To become a War Chief of the Crow Nation, a man must do four things prized of a stealthy Crow warrior: 1. Touch an enemy without killing them, 2. Seize an enemy’s weapon, 3. Lead a successful war party, and 4. Steal an enemy’s horse. Surprisingly, one of the last men to ever complete these tasks did so not in the Wild West, but in the middle of World War 2 Europe. He was a U.S. soldier named Joe Medicine Crow, and he was to eventually become known as the “Last War Chief”...

"Weapons are the tools of violence; all decent men detest them. Weapons are the tools of fear; a decent man will avoid them except in the direst necessity and, if compelled, will use them only with the utmost restraint. Peace is his highest value. If the peace has been shattered, how can he be content? His enemies are not demons, but human beings like himself. He doesn't wish them personal harm. Nor does he rejoice in victory. How could he rejoice in victory and delight in the slaughter of men? He enters a battle gravely, with sorrow and with great compassion, as if he were attending a funeral." Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

I really like the qualifiers of touching an enemy without killing them, and disarming the enemy. That's very tough and extremely dangerous to do no matter who you are. I also like it because it encourages mercy, and that jives very well with a biblical passage I like that teaches you if you have a choice between choosing death or choosing life, choosing life is the moral choice. There are times where killing is acceptable, such as to eat and to prevent yourself or others from being eaten/killed. Being able to spare your enemy's life isn't weakness; to the contrary, one must be very strong to let their enemy live and continue living themselves. It's like saying, "I'm so powerful that I will continue to live whether or not my enemy lives, so I will let my enemy live as proof of my strength."

I saw him once - from a distance - just a few years before he died. It was near the LBH battlefield. They were doing a production on US history using re-enactors that he had written and they introduced him to the crowd. A life well lived to be sure.

What a great video! Such a sin we as a nation don’t pridefully embrace the wisdom, courage, and honor of our true national forefathers, the native North Americans.

This is why we must preserve our customs and way of life and never lose ourselves and end up being lost again. No matter what tribe we are from we must look after one another and grow together
