kick you and/or your durian off. But yeah, if you can, try the frozen one. Its awful (IMHO) but will give you an idea. Noni... there seriously is no worse taste in the world. That video'll be up Sunday.

To all other fruit lovers, I have a question about durian. I have been lucky enough to have found a little Asian market about an hour and a half from my house. Well, I found a whole frozen durian fruit along with may other great treats like longan. How long do I thaw the durian for? Many sites say many different things. I figure I would ask the experts.

it's not just about freshness. durian connoisseurs in PH have individual preferences, to the point of asking vendors what variety is being sold before they actually buy. fruit stands are more careful in selecting farm-bred varieties to keep in stock, so watch out for itinerant durian vendors who are too clueless about what they're selling that you'll end up buying exactly what you got the first time : spicy, onion-tasting durian from parts unknown that no one wants to eat. next time you're in PH, ask fruit stand vendors what durian varieties they 'specialize' in, and where they source their stock. best durian in PH comes from davao region so in case you go there, try as many varieties as you can. your tastebuds will tell you what durian variety suits you best.

My family is divided into durian lovers and durian haters. I personally LOVE the taste, texture, and have even grown to love the smell.

Will do! The Asian market that I get my frozen ones supposedly gets them in for a few weeks a year. I will try to catch it this year.

There are research that say some people are genetically can't stand the smell, thus will vomit when they eat it because the smell is overpowering their senses. But for those who can accept it, they will see the durian smell as delightfully fragrant and so is the taste.

I guess I consider durian the gateway weird fruit, but I have had plenty of the local weird fruit in East Texas and there are a few.

I tried it once. It was like onion ice cream, but like that Fruit Hunter guy said about the cempedak, you just have to go at it like a predatory animal. The taste was kind of gross, but the experience fulfilled something primal I didn't know I needed. I won't say you should try it again, but if the opportunity comes up on its own some day in the future you should eat with far more abandon.

I have eaten it a couple other times and still am kind of soso about it. I think I need to like starve myself for a day and then try it. I can see myself going primal on it if I were really hungry.

One of my friends found a durian at a local Asian imports store and dared all of us to try it. As soon as I smelled it, I chickened out and refused to taste it but the smell was driving the dogs crazy, so we checked to make sure it was safe for them, gave them each a little taste and they acted like it was the best thing they'd eaten in weeks. ....So apparently durian is a doggy delicacy.

Weird Explorer ....Well they also eat their own poo and most dogs seem to take an interest into things that don't smell terribly pleasant so I'm gonna chalk it up to that Lol.

I think that if you eat meat you may not like durian. I’ve been plant based for over 3 years. I just tried durian for the first time this week. It was delicious. The smell wasn’t that bad

Personally, a lover of durian. Some durians have a milky, custard-ish taste. But some durians have a sour amd minty taste. Smell wise, I think it smells like a very old condensed milk in a can.
