The word "smelliest" is so wrong, so wrong. It is aromatic, fragrant, heavenly. It is gold.

i brought some frozen durian home for the first time, and I can definitely say that it has a very strong smell of garlic and mango. If you are not used to the smell, it can overpower the taste and be overwhelming. However, once you get used to the smell, the fruit actually tastes good. it has a unique soft, almost custard texture, and is not overly sweet.

Count me as another of the small minority of westerners who enjoys Durian. To me, the smell brings back memories of my time living and working in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur... D 24 is my favorite. :)

As a Malaysian, my whole family loves durian, including my cats! I'm dead serious about it. Except the fact that my cats are very picky. They tend to only like the expensive kinds like Musang King and the likes. They're not a fan of the cheap ones. I guess there's a reason why my cats are a part of my Malaysian family now. lol

I just tried it. It was very sweet and had a unique flavor I can only describe as pineapple-onion. My dad was put off by the mushy appearance, but said it tasted like fruit candy.

Durian taste at it best when it is eaten fresh within 2 to 3 days when the fully ripen fruit drops naturally from the trees. Even the squirrel on the tree are very picky. Durian harvested on trees before they ripen naturally will loose it taste n smell.

Here's a recommendation: For sweet durians: Go to Thailand. Mostly harvested via cutting, less fragrant. Available year round. For fragrant, often bitter and/or sweet durians: Malaysia: Harvested via falling. Available only for a 3 month period. Best quality to price ration in my opinion. Recommended - KL has durian tours during these times; go, and don't forget to bring insect repellent (and a helmet for those who are scared). Adventurous? - Indonesia, where forest durians can be sold on the streets. Really hit-or-miss. Pungent/Fragrant. Want it simple and quality guaranteed? - Singapore (PRICEY - durians can go for over 50 British pounds [35 SGD per kg, 3 kg fruit) for one at the most famous shops) Best durians are packaged and sent here. Note, quality only guaranteed so far as the knowledge of the durian eater you seek out here. From: A Singaporean durian eater.

I am Malaysian and we too love our durians! It honestly doesn't smell that bad.

The very same Westerners in this video who are expressing their revulsion at the smell of durian will turn right around and stuff large quantities of cheese, which smells like human feces, into their mouths. So it’s really just a matter of what you’re accustomed to.

I am a Singaporean and Singaporeans LOVE durians!!! It just so irresistible and when you have one bite, you want to have some more!

You guys are all eating it wrong that is why it is horrible, your supposed to wait until the fruit cracked open out of the shell before eating, and eat it when it is in a pudding consistency, not hard... All wrong...

My family took a trip to Thailand 5 years ago. One of the first things we did after unpacking at the hotel was go to a street market, and they were serving very fresh durian. My mom bought me a piece, and when I opened the wrap around the pod the smell wasn't great, sure, but I roll my eyes hearing people describe how bad it smells. It tasted like cantaloupe and caramelized onions delivered through the texture of custard, and I immediately bought another piece to eat. The pieces I ate were taken from a fruit removed from the tree that day, so I'm certain that factored into how it smelled ant tasted, but to me this is an INCREDIBLE fruit.

Durian is said to smell like oil/petrol, So the Ang mohs should like it.

Those are really good I don't really mind the smell it I think it smells good and I don't really mind the texture to, I think it's delicious.

There are very wide variations of Durian. From the sweet ones to bitter ones, salty (cheesy) ones, even ones without taste or smell. We even have Durian with a small hint of spiciness. If you want sweet ones, go to Malaysia. If you want buttery ones, go to Thailand. If you want the bitter ones (and the ones with very small taste of spices), go to Indonesia and hire a local guide.

Ive tried it! The smell was very strong but it was good. I tried it in a milk shake and yep.. loved it. I just need to step out of my tiny home more and explore... there are wonders to discover!

People in western countries 1st time try durian, which is old and acidic and say that's how Durian smell n taste. It is smelling n tasting Yoghurt n say this is how Fresh Milk smell n taste like. Try fresh Durian !

You have to eat Durian in Thailand and let vendor to pick the type called "Mond Thong" which less smell and pick not too raw and now too mature. You will like it at first bite.

The first bite is always challenge to everyone. But after the first bite, most of people can't resist it, like addictive. I suggest try a frozen piece for your first bite, much better and less smell.

