Imagine seeing a man armed with a pistol steal 50 horses and he is doing this loud war cry and then the building behind him gets blown up. Badass.

Riding away from a German camp being bombed while leading 50 stolen horses chanting a war cry is one of the most baddest bad ass things ive ever heard.

Fortunately, I knew Joe through my work with Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. He was a respected leader of the Crow tribe, held a doctorate, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. For me, he was a simple, yet great man who loved to talk about Crow tribal history, the Battle of the Little Bighorn, and everyday life. He is missed.

The story of Joe Medicine Crow, before during and after the war, need to be a full length movie IMO. That man was an icon.

His commanding officer said "If anyone can do this, it's probably you." The man is what men dream of being. What an amazing person.

Dude is in the middle of a doctorate, pauses, fights in WW2, does unbelievably badass things in the war, then goes back to finish his doctorate. You make me proud to have native blood running through me

I served with a LAKOTA in Afghanistan in 2007. He was killed 4 years later in a car crash, but there is no one i would want more to my right or to my left when the bullets started flying. I truely miss my friend and we need more like him these days.

The most wonderful thing about this story is that this man proved that the highest honor in war is not killing but showing mercy.

I would like to call attention to the fact that one of the requirements for becoming a war chief, touching the enemy without killing them, was accomplished through empathy. This seems to drive home the point that becoming a war chief necessitated discretion and potentially compassion, not simply combat prowess.

This man, deserves a statue.

Somehow despite all his great deeds during the war, the thing that struck me as most awe-inspiring about this man is his statement "I was singing too, but they probably thought I was wailing". You can imagine that someone coming into this world singing does signify the birth of an absolute legend.

Here’s a person who owed this nation nothing. His ancestors had been done horribly wrong by the US government. And still he fought for the US in World War 2. That’s an American hero. Why don’t we learn about people like him in schools?

We just finished a school here in Billings MT named after him. He passed knowing his name was going on a school.

This... is actaully the most badass thing I have ever seen. My man stole 50 horses with only a pistol while the building goes up in flames behind him. Drove a hero through a fence in a concentration camp to literate it, disarmed a German soldier fought him, but didn’t kill him. God damn that’s so cool.

This reminds me of my grandfather who was a Navajo code talker, I always cherish his history and sought to learn the Navajo language to honor him.

The part that requires you to spare an enemy makes it beautiful. A true leader for war must always consider the lives of everyone.

I really like the qualifiers of touching an enemy without killing them, and disarming the enemy. That's very tough and extremely dangerous to do no matter who you are. I also like it because it encourages mercy, and that jives very well with a biblical passage I like that teaches you if you have a choice between choosing death or choosing life, choosing life is the moral choice. There are times where killing is acceptable, such as to eat and to prevent yourself or others from being eaten/killed. Being able to spare your enemy's life isn't weakness; to the contrary, one must be very strong to let their enemy live and continue living themselves. It's like saying, "I'm so powerful that I will continue to live whether or not my enemy lives, so I will let my enemy live as proof of my strength."

My favourite part was "Honour". He had an enemy soldier literally by the throat, yet stopped. A man who knows the borders is a wise man.

I love stories of men from First Nation tribes serving America with bravery and honor. They exemplify honor, despite America having been less than honorable towards them throughout our history.

When your hero dies and you remember exactly when and where you were when you heard the news. You have been missed and your memory will continue on through our words as I tell stories about you to my kids. Your spirit lives through us, thank you for all you’ve done in our community.

I live in northern Wyoming and met this man when I was a child at the rose bud battlefield. It was at a native ceremony commemorating the battle that took place there. He was loved and respected by everyone that had the honor to know him.

Why don't we learn about this man in our schools? This is an amazing story.

The horse part gave me goosebumps. Picturing that badass riding out, screaming a war cry- those Germans were probably as scared as they were confused. Legendary.

After my dad passed away, we went through his Army stuff. There were 3 Bronze stars, but I have absolutely no idea why, since he and my Uncle never spoke of what happened in the war.

I served with a full-blooded Crow in the Army. He had by far the most badass name I have ever heard. His name was Knowshisguns...that's how you know someone comes from a culture of warriors when even thier last names are designed to strike fear in thier enemies!

I saw him once - from a distance - just a few years before he died. It was near the LBH battlefield. They were doing a production on US history using re-enactors that he had written and they introduced him to the crowd. A life well lived to be sure.

This is why we must preserve our customs and way of life and never lose ourselves and end up being lost again. No matter what tribe we are from we must look after one another and grow together