Please don't promote durian to the West. China importing it has already made it much more expensive now!

"Durian" these language from indonesia, and these fruit the best favorite fruit on my nation. Durian if you translate on inggris language its call "The Thorns" on indonesia the call "Duri" The Durian originated comes from the islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra, and spread to all corners of Indonesia and several countries in Southeast Asia.

it is a high time for all of us in south east asia to come together and guard this priceless fruit to our selfish self only okay. stop exporting this fruit to China or wherever. Would you rather watch the price of Musang King skyrocketed to RM100/kg and you can only watch this Mat Salleh or Mainland Chinese eat your favourite fruit while you there sitting and looking at the ordinary durian because you cannot afford to buy Musang King?

why does durian skin prickly? well, because the durian tree grows branches and is very tall and can reach 5 - 15 meters, the fruits that are big and ripe will fall off by themselves. Even though the durian fell from a height, it would not break because the thorns stuck directly to the ground, not bouncing anywhere. That is why durian skin is prickly.

I’m a big fan of durian too. I don’t think it’s smelly but smells very nice. And it tastes wonderful. So sweet!

fyi, strong smell =/= bad smell. It doesn't stink [stink represents bad smell] It's banned from hotels and public transports because the smell stays. Who would want the whole hotel to smell like durian when they want their lobbies and rooms to smell fresh? It's ironic of how it's labelled as the smelliest fruit (negative impression) when it's known as the King of Fruits (best/royal). A lot of westerners thought it smells and tastes horrible before they even know/see/taste it because of how durians are portrayed --> smelly Some of my friends from UK, Australia and New Zealand who came to Malaysia found the smell too strong but quite pleasant, they fell in love with it after they tried it. For a first timer, you have to try the fresh durians (1-3 days after it fell off the tree). Durians which are not ripe (haven't fallen off the tree) or after it has fallen off the tree for too long (has a little alcoholic smell) is not as good as the fresh ones. Once you get past the strong smell, the taste won't be a problem to you. That's why people always said durian "smells like hell but taste like heaven"

The best Durians are from Kompot, Camboldia, where the best peppers were also cultivated. It tastes different from the ones in Thailand.

Thailand's durians are the best in the region. The Chinese love Thai durian the most.

You should go to Davao city Philippines and get drunk with durian.

Durian is an acquired taste. But I've seen some Japanese and British actually "addicted" with durian. They got to have it everytime travelling to South East Asia

Best way for a foreigner to eat a durian for the first time, imo, is to leave it in the fridge for four hours, the cool air will reduce it's smell. Also, people fear it so much because of the stench that they don't allow it to go past their tongue, they don't even chew on it, they spit it out almost immediately, and of course, they have no idea what it really tastes like. I've always eaten durian cold, even when I was in vietnam, I would never eat it straight from the fruit, even though I can, I wouldn't, it's very much like drinking fizzy drinks, tastes bland when warm, but wow, awesome when it's chilled.

I love durians!!!but it brings me to the thought of the person who founded durian, he must have been a very hungry person to have pick a spiky fruit up and opening it to eat it even with that smell...

I live in Hawaii and have two Durian trees. Personally I think they smell like vomit but I have multiple friends that love them. They are always happy to help me eat them, they act as though they have gone to heaven, makes it all worth while.

i very love durian,,, the smell, the taste was very good... yes, somebody(include asians) hate the smell and it taste... i don't know why... and not every single of durians have a good taste, you have to choose and judge the best before you decided to buy it... once you get a good durian, you'll love it... While I can agree that Durian is very strong, I personally don't think it stinks. I love it. I go to my local asian market every couple weeks and buy one or two. I definitely prefer Fresh over Frozen, but I will take what I can get. It is amazing

giving durians to elephants is not a fair test of it's smelliness. Durian is one of the fruits which is high in calories. I've heard anecdotal stories about people finding bears, elephants, tigers and boars eating durians

The only fruit that contains all the important nutrients and like meat it's also full of protein too (approx 4 gm per piece!). Its smells aromatic not stinky.

Elephant eat durians? That's normal in the jungle most animals will eat it if they get their hands/paws on it rhinos,orangutans , monitor lizard even strict carnivores like tigers..
